Ex-Ukip MEP guilty of huge fraud

A former Ukip MEP has been found guilty of fraudulently claiming almost £500,000 in European Parliament expenses.

A jury at London’s Southwark Crown Court took an hour and 42 minutes to find Ashley Mote, 79, guilty of 12 fraud-related offences and of using the gains to fund his court battles in the UK.

Mote, of Binsted, Hampshire, was found guilty of four counts of obtaining a money transfer by deception, three of false accounting, two of fraud, and one each of acquiring criminal property, concealing criminal property and theft.

Ashley Mote was guilty of committing a string of fraud-related offences and using the gains to fund his court battles in the UK

The offences took place between November 2004 and July 2010.

Releasing Mote on conditional bail, Mr Justice Stuart Smith said: “He must appreciate that there is a very strong likelihood that a custodial sentence will follow.”

The judge said he was not concerned about the “relatively short time” it took the jury to reach its decisions.

He said: “I have watched you over the four weeks (of the trial) and you have been giving this close attention.”

A date for sentencing has yet to be set.

The prosecution claimed that Mote submitted numerous false claims for parliamentary assistance allowance for payment for work that organisations had carried out on his behalf.

The prosecution also claimed that he dishonestly obtained approximately 355,000 euros and £184,000 of allowances to which he was not entitled.

Between 2004, when he was elected MEP, and 2009, Mote claimed a total of £750,000 in parliamentary assistance allowance – taking into account his legitimate claims and any alleged fraudulent activity.

Mote was elected as a Ukip MEP for south east England in 2004, but shortly before he took up his seat he was thrown out of Nigel Farage’s party because he was being prosecuted by the Department for Work and Pensions for benefit fraud.

He sat as an independent MEP until 2009, when he decided not to stand for re-election.

The case would seem to have hinged on the fact that under some circumstances MEPs may utilise tax payers’ money to defend or prosecute cases related to offences commited whilst in office.

Ashley Mote was prosecuted and found guilty of benefit fraud commited prior to his election to office.

I believe Ashley mote acted on the presumption that either no case would have been called had he not been elected as a Ukip MEP, or that he was entitled to the legal defence because he was an MEP. In the belief that he would win he may have considered it only as a loan undrawn down as the Crown would be liable for costs.

There is I understand precedent for this as I gather Gerard Batten used Tax payers’ money to fund legal matters.

Having been removed from Ukip Ashley Mote was denied access to advice on the matter from the party and would seem to have dug himself an ever deeper hole with his costly appeals and lengthy Court cases. There is no doubt he is guilty of these new offences it would seem though there is a ‘rationalle’ for claiming his earlier prosecution was brought about by his political stance and position.

The claims against Nikki Sinclaire would seem to be entirely different and are seemingly without sound foundation as they would apppear to have been triggered by the self serving ambitions of John Ison and contrived evidence and claims. Were there any validity to the claims it is clear that Nikki Sinclaire was in no way the guilty party as all the claims against her were firstly technical misunderstandings and secondly during the period when, to avoid any such errors, every Ukip MEP surrendered control of their accounts, expenses and salary claims to Nigel Farage’s appointed accountant – thus Nigel Farage is directly responsible for any such errors as claimed!

There is absolutely no claim made against Nikki Sinclaire brought by the Police or CPS subsequent to her having left Ukip and it is an auditted fact that she paid from her own personal income and savings into her campaigning against EU membership and other constituency duties at least 4 or 5 times the amount she is claimed to have falsely drawn whilst Ukip controlled her accounts.

The Ashley Mote case has more in common with that of Tom Wise, who was sentenced to 2 years in prison, though he only served a few months! Tom Wise had embezzelled money from the EU, aided by the signatures of Lindsay Jenkins as you will recal from the facts provided on this blog at the time. Interestimngly at no time was Tom Wise either suspended from or thrown out of Ukip and was allowed to serve his full term as an MEP a Ukip member.

Tom Wise was vigerously defended and his criminal activity was strenuously denied by Ukip senior officials, dishonest individuals such as Douglas Denny, Mick McGough, Mike Nattrass, Mark Croucher, Anthony Butcher and many naiive members, also the duplicitous Roger Helmer who you may well recal was also featured in the video sting carried out by TNOTW!

The dishonest claiming of expenses and false accounting of Ukip senior officials is clearly endemic starting at the top with the then leader Jeffrey Tittford having been ordered to repay EU money he had falsely claimed and used, followed by Nigel Farage in similar circumstances not to mention setting up off shore accounts to benefit from tax breaks with an Isle of Man account to which he deposited 100s of £1,000, or the misappropriation of 10s of £1,000s of pounds by Derek Clark who though he was never prosecuted, unlike Tom Wise, he was ordered to repay to the EU.

Then of course the leader Malcolm Lord Pearson besides being exposed as an unashamed anti Islamic racist was shown on film by The Sunday Times as having colluded with Nigel Farage to lainder money from donors via his company Global Britain at the same time that he was colluding with Stuart Agnew in seeking to obfuscate donations! Stuart Agnew also made it clear that he and David Bannerman were fiddling their expenses to pay the salaries of inappropriate staff!

There is also the matter of Ukip’s abject failure to responsibly, honestly or transparently present accounts for the Ashford scam, described by Nigel Farage as the most profitable organisation Ukip had ever had to make money! There was also the matter of laundering credit card payments through Graham Booth’s motel in Torquay and let us not forget that when OLAF investigated Graham Booth they ordered repayment of other funds claimed and failed to exhonourate Mike Nattrass subsequent to their investigation of his activities. Though Derek Clark was found guilty by OLAF and we understand his file was passed to the British Police who it seems took no action, as with Stuart Agnew, Malcolm Pearson, David Bannerman and no doubt others!

One wonders why, with so much sound evidence, the police have taken no action against these individuals yet have seemingly trumped up a case against Nikki Sinclaire based upon the most febrile of claims, which are easily dismissed and over such a small amount of money, when 100s of £1,000s of claims against Ukip have been ignored!

Then of course there is Ukip’s blatant dishonesty and disregard for British Courts and the undeniable fact that they are indebted to me for some £13,500 and interest over some half a dozen years which they have failed to pay, and the fact that Nigel Farage’s grubby little sewer rat Mark Croucher flagrantly ignores his debts as ordered by the Courts.

Some may remember the dubious funding of Mark Croucher’s two pubs, which he claimed were funded by Ukip/Nigel Farage as ‘hush money’ – naturally with Mark Croucher running them both failed, though he tried to blame everything but his own incompetence and lack of ability!

I understand Ukip finances are currently under legal scrutiny, particularly as to the recent General Election and it is a well publicised fact that Ukip are currently on the verge of bankruptcy and as yet it is unclear whether they paid their due election debts on the 05-Jul-2015 as legally required!

Then of course worthy of note is that Nigel Farage has been questioned regarding the allegations made by Annabelle Fuller when she stole Andrew Bridgen’s Blackberry, House of Commons Pass & confidential correspondence the file related to her criminality has been passed to the CPS and it is a matter of speculation to what extent Nigel Farage is implicated by his phone calls with her when she was involved in the crime!

Also we are still awaiting an outcome of the investigation of Janice Atkinson’s fraud whilst working for Farage when she claimed money for an event organised for Nigel Farage’s EFDD.

etc. etc. etc.

Clearly there is much more for Ukip and its staff to answer to, but let us leave it there for the moment rather than deal with other areas of criminality within their ranks!
For a slightly different ‘take’ on Ashley Mote’s trial, crimes and sentence:

A former Ukip MEP who cheated almost £500,000 in European Parliament expenses has been jailed for five years.

Ashley Mote, 79, submitted bogus claims for his parliamentary allowance, which was supposed to be for work that organisations had carried out on his behalf.

Mote, of Binsted, Hampshire, was sentenced to a total of five years imprisonment at Southwark Crown Court today.

Mr Justice Stuart Smith said Mote had “lied, protested, lied and lied again” during his trial.

“Your greed and dishonesty were matched only by your hypocrisy because while this was going on you carried out a high profile campaign condemning corruption and the improper use of public money in the very institution from which you were leeching it.”

He continued: “You knew perfectly well what the rules were for the claiming of expenses and you also knew perfectly well that what you were doing had nothing to do with funding whistleblowers and everything to do with funding your bridging loan, your mortgage, your legal expenses that were unrelated to your role as an MEP.

“You abused your position of trust as an elected representative and you abused the trust that the European Parliament placed in you, consistently making false statements in the knowledge that the institutions trusted their MEPs to be reliable and honest.

Ashley Mote at an earlier court appearance in April (Julian Simmonds/The Telegraph)

“Along the way you deceived people who shared your declared political ideals and even considered you to be something of a political hero.

“You are, as was said by the trial judge when you were convicted of substantial benefits fraud in 2007, a thoroughly dishonest man.

“The consistency of your dishonesty is breathtaking.”

Mr Justice Smith said: “As you came to towards the end of your time as an MEP you decided to milk what you saw as your cash cow to the limit.”

Mote was convicted at trial of four counts of obtaining a money transfer by deception, three of false accounting, two of fraud, and one each of acquiring criminal property, concealing criminal property and theft. The offences took place between November 2004 and July 2010.

Mote was allowed to sit in the back of court because of hearing problems.

Hi,
further details to come later but it is a lovely day out & UKIP become ever less significant in domestic politics as they have zero MPs and little hope of ever getting any and very few councillors out of the many 1,000s in the UK; of the 149 elected a significant number have jumped ship many on the grounds of overt stupidity others due to their racist views and yet others even some in office still are marginalised by their criminality – not to mention those who have fallen out or seen through UKIP’s leader & his claque!
Don’t forget  Nigel Farage, Graham Booth, Stuart Agnew, David Bannerman, Jeffrey Titford, Mike Nattrass, Derek Clark, John Wittacker, Mark Croucher, Tom Wise & various Councillors have fallen foul of British Courts regarding money or have been forced to repay substantial sums of tax payers’ money perloined from the EU or have been investigated by OLAF and either found guilty or at least not exhonourated!

Ukip faces inquiry

into abuse of party funds

Nigel Farage is hoping for a breakthrough at the general election next year

FARAGE, Nigel 84

Nigel Farage is hoping for a breakthrough at the general election next year PA

Rachel SylvesterAlice Thomson and Francis Elliott

Last updated at 12:01AM, March 8 2014

Nigel Farage faces an official inquiry into allegations that Ukip improperly diverted taxpayers’ money to fund its political operations.

Ukip staff were instructed to send invoices to a European body for work done in Britain. A whistleblower has told The Times that this meant that money was diverted back to the party’s headquarters, apparently against parliamentary rules.

The allegations are set to trigger an official “misuse-of-funds” investigation into Ukip before the critical European Parliament elections.

Mr Farage hopes that victory on May 22 will provide enough momentum for Ukip to achieve a breakthrough at the general election next year. That prospect, however, has brought greater scrutiny both of Ukip’s funding and its claim to be a political insurgency.

Ukip’s MEPs have received more than £2.4 million in allowances and expenses since their election in 2009, not including travel, despite having one of the worst attendance records of any party. However, the party’s alleged misuse of additional funds, which it receives as a member of a political grouping, the EFD, threatens to cause a huge embarrassment.

European Parliament rules state that public money paid to fund Europe-wide political groups such as the EFD may not “be used to finance political parties at national and European level”. However, a former member of the Ukip press office in London claimed that staff were instructed to invoice the EFD group in Brussels. The whistleblower said: “I was paid by the EFD group in the European Parliament, even though I worked exclusively for Ukip in the UK. The money was paid into my bank account directly from the EFD Group.”

The whistleblower knew of three other people paid in this way, even though they too worked only for the national party. “It was my understanding that the press office had been funded this way for some time and continued to be so after I left.”

The Times has seen evidence that two other members of Ukip staff were paid directly from EU funds in 2012 and 2013. The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Edward McMillan-Scott, said that he was referring the evidence of alleged misuse to its governing body, the Bureau, which meets on Monday.

“This appears to be a misuse of funds, which would be improper,” Mr Macmillan-Scott, a Liberal Democrat MEP for Yorkshire and Humberside, said.

“I will raise this with the Bureau and ask the relevant authorities to look into it. On the face of it, it looks as though this contravenes the rules of the European Parliament. This is taxpayer’s money and should not be diverted to political parties, in the UK or anywhere else,” he said.

“This is a party which promised to be transparent and not to use slush funds. This looks like double standards and needs to be investigated before the European elections so that the public can make up their mind.”

Ukip said in a statement last night: “Ukip MEPs are careful to observe European parliamentary rules when spending resources on advancing the goal of British withdrawal. Ukip has always worked hard to ensure that demarcations between EFD employees and party employees are properly observed. Ukip MEPs work for withdrawal from the EU just as they promised the voters that they would when elected in 2009.

“Ukip has from the outset been the biggest constituent part of the EFD group and Nigel Farage is the group leader. It is wholly legitimate and within the rules for some EFD staff to work out of London and indeed staff from other groups that include other British political parties do the same.

“After the rapid growth of the party, Ukip has now put in place a bi-annual review as an extra check to ensure that staff responsibilities remain appropriately demarcated and that the actual work patterns of staff remain consistent.”

If it is found to have broken the rules, Ukip may have to pay back the cash. Two years ago two MEPs had to return £37,000 that they had improperly diverted to national party workers.

UKIP, or at least the media, are becoming all too well aware that Nigel Farage, although he has ensure he is the only recognisable performer in his party, is likely to prove to be kiss of death to UKIP!
.

~~~~~~~~~~#########~~~~~~~~~~
.
Hi,
I note that Dr. Richard North has made verys similar comments on his excellent and well informed and researched blog as I.
Richard’s comment on his experience with Nigel Farage:
The bigger issue, though, is Farage’s assertion that he is going to take greater control. Long before he became party leader, he and I used to sit in the shared office in Strasbourg discussing the problems of leading such a fractious party as UKIP. And despite having first Michael Holmes and then Jeffrey Titford as leader – MEPs both – we agreed that it was not a good idea to have an MEP in charge.
almost exactly mirrors numerous conversations I have had with Nigel!
In fact I am clearly on record as saying that I would vigerously assist and support UKIP and its aim to Leave-The-EU under even half competent leadership but would implacably oppose it were Nigel Farage stupid enough to become the leader5 as I was well aware of his abilities as a performer but like Richard all to0o well aware of his total inability to lead much more than a rubber duck around a bath on a piece of string – A comment I have made often to0 Nigel himself.
It was clear, even in the early days of UKIP, that Nigel’s management and leadership skills were divisive and self serving rather than competent and his judgement of people was at the very least inept! A little flattery and a semblance of fawning adulation went a long way as long as there was little or no apparent ability or drive, ambition or intellectual gravitas!
I have been proven right time and again as Nigel purged the party of individuals of ability and ethics!
I was right then as is Richard’s title and the facts he puts forward now!
UKIP: Farage’s kiss of death
Richard North, 22/08/2013
000a Adams-021 farage.jpg
To no-one’s very great surprise, the UKIP saga has continued running, with the BBC and others picking up on the criticisms aired by Will Gilpin, the recently departed chief executive. The thoroughly unprofessional Mr Farage is well in evidence, with the BBC headline telling us that he has too much power in UKIP.
By any measure, therefore, Farage’s response to Gilpin is bizarre. Instead of retrenching, and even showing some signs of remorse, he comes storming back, telling the Telegraph that he will take a step back from public politics so that he can “get a grip” on UKIP by taking “direct control” of the party.
The idea that Farage will also cut back on his media appearances – as he claims – is hard to believe. The man thrives on publicity and cutting him off from the media would be like depriving an addict of his heroin.
The bigger issue, though, is Farage’s assertion that he is going to take greater control. Long before he became party leader, he and I used to sit in the shared office in Strasbourg discussing the problems of leading such a fractious party as UKIP. And despite having first Michael Holmes and then Jeffrey Titford as leader – MEPs both – we agreed that it was not a good idea to have an MEP in charge.
The debilitating effect of the travel, absence from the UK, the complexity of the task in following the EU agenda and exploiting the opportunities afforded by membership of the European Parliament, all meant that it was virtually impossible for any single person to function effectively as both an MEP and a leader. It simply a very bad idea.
Thus, we risked ending up with the worst of all possible worlds, a representative under-performing as an MEP and also making a hash of the leadership – which is precisely what Farage has done.
The problem would not be so acute if the party had an effective management committee (in the NEC), a strong and effective chairman and/or a skilled and effective chief executive with the authority and backing to run the party. But, while lacking almost entirely any of his own management skills, Farage has been able to exercise the dark arts in which he is a consummate practitioner and neutralised these alternative power bases.
For Farage thus to say that he is going to take “direct control” is a harbinger of doom, not least in his unwillingness or inability to control his drinking pal, the oaf Bloom, who seems intent on committing political suicide. The Conservatives must think that Christmas has come early.
Nevertheless, it was UKIP the party that appointed Mr Gilpin. And now that he is complaining of being undermined by Farage, it is thoroughly perverse to have the source of the problem assume control of the mess he has created.
What is more, while there is a managerial vacuum in UKIP, there is an even greater policy vacuum. The Article 50 issue and the exit plan are just two of the areas which need considerable development and firm leadership. For Farage to desert the political leadership of the party, in order to attend to managerial aspects – for which he has little aptitude and almost no competence – is no answer at all.
The thing that makes this all so bizarre though is that Farage, having exercised far too much control in the past, now sees as the remedy exercising even more. This suggests he has learned nothing from recent experience and is entirely impervious to the bad publicity he is currently getting. The Adams cartoon from the Telegraph (pictured) and the number of adverse comments he is getting on the paper’s website all point to his having scored an own goal.
But for those of us seeking improvement in the party, the concern (and energy) might be misplaced. UKIP is beginning to look as if it is beyond redemption. Without a sound ideological base and a competent leader, it may be on its way to the same political graveyard as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) which in the 1983 general election took 28 percent of the vote and has since disappeared.
The SDP’s fate was to be absorbed into the Lib-Dems which, as of last week, were taking eight percent of the polls. Not ever has UKIP approached 28 percent in the polls, so it has less far to fall.
While it may do well in the euro-elections, Will Gilpin himself suggests that UKIP may underperform at the 2015 general election – and that may be the start of its decline to obscurity. Nevertheless, for all his skills, Gilpin has no track record as a political campaigner, but it is fair to say that success depends as much on good administration and management as political skills.
With Farage now assuming greater control over the helm, future campaigns are ostensibly in the hands of a man whose administrative skills do not even stretch to ensuring the publication of expenses claims, thus breaking manifesto promises. His management skills – and certainly his personnel management – can be measured as a minus quotient. There can, therefore, be no confidence that we will see any improvement in UKIP’s performance under Farage’s more direct control.
Then, when it comes to the vital web presence, whatever Will Gilpin’s failings might have been, in Farage we are looking at a man who, until recently, had trouble finding the “on” switch on a computer. He had to get his staff to print his e-mails so that he could read them.
More importantly, we are now looking at a politician who is failing to respond correctly to political signals. Far from resuscitating UKIP’s management, he is so badly misreading the signals that he is courting catastrophic failure.
But the greater disaster is a party that cannot control or restrain its own leader. This is a party which has received the kiss of death. It is sadly ironic that it should come from one of its founders, who is now set to preside over the decline of his own creation.
Hi,
it is interesting to note the following exchange on a UKIP controlled public forum which openly endorses the lies and dishonesty of UKIP supporters in their efforts to hide the truth about the state of the party under its present corrupt and self serving unprofessional and incompetent leadership.
    Dustbin Lid,I regret I am unable to translate the mutterings of the senile chap in the coffee shop.I regret that I fear dementia has befallen Geoffrey as he posts a series of unrelated words.He joins Greg Liar-Wotsit in the waiting room as all the anti-UKIP Nutters are recalled to base.
    (G.L-W.: that was an example of the low grade style of a UKIP NEC member who has consistently befouled the cause with his childish posturings & general tasteless sneerings and dishonesty)
    Geoffrey Collier is online now(G.L-W. has been a dedicated member and supporter of UKIP for approaching 20 years. A retired CFollege Lecturer of some standing. Geoffrey Collier has not only officially represented UKIP on matters pertaining to the countryside & National Parks but also was a founder and chairman of UKIP’s largest branch and chaired the branch when it was the largest revenue donator of any branch in Britain.
    Geoffrey Collier has been a relentless toiler for the partyy and has worked relentlessly to try to instigate integrity, ethics, probity and honesty in an effort to try to clean up the party to make it fit for purpose.
    Geoffrey Collier’s informed response:
    Dustbin Lid: Now can you see better the problems which we have in UKIP?
    Michael used to counter-sign UKIP cheques from the national account, which were agreed with UKIP’s national Treasurer Andrew Smith.
    Elected members to the NEC, who have asked to peruse those accounts, have been systematically dismissed from the NEC for making such requests.
    (G.L-W: Andrew Smith, as treasurer, was asked around 25 basic questions about the UKIP accounts, for which he was responsible, by members of the NEC – He was unable to answer the questions and to avoid facing up to his responsibilities he quit the job without notice, leaving the accounts in complete disarray – this was the man wyho eMailed individuals to lay out his plan as to how to deceive the Electoral Commision!
    At the moment there are no less than two television companies investigating UKIP’s financial affairs;
    (G.L-W: There are more!)
    no doubt there are national newspapers doing likewise.
    (G.L-W: There are numerous!)
    It is easy for people like Michael to try and dismiss these things, but the evidence is to the contrary.
    OLAF have required UKIP MEPs’ to return impermissible financial allocations.
    (G.L-W: Tom Wise, a UKIP MEP was sentenced to 2 years in prison for his fraud and Derek Clar UKIP MEP, after boasting of his defrauding the tax payers was subsequently found guilty and ordered to repay a similar sum to that which Tom Wise embezzled!
    Nigel Farage, Jeffrey Titford and Graham Booth as UKIP MEPs were also found guilty of misappropriation of tax payer’s money and ordered to repay money they had taken)
    Others, such as Stuart Agnew, admitted that he has been doing likewise.
    (G.L-W: Mike Nattrass was investigated by OLAF also and having read the conclusion/report it was clear OLAF opted to take no further action!
    Stuart Agnew & David Bannerman are both still under investigation by OLAF for fraudulent misuse of tax payers money as admitted to on camera to The Sunday Times.)
    At a time when we should be making real progress, newspapers are giving UKIP banner headlines, knowing that for UKIP, soon will dawn that day of nemesis. We are warned of ‘Greeks bearing gifts’, I say be more beware of national newspapers deliberately building you up, for the delight of knocking you down.
    (G.L-W: Many will be aware, or may even have seen, the evicerating comments of Andrew Neal with regard to Farage & UKIP, since the somewhat febrile achievements at Eastleigh!)
    In UKIP the cause has been impeccable; while the membership has given of their time, efforts and generosity year-on-year, unstintingly. But it would be foolish to say that they have been given the leadership which they deserve.
    NEC member Mr Mcgough makes inane comments, for that is the best that he can do.
    You know that I am right, don’t you Michael?
    If you analyse the composition of the leadership, it comprises two distinct parts.
    There are one or two whom we can trust, but there is a cluster of genuine ignoramuses; for a good salary they would say anything.
    The other group is comprised of those with damaged reputations ( e.g. Neil Hamilton) and Lord Monckton, who had to be advised that he is not an ‘honorary member of the House of Lords, and to inform American Senators that he is, has no basis in fact.
    These people make the management of the Party more manageable than the talented people, who are seen as an immediate threat to the existing status-quo. Surely that cannot be seriously denied?
    We have survived the years, and for some decades, of espousing a message that was not popular. Now that our time has come, we are to be harmed by internal corruption which has existed unabated for years.
    We had an opportunity to deal with our own problems, and unsavoury people, but we chose to do nothing.
    Now that our cause has genuine political capital, there will be others who will embrace it as their own, and UKIP’s past misdeeds shall return to haunt them.
    That is sad; but it must be what is awaiting UKIP.
    Oh dear, it seems there has been some rather disappointing behavior from some.
It is interesting to note the endless lies of Mick McGough as he and others in UKIP’s corrupt leadership by self serving ne’er do wells desperately try to hide their corruption by seeking to denigrate and defame people like Geoffrey Collier, Niall Warry, The Junius Team, Nikki Sinclaire, myself and others.
The endless claims of my misleading people and claims that I have lied on my blog are risible – in well over 2,000 blog postings and probably the same number of Forum entries, YouTube contributions, Twitters, eMails and the like NOT ONCE have UKIP their lawyers, sock puppets, leadership, NEC members nor even their claque of cowardly anonymous supporters EVER been able to identify a single consequential fact which I have got wrong, with regard to UKIP & its people, let alone any sign of a deliberate lie – would that the same could be said of UKIP & its leadership.
Were UKIP able to show, in like manner, their ethical behaviour, integrity and probity perhaps they would not have been such an abject failure in representing the EUroSceptic cause and just might have attracted not just support of consequence, some gravitas, a flicker of leadership, an iota of professionalism and even perhaps someone elected to an office of consequence in a domestic election!
To which I note the response from Atkinson as follows!
Sent: Wednesday, October 31, 2012 10:27 AM
Subject: Norris would not have approved of Farage giving McWhirter Lecture
I am afraid Norris would not have approved of Farage giving a lecture associated with his name.
Norris, myself and Michael Holmes fought against the kind of shenanigans orchestrated by Farage in UKIP and left the party as a result of
his behaviour. You are dishonouring Norris’s name by inviting Farage to speak.
I will NOT be coming.
Rodney Atkinson
Now let us look a little closer:
It would seem that the directors of The Freedom Association have invited Nigel Farage to speak to their members as this years McWhirter Lecture, which of course does not endorse the topic nor of course could it be inferred that it grants the endorsement of Norris McWhirter to any event subsequent to his last fateful tennis game when he died, several years ago.
TFA are largely emasculated as an organisation ever since it was corrupted by its Chairmanship by the discredited and untrustworthy Christopher Gill. The position was little helped by regular contributions from Gerard Batten whose over efforts at what would seem to be incitement to racial hatred with his anti Islamic articles which are well documented CLICK HERE
Considering the response to the invitation in a circular to be a paying guest we note:
Subject: Norris would not have approved of Farage giving McWhirter Lecture
Preumably this would have read ‘In My Opinion’ were not the title bar limited
I am afraid Norris would not have approved of Farage giving a lecture associated with his name.
As a personal opinion it is as valid as the next but to be sure Norris McWhrter in a long and very successful career shared his name with some very strange causes and let us face it to share ones name in publications where the author writes his own forwards telling all how very clever and well informed they are is indeed and indication of Norris McWhirter’s broad minded approach to the issues of self determination, liberty and protest.
I understand his name was also abused by it being added as a patron of one particularly bizarre organisation set up AFTER his death!
Norris, myself and Michael Holmes fought against the kind of shenanigans orchestrated by Farage in UKIP and left the party as a result of this behaviour.
Having shared platforms at speaking engagement with Norris McWhirter I am morally certain he was never a UKIP member and nor did he ever claim to be – perhaps like The Mormons Mr. Atkinson seeks to convert the dead to his cult!
My memory may be at fault but as I recall surely Rodney Atkinson threw his toys out of his pram when defeated in an election, by a very small margin, by Jeffrey Titford who thus became the party leader.
Many in UKIP believed that the support of leading journalists such as Bill Jamieson and Christopher Booker was a far greater asset to UKIP than Rodney Atkinson and what seemed to be his somewhat obsessive anti German cult following who believed all EUrope’s ills were a deep Nazi plot – a view that many realised would destroy the EUroSceptic movement.
I myself, though never a UKIP member and never in anyones political control or pay was very much of the opinion that Rodney Atkinson was hugely outclassed in a leadership bid by Jeffrey Titford, ineffectual as he would clearly be he was what many of us considered a safe pare of hands after the period of great divisions brought about by Michael Holmes.
I, like Christopher Booker and Bill Jamieson was convinced Atkinson was a totally unsuitable candidate for leader, not least of all because of the dishonesty of some he gathered around him, and in the interest of EUroScepticis at the time I circulated two separate letters to every UKIP member stating my personal opinion and reasoning over my own signature and providing my eMail & street address and phone number – not for me the actions of low lifes and cowards to dishonestly spread gossip and lies whilst sheltering in anonymity.
Many will remember Michael Holmes, who Atkinson attributes actions to, who gained control as leader of UKIP in a period when UKIP was VERY short of money and as I recall he made a large donation to the party – few realised that he fairly rapidly and somewhat clandestinely redeemed his very public donation, likely with interest!
Much of Michael Holmes’ apparent credibility was it seems obtained by his particularly imaginitive entry in Who’s Who which bore very little relationship to fact I gather!
In terms of fanciful comment this would seem to be a trait of Mr. Atkinson’s as he claims Norris McWhirter left the party – a party of which he was not a member!
Atkinson himself left the party (was he a member?) having been defeated by Jeffrey Titford and having been legitimately and politically out maneuvered.
Michael Holmes did NOT leave UKIP until, as a UKIP MEP, it became expedient on health grounds after a fairly substantial stroke.
 You are dishonouring Norris’s name by inviting Farage to speak.
It is for the reasons that have manifest yet again that I feel my decision to act to oppose Atkinson’s efforts to gain control of UKIP were are totally vindicated – sadly UKIP has never managed to attract anyone of suitable caliber as a leader either then, before or since!
I would hasten to add, as I am sure Nigel Farage, were he to have an honest moment, would confirm both my comments above and also the fact that I supported his own position and to this day my opinion is unchanged – that being that I have and do support Nigel Farage as UKIP’s performing monkey and media personality but he will confirm that I have consistently told him he could count on my implacable opposition to his status were he to aspire to or obtain leadership of the party.
Nigel Farage very clearly lacks the intellect, the OQ, the leadership skills, the integrity, the morality, the probity or the ethics to be leader of almost anything – least of all a British Political Campaign for it is clear UKIP has absolutely no role and less ability as a political party – a fact the British public has shown very clearly that it agrees with!
To this day after almost 20 years UKIP has failed on almost every count and are almost totally rejected in the field of domestic politics – currently holding less than 30 serious political positions by election, out of some 19,500 available!
Rodney Atkinson goes on to state:
I will NOT be coming.
A petulant comment which I doubt will perturb anyone of any sense. It is not as if anyone had asked him to do other than sit in an audience and listen to The Freedom Association’s directors chosen guest speaker.
Is this merely pique at not being asked and missing out on being able to charge for speaking and having full editorial control, which of course would have once again led to the event running at a huge loss for the organisers, as with Sovereign Britain’s event at which he spoke!
Little wonder that this correspondence was deliberately supplied to me presumably in some contempt!
Just for the record I can think of better things to do on the evening of 03- Dec-2012 and will not be wasting £25 at a UKIP influenced organisation like TFA!
Regards,
Greg_L-W..
UKIP: Gary Cartwright on Nigel Farage
From Gary Cartwright’s blog:
I was highly amused to see a certain party leader looking like a scared rabbit caught in car headlights, desperately explaining to a Tory chum his thoughts on a referendum in Brussels a couple of weeks ago.
I wonder what has suddenly made him so concerned about a referendum now?
Better Late Than Never!
Demanding of David Cameron a promise of a referendum “written in blood” is all jolly stirring stuff, but when the person in question didn’t actually sign the petition calling for a referendum until after it had actually been presented to 10 Downing Street, those words sound somewhat hollow. But words are cheap, and easy to come by.
Unlike collecting 220,000 signatures, forcing a debate in the Commons, and provoking a back-bench revolt, all of which required great effort and some financial cost, words actually count for little unless they are backed up with deeds. UKIP’s words rarely seem to be backed up with deeds. The party has descended into a world of yaa-boo politics: name calling and jeering from the sidelines. The party is simply not interesting anymore.
It amused me, although it did not surprise me, when after the first 100,000 signatures were handed in and we learned there was to be a debate on a referendum on our continued membership of the EU, no less than 3 other groups tried to take the credit for it. I remember well UKIP’s feeble and half-hearted attempt at raising a petition. It appers to have acheived nothing – apart that is from an expenditure of a substantial 6 figure sum. I have often wondered where that money went…
As we approach our inaugural conference on Friday 5th, at Westminster Central Hall, I expect the usual libels and slanders that I have come to expect from the UKIP press office to start oozing to the surface. If you can’t do anything, attack those who can, seems to be the strategy. Probably the only strategy UKIP has, I am afraid.
When I think of the UKIP press office, for some reason the words of Lewis Carroll: “T’was brillig, and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe…” come into my mind.
To read the original: LINK
To which I have responded:
Hi,
do you not feel Gary is being a little harsh on Farage’s party, when after all it has only cost the tax payers around £50,000,000 over the years for UKIP to achieve the sum total of:
– come to think of it, beyond defame and malign a lot of people, wind up with MEPs in prison, lie to the Courts and to the police what have they achieved of value?
Then of course there was the way in which they seem to have slept their way into the choice of all too many of their staff, lied on a consistent basis, both to Regional Committees, electorate and members about their various thefts and sordid corruption.
Might it be: What seems to have been over egging the rigging of a vote, to do away with member’s democratic input and turn the party into a one man band dictatorship, (as made abundantly clear in Marta Andreassen’s full interview given to Michael Crick – which one must assume will be presented in suitable form for an election!) with appointed pond life and low lifes doing as Farage orders as he holds the purse strings, all staff appointments, positions in selection lists, and of course it seems he hold the rigging rights for votes and funding for bribes!
Might their achievement be to have pulled together a leadership clique that hold onto office only by bribery, bullying, dishonesty and intimidation?
Could it be the facility of stealing money to use as bribes just as Tom Wise did though he was rightly sent to prison for his criminality!
One wonders why Derek Clark was not also as he was ordered to repay almost exactly the same sum which he had misappropriated and Nigel Farage, Graham Booth, and Jeffrey Titford were also ordered to repay money to the public purse.
I note you also do not know what happened to the money taken from the public purse by Farage, Lott, Croucher etc. for a petition which was never presented and were you not a staffer at the time! Seems UKIP leadership are consistent on one count – corruption.
Farage has time and again gone on public media and outright lied just as Malcolm Pearson lied when leader to deselect Nikki Sinclaire becauser as an MEP she was showing up the other UKIP MEPs with the transparency of her accounts and her dedication, ethicality and workload (a sure way to make enemies in UKIP!) currently Stuart Agnew and David Bannerman are, I am reliably informed – still under investigation by OLAF for their abuse of trust in elected office and misuse of public money (as with Tom Wise who went to prison for his crimes).
Interestingly UKIP make much of trying to befoul Sinclaire’s name yet OLAF have absolutely no interest in investigating her, despite what seem to be ‘set up fantasies’ spun to West Midlands Police by John Ison, seemingly for his preferment in political rivalry as promised by UKIP – and since only one man in UKIP makes the decisions clearly he must have authorised the attempted set up!
Sadly Gary – your posting is accurate and it is clear there isn’t a single solitary achievement of note for the £50,000,000 or so we, as tax payers, have permitted UKIP to steal, purloin, squander and abuse.
Yet it is possible to achieve as an MEP, as Nikki Sinclaire has most ably shown, even using her own money for the cause where the rest of UKIP leadership seem to think paying money for their own election is some sort of magnanimous gesture – beyond that what money has ANY UKIP MEP ever donated to the good of the party?
So sad when they had such potential and hardly surprising they try to jump on every passing band wagon!
In reality UKIP leadership are beneath contempt – just a gaggle of racist, abusive self seekers of little or no merit!
Regards,
Greg_L-W.
.
Isn’t it astonishing that some of the most consistently corrupt politicians slide through every situation, be it drunkeness, consorting with prostitutes, self enrichment, sexual abuse, abuse of power need I go on? We all have watched in horrified disgust as ‘teflon coated politicians’ oleaginously slide through every challenge.
Tony Blair clocked up almosty every aspect of such horror and added war crimes and crimes against humanity unchallenged, as Clinton in his sexual inadequacy needed reassurance at every opportunity even so far as rape – it is not just Jimmy Saville and the entertainment business that expresses its inadequacies and inferiority by exploiting sex with the vulnerable.
Then again let us face it – since political decision making of any meaning is an undemocratic process of imposition by unelected beauraucrats on a top down basis with no regard to the wishes of the people most politicians are relegated to being little more than entertainers – perhaps this inadequacy explains the way in which so called leaders are able to act in a criminal manner or at best amorally!
Regards,
Greg_L-W..
TO LEAVE THE EU
What is the Exit and Survival Plan for these United Kingdoms to maximise on the many benefits when we Leave-The-EU. It is the DUTY of our Politicians and Snivil Cervants to ensure the continuity, liberty and right to self determination of our peoples – they have a DUTY to protect against crime and secure both our food and our borders.
They also have a duty to put in place contingency plans for the collapse of The EUro & The EU or the wishes of the peoples of Britain to Leave-The-EU.
NONE of these DUTIES has a single British politician upheld for over 40 years. They have drawn their incomes fraudulently and dishonesty.
Politicians are failing to tell the truth, but so are almost all wanabe Politicians, the Main Stream Media and Snivil Cervants.
The fact is that even if EVERY British MEP wanted change in The EU it would achieve NOTHING, at very best if they ALL agreed they would then  still have less than a 10% say in the governance of Britain by The EU.
Every single British Politician, of EVERY Party, elected since before we joined the EUropean Common Market, has promised to change The EU’s CAP – In 40 Years they have achieved absolutely NOTHING towards that unanimous promise!
To try to put a value on OUR Freedom is as futile as floccipaucinihilipilification and as odious as the metissage of our societies, as we rummage in the ashes of our ancestors dreams, sacrifices and achievements, the flotsam of our hopes and the jetsam of our lives, consider the Country and Anglosphere which we thus leave our children and the future, with shame!
Regards,
Greg L-W.
PLEASE POST THIS TAG AS FOLLOWS: ON YOUR eMAILS & BLOGS, FORUM POSTINGS & MAILINGS – GET THE MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE IT IS OUR BEST HOPE AS WHOEVER IS APPOINTED WILL MAKE NO DIFFERENCE AS PROVED!
I SUGGEST – since there is clearly no political party of repute, advocating or campaigning to Leave-The-EU for these United Kingdoms and restoration of our independent sovereign, democracy, with Justice & the right to self determination in a free country & minded that membership of The EU is sucking out the life blood and identity of our Country in a counter patriotic manner and at a cost in hard cash of some £53 Million a day we must consider:
Denying the self seeking & meaningless wanabe MEPs and the no longer relevant MPs the Mythical Mandate for which they clamour.
Diktat is imposed from The EU but Law should be made at Westminster, for our Country & our Peoples, by the peoples of our Country.
It is time that the entire mechanism of governance in these United Kingdoms, which has so clearly failed our Country and our peoples, was radically overhauled and updated to democratic status – failure to change will mean when we Leave-The-EU and/or it finally collapses, as it surely will, we will be no better off as the self same self styled, self enriching clique will be all too willing to betray us as they have done relative to The EU and its fore runners.
To achieve change support rational planning as with The Harrogate Agenda and similar thinking of gravitas.
Demand a Royal Commission on the cost benefits of leaving The EU and of remaining its vassals with a clear ‘Exit & Survival Strategy‘ for implementation OR responsible contingency planning dependent on THEN holding a Referendum on IN or OUT to Let-The-People-Decide!
UKIP Copyright Infringement by Nigel Farage etc.
This article  I believe to be true though much of the opinion posted by Martin Cole I KNOW to be wildly speculative, at best, and often completely wrong!
Hi,
since speculation or should I say guesses and rumours are being posted as if factual on Anthony Butcher’s UKIP controlled blog, regarding the incident where Nigel Farage was found guilty of copyright infringement which seemed at the time to be largely driven by the odious and corrupt sewer rat Nigel employed, to try to build ‘Black Files’ on his staff, colleagues and opponents, Mark Croucher.
I note that Barbara Booker has drawn attention to the ‘facts’ as present6ed by Martin Cole, which were as follows:
Thursday, May 01, 2003Video Tape Copyright Infringement by Nigel Farage
On 4 September 2000 local trading standards officers raided UKIP’s South East branch offices in Redhill, seizing four illegal video copies of a BBC TV documentary “The Enemy Within” about Nigel Farage, UKIP MEP for the South East Region, which were in breach of copyright. Britain in Europe AccountMosaic Productions reprint of an article by Peter Shore in the Daily Telegraph
1st June 2000, sets the background as to why Nigel Farage might have felt dismayed at the non-appearance of the BBC episode of ‘Desperately Seeking Eutopia’ with his contribution. Peter Shore Article
Mosaic Films followed this report a few days later with another, this time concluded as follows:-
Article by Christopher Booker
The Sunday Telegraph, June 4 2000
An early indication that Mosaic Films took their copyright property rights very seriously!
Christopher Booker Article
On the 16th August 2000 the following item appeared in the London Evening Standard:-
“Some bad news for Nigel Farage, Euro MP for the UK Independence Party, who is the subject of a forthcoming BBC documentary due for broadcasting next month on the sparsely viewed BBC Knowledge channel.
The Beeb is furious to discover a video of the programme given to Farage by the makers is being copied and sold through the Party’s “Sovereignty” newsletter, with UKIP doing a roaring trade at five pounds a piece. The programme which includes footage of Farage’s assistant Dr Richard North describing our Spanish neighbours as: “Rag-arsed dagos,” is described by UKIP as: “A perfect tool for converting the sceptical, and perfect for showing at branch meetings.”
Not for long. The Beeb is already flexing its legal muscles. “This is a breach of copyright which won’t be tolerated,” a spokesman tells me.”
Jeffrey Titford had written a long letter of many complaints to the BBC on the 7th August 2000, ie a few days before this item appeared in the Standard, among which was the question as to why invitations to Farage to appear on Question Time had been withdrawn. The breach of copyright could, perhaps have been a contributory factor!
Jeffrey Titford’s Complaint to the BBC
What was the background to Farage’s actions, did he innocently flirt with a breach of copyright, or did he recklessly risk all to have his programme reach a wider organisation? Here the internet search engines reveal little, so we have been forced to make inquiries elsewhere.
Curiously at a UKIP NEC meeting on the 24th May 2000, a motion was put forward by Nigel Farage that any NEC member who fell foul of the law should have their legal expenses paid by the party. One present recalls that failing to gather majority support the proposer then lost his temper and stormed from the meeting.
Shortly after this the then Party Secretary learned that Nigel Farage planned to copy and sell a video tape and following enquiries learned the intent was to sell the box including the free tape inside, presumably a poor attempt to circumvent the law.
On 31st July 2000, Adam Alexander of Mosaic Films had faxed Nigel Farage confirming his company had worldwide rights to Eutopia – The Enemy Within.
On 9th August 2000 this same gentleman, Joint Managing Director of Mosaic, faxed Farage again advising:-
Quote
It has been brought to my attention that the UKIP, through a reference in Sovereignty magazine, is offering for sale copies of the film we made about you for the BBC series ‘Eutopia -The Enemy Within‘.
At no time has Mosaic given you the right to sell this programme. With reference to my fax to you of 31st July 2000, Mosaic holds the distribution rights and any exploitation of the material through video sales can only be through and with the express agreement of Mosaic Films.
Any attempts by you to make copies of and or sell the programme will be a breach of copyright, and to this end I must insist you refrain from making any sales until such time as a sales agreement has been made between us. Please advise me of any sales you may have already made.
I can confirm that under the terms of the agreement Mosaic has with the BBC the video cannot be sold until after the first transmission by the BBC, which is scheduled for sometime soon after 15th September 2000.
Unquote
This fax was copied to two people within the BBC and another Mosaic employee.
It could hardly have been clearer.
A letter of apology was sent to Mosaic Films signed on behalf of Nigel Farage by Stan Oram and believed to have been sent on 15th August 2000.
On 24th August, following an advert for the video appearing in the Independence (UKIP‘s Members Newsletter), the party secretary wrote to all NEC members advising the activity was illegal and that he would not work to defend the action which was bringing the Party into disrepute and that additionally he would oppose the use of party funds being used to meet costs that might be incurred.
Extraordinarily on 24th August the party leader Jeffrey Titford wrote to the party secretary regarding his warning stating: “ The facts are that Nigel has permission to reproduce the video, this was given by Mosaic who made the programme. I have seen this letter.”
On the same day Farage sent an angry riposte to all NEC members which he had the foresight to banner headline “NOT FOR CIRCULATION” for it is difficult to reconcile its contents with the facts as they now appear.
On 25th August, Adam Alexander of Mosaic Films was again faxing Farage, this time with a clear warning that the Surrey Trading Standards Office were on the case and demanding that the pirated videos be sent to Gloucestershire to arrive by 30th August 2000.
On 30th August the other joint managing director of Mosaic films wrote to the UKIP Party Secretary with details of the correspondence between Farage and his colleague and insisted that no pirated copies be sold.
On 4th September 2000 the party received a letter from the Surrey County Council Trading Standards office confirming that on 24th August they had purchased a pirated video and that on 1st September they had visited the Redhill Southeast branch office and seized further copies and related documentation.
On 4th September 2000 a statement was put out by the party leader Jeffrey Titford, which in light of the now revealed facts, seems so extraordinary that it can only be quoted in full:-
UKIP & The Video ‘The Enemy Within’- A statement by Jeffrey Titford MEP, Leader, UK Independence Party
The BBC has spent a great deal of licence payers’ money producing a film series about the European Union. For reasons about which we can only speculate, the BBC has shown no inclination to screen on its terrestrial channels an episode that featured the UK Independence Party, despite the fact that UKIP MEPs went to great lengths to co-operate in the film’s production.
As a result, Nigel Farage MEP took a personal initiative to obtain copies of the film with a view to selling it to UKIP members in order to raise badly needed funds for the South East region. It subsequently transpired that distribution of the film to Party members would not be possible until it has been screened on a BBC subscription channel.
More recently, a Trading Standards Officer resorted to what amounted to deception in order to obtain a copy of the video and so prove that a technical offence has been committed. As a result, the videos have been returned to their source, where they will remain pending clarification.
Nigel accepts that he acted somewhat precipitously – though with the best intention of making the film available to a wider audience. I am also satisfied that no personal gain was either intended or realised. Any further enquiries or approaches on the matter, from whatever party involved, will be referred to the UKIP South East regional office.
This unfortunate matter would never have come about if the BBC properly fulfilled its Charter obligations in regard to balanced reporting. Also, I wholly deprecate the duplicitous tactics of Trading Standards at a time when their officers are terrorising small traders with an unlawful interpretation of Weights and Measures legislation, and turning a blind eye to the sale of thousands of illegal car number plates emblazoned with the infamous EU ring of stars.
Signed Jeffrey Titford London 4 September 2000
On 8th September 2000 Mosaic Films confirmed to the UKIP Party Secretary that at no time had they given Nigel Farage either verbal or written permission to sell the tapes. That same day the Party Secretary tendered his resignation, hardly surprising in view of the events detailed above, but even less so when put against the fact that throughout this period he had also been fending off a possible prosecution by the Metropolitan Police in connection with the removal of the UKIP database, in which strangely enough Nigel Farage’s name had also been involved.
We are conscious that this parade of facts on an internet site could rob those involved of the right to reply. WE WILL POST ANY REPLIES OR REFUTATIONS ANYONE MENTIONED IN THE ABOVE POST MIGHT CARE TO MAKE. Such should be sent to ukipuncovered@hotmail.com The e-mail link that was available on this site will be restored for such purposes as soon as possible. Other comments or advice are similarly always welcomed.
To view Martin Cole’s original posting, in context CLICK HEREIt is unfortunate that Martin Cole undermined his own credibility by publishing some most amusing fantasies and guessed at speculation about me that were such patently obviously speculative rubbish that it brought into question much else that he ‘claimed’ to be fact.Sadly Martin Cole seemed unable to differentiate between fact and fiction and failed to show what he could substantiate and that which he was inventing or that which was pure fantasy which he republished for others as with much of the vituperative drivel published, at the time, by Christina Speight who seemed to see herself as the Queen of the EUroSceptic movement for a brief period.I hope this background to the UKIP / Farage copyright saga is of help.I was given a copy of the video at the time and watched it – It was quite good and along the usual lines of show off showman for which Farage has become quite well known as an entertainer. Even in 1999 it was showing UKIP’s lack of gravitas and its knock about style of insults and humour, which passes for political ability in UKIP, which seems almost totally dependent on stunts, insults, bullying and abuse for its much vaunted but never visible (in UK Ballot Boxes!) great progress.
UKIP under its present unprofessional band wagon jumping and a dependency on ‘churning’ of members to attract new more naiive and less well informed members to the cult to replace those who have seen through the sham are what seems to keep them going at a cost to the tax payer running to 10s of £Millions over the years.
UKIP’s latest band wagon is IN / OUT referendum where from their pamphlet on the issue they make it abundantly clear they plan to loose and have failed to grasp the first principles of such a referendum. No doubt they will use this as a mechanism to ‘churn’ more members and to pocket the cash generated as they seemingly did with the £1/4 Million plus of public money that was spiritted away and never accounted by Nigel Farage, David Lott & Mark Croucher in the only petition of note they have claimed to run to date.
The petition never materialised but the money did vanish in much the same way as the Ashford campaign where less than 15% of the money raised ever reached UKIP, we were told by its own chairman. An apparent fraud that was seemingly covered up by Douglas Denny, John Moran, Andrew Smith, Nigel Farage and other scoundrels and nere do wells at the time.
We are also reminded by Barbara Booker that:
‘EUtopia’ was a series of twenty documentaries, eight of which went out on BBC2 during Summer 2000, with the remaining twelve switched to BBC Digital. I had forgotten that ‘The Enemy Within’, the programme featuring Nigel Farage, was broadcast on 7 September 2000 on BBC Knowledge.
I’m not sure everyone would agree that it was favourable to UKIP. It included Richard North calling the Spanish, “rag-arsed dagos”, and Nigel Farage swearing.
And that Jeffrey Titford lied when he made the statement:
The facts are that Nigel has permission to reproduce the video, this was given by Mosaic who made the programme. I have seen this letter”.He couldn’t have. The true facts were that Mosaic had expressly forbidden Farage to copy and or sell the programme, and insisted he refrain from doing so.
It is quite clear that on a consistent basis UKIP’s leadership and their clique and also their self serving claque, including those too ashamed to put their names to their dishonesties and defamatory claims are consitent strangers to the truth – all too willing to lie, cheat and steal as their track record shows.There can really be no argument that we are fortunate that UKIP, as it is, and has been, has never had any relevance in British domestic politics as power would clearly be abused and befouled by those in control of UKIP.
TO LEAVE THE EU
What is the Exit and Survival Plan for these United Kingdoms to maximise on the many benefits when we Leave-The-EU. It is the DUTY of our Politicians and Snivil Cervants to ensure the continuity, liberty and right to self determination of our peoples – they have a DUTY to protect against crime and secure both our food and our borders.
They also have a duty to put in place contingency plans for the collapse of The EUro & The EU or the wishes of the peoples of Britain to Leave-The-EU.
NONE of these DUTIES has a single British politician upheld for over 40 years. They have drawn their incomes fraudulently and dishonesty.
Politicians are failing to tell the truth, but so are almost all wanabe Politicians, the Main Stream Media and Snivil Cervants.
The fact is that even if EVERY British MEP wanted change in The EU it would achieve NOTHING, at very best if they ALL agreed they would then  still have less than a 10% say in the governance of Britain by The EU.
Every single British Politician, of EVERY Party, elected since before we joined the EUropean Common Market, has promised to change The EU’s CAP – In 40 Years they have achieved absolutely NOTHING towards that unanimous promise!
To try to put a value on OUR Freedom is as futile as floccipaucinihilipilification and as odious as the metissage of our societies, as we rummage in the ashes of our ancestors dreams, sacrifices and achievements, the flotsam of our hopes and the jetsam of our lives, consider the Country and Anglosphere which we thus leave our children and the future, with shame!
PLEASE POST THIS TAG AS FOLLOWS: ON YOUR eMAILS & BLOGS, FORUM POSTINGS & MAILINGS – GET THE MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE IT IS OUR BEST HOPE AS WHOEVER IS APPOINTED WILL MAKE NO DIFFERENCE AS PROVED!
I SUGGEST – since there is clearly no political party of repute, advocating or campaigning to Leave-The-EU for these United Kingdoms and restoration of our independent sovereign, democracy, with Justice & the right to self determination in a free country & minded that membership of The EU is sucking out the life blood and identity of our Country in a counter patriotic manner and at a cost in hard cash of some £53 Million a day we must consider:
Denying the self seeking & meaningless wanabe MEPs and the no longer relevant MPs the Mythical Mandate for which they clamour.
Diktat is imposed from The EU but Law should be made at Westminster, for our Country & our Peoples, by the peoples of our Country.
It is time that the entire mechanism of governance in these United Kingdoms, which has so clearly failed our Country and our peoples, was radically overhauled and updated to democratic status – failure to change will mean when we Leave-The-EU and/or it finally collapses, as it surely will, we will be no better off as the self same self styled, self enriching clique will be all too willing to betray us as they have done relative to The EU and its fore runners.
To achieve change support rational planning as with The Harrogate Agenda and similar thinking of gravitas.
Demand a Royal Commission on the cost benefits of leaving The EU and of remaining its vassals with a clear ‘Exit & Survival Strategy‘ for implementation OR responsible contingency planning dependent on THEN holding a Referendum on IN or OUT to Let-The-People-Decide!
John PETLEY of UKFirst & UKIP seeks approval!
In the form of a denunciation and expose of his colleagues in UKIP to the then titular leader Malcolm Lord Pearson acting as a stand in for Nigel Farage!
Hi,
you may well find this essay on UKIP by the somewhat strange John Petley, who to be fair sees almost all that he does, it seems, from the perspective of his personal belief in how valuable is his intellect and how he should be exceedingly well remunerated, and along side this an extremist and evangelical base for his superstitions as a self proclaimed Christian!Interestingly, when he failed to reach the levels of personal importance and income he believed he was worth he rather self importantly decamped to help form an alternative political party.
John Petley was one of the early members and thus founders and organisers of The UKFirstParty CLICK HERE
John Petley managed and largely wrote the web site for UKFP, but after the election when it became clear UKFP were not going to make the breakthrough they had hoped John Petley set out to ingratiate himself with  the politically incompetent UKIP leadership and wasreintegrated into UKIP and became a key member of Prof. Tim Congdon’s staff on what I understand is a grossly over generous remuneration, but you must judge for yoursel his worth and loyalty when you read the following text:
Introduction
I joined UKIP in 2001, having never before been a member of a political party. I lived in Hailsham, East Sussex at the time, and joined the Wealden Branch. I spoke for the party at three meetings during the 2004 European Parliamentary Campaign when we could not find two MEP candidates. On the strength of these performances, I found myself invited to become the PPC for Lewes in the 2005 General Election. During the campaign, I became acquainted with John Harvey, one of UKIP’s founder members who lives in a village just outside Lewes. I had been looking for a change of career after some 20 years in IT and asked if there was any chance of working for UKIP. John spoke to Nigel Farage, who in turn spoke to his then senior researcher Adrian Muldrew who asked me to produce a piece of research to test my suitability to join the team in Brussels. Both Adrian and the then head of staff, Heather Conyngham, liked what they read. I was invited out to Brussels for a day to be interviewed by Nigel Farage and David Lott in November 2005, and started work in Brussels in January 2006. By this time, my wife and I had moved to Herstmonceux, only three miles from Hailsham, but in the Bexhill & Battle constituency. I moved my membership to this branch, and indeed could well have ended up the PPC for them had I not had the problems outlined below.
The Farage problem – a personal perspective on a flawed personality
Many past and present UKIPpers started off initially impressed with Nigel Farage. My personal route from awe to disgust of the man is in a sense unique, but in other ways not untypical of what so many past and present UKIPpers have gone through. The first high profile UKIP speaker I heard was Jeffrey Titford, at a Democracy Movement meeting in St. Leonards, East Sussex about two years after I first joined the party. Jeffrey seemed to be talking sense, and I was reasonably impressed. On mentioning this to members of the branch in the area (Bexhill & Battle), the response from I received was, “Wait until you’ve heard Nigel Farage.” I was able to hear him a few months later in nearby Bexhill, and found his direct, hard-hitting style quite exciting and refreshing  – a contrast from most politicians in the three established parties. When criticism of Roger Knapman began to surface following the triumphs in the 2004 European Parliamentary elections, I picked up the feeling that many members at the time wanted to replace him not with Kilroy but with Nigel, feeling that a dynamic young leader would restore the momentum that we seemed to be losing. I would never have supported the removal of Roger. I felt that he was underestimated by the membership. (and having subsequently got to know him through working in Brussels, I believe this assessment was correct.) However, looking to when his term of office was to end, I would then have supported Nigel for leader.  He seemed the rising star – the obvious heir apparent.
Amidst all the adulation, the first criticism I first heard of Nigel was at a UKIP SE activists’ meeting from a member of a branch from Kent, who said he had a big ego. Until this point, the only negative thing I had heard about him was that he had not denied visiting a brothel in (I think) Athens, although this was only a rumour, and not a reliable source. My contact with him had been quite limited before starting in Brussels. He had struck me as “rather a lad” who liked his booze and fags, but I knew that I should not expect a politician necessarily to adhere to my Christian standards. I was looking forward to getting to know him better when I started my new job in Brussels, and felt rather in awe of him.
Within a couple of months, my view of him had begun to change. There were several reasons for this. Firstly, when he came to be the guest speaker at the annual dinner of my local UKIP Branch, Bexhill and Battle, his speech was disappointing. It was all about himself, and was a regurgitation of anecdotes I had heard before.  Secondly, there were further rumours of his sexual impropriety, including that he was having an affair with Annabelle Fuller, one of my colleagues in Brussels at the time, who subsequently achieved such notoriety in the UKIP press office and subsequently with the posting of John West’s interview. More serious was the fact that cronyism rather than competence seemed to be what counted. Brussels was very much Nigel’s empire, as he had been there as an MEP since 1999, was head of the UKIP delegation and co-president of the Ind Dem group. He had considerable say in who joined the staff, and what their roles were to be. Adrian Muldrew was complaining repeatedly about the low quality of work produced by two of the staff – one being Annabelle Fuller and the other Steve Reed, his current office assistant of whom more anon. David Lott, Chief of Staff and very much Nigel’s man, refused to take any action, and actually turned against Adrian. This seemed very odd. as I had been taken on ostensibly as part of a move to “professionalise” the party. I have only ever seen one piece of Annabelle’s work. I was looking at Flat Tax at the time, and she e-mailed me a document she had written saying “I am rather proud of this”. It talked about the 19th Century economist Ricardo. It looked to me as though most of it had been cut & pasted. It went into no great depth, and considering Annabelle was based in John Whittaker’s assistant’s office at the time, it hardly suggested she was a great force in the field of economics. I could have written as good if not better, and my degree was in music.
At this time, I first heard about the questions being asked about the South East region accounts. Another colleague of mine told me that he would never give any money to a general UKIP appeal because he had no confidence where the money would end up.
Although shocked by all this, I took the Biblical attitude of not wanting to believe an accusation unless there were two or three witnesses, I didn’t have to wait long for further evidence. A chance conversation with Heather Conyngham, who was still working out in Brussels for the first month I was there even though David Lott had now taken over, confirmed the essence of what I had been hearing, and added that Nigel had been a factor in every major UKIP bust-up since the departure of Alan Sked.
By the summer recess of 2006, a mere seven months since coming out to Brussels, I was now firmly of the opinion that Nigel Farage was a liability to the party. I heard from a colleague about a conversation between Farage and Gerard Batten shortly before the Bromley by-election. It transpired that Farage had discussed a deal with the Tories whereby if they selected the Eurosceptic but not withdrawalist MEP Syed Kamall as their candidate, UKIP would not put up a candidate. On hearing of this, Gerard was incensed and said, “If you don’t stand, I will.” As it happened, the Tories chose Bob Neill, and with Gerard being the ultra-loyalist that he is, he chose not to leak this out. Nigel then announced at a big UKIP meeting the following weekend about how excited he was at being able to contest another by-election. Most people cheered. I was livid.
I did not vote for him as party leader, but for a while it seemed that I would have to swallow my misgivings, as in the first few months of the Farage leadership, the party acquired two Lords, then the economist Tim Congdon and several other significant Eurosceptics. A year later, I was to discover from some statistics produced by the late Piers Merchant that this new sense of hope in the party was not matched by the opinion polls. UKIP  slumped to below 1%, and the start of the slump coincided with Farage’s election as leader.
I had heard of Farage’s habitual lying from other people, but had first hand evidence of it when David Abbott’s  $100 donation to a BNP support group in America was blown up in the national media in March 2007 simply because of David’s criticism of Nigel’s leadership. Before standing for the NEC, David came quite clean about this donation. He did not want to stand for office if it would compromise him. Being so insignificant a sum, a one-off and inadvertent, Nigel and others said it was not a problem. However, when David began to start opposing Nigel on the NEC, Nigel deliberately leaked this out to he press and made it out that David had been seriously involved with the BNP. When I challenged Nigel, saying that either he or Mark Croucher were ill-advised to have done this, his reply was “Neither I nor Croucher contacted the Press.” The Press had also spoken to a person I know who has held senior office in the party about the David Abbott business, and this person told me that when the reporter concerned rang up, he said, “I’ve just been speaking to Mark Croucher.”
Perhaps I should add that this exchange occurred when Nigel summoned me into his office and questioned me about my friendship with Adrian Muldrew. Adrian was by now absolutely persona non grata with Nigel, but a few months earlier, Adrian had kindly offered me a home for a couple of weeks when there had been a temporary delay in moving into new accommodation in Brussels. I had left Adrian’s house quite a while before my interview with Nigel, but what business was it of his anyway?
Being summoned into Nigel’s office was by now an ordeal which I dreaded. I had to summon up my best acting skills and always stared him straight in the eye. He often shuffled his legs up and down under the table – a sure sign that he wasn’t comfortable either. Some times, it was nothing to worry about, and he was usually pleased with he research I did for him. However, once he came into my office and ranted at me because I had contacted Mike Nattrass (whose assistant I was for a while) about a dubious amendment to a piece of Parliamentary legislation put forward at Committee stage by Jens-Peter Bonde, Ind Dem Co-president, in the name of the group. Adrian had spotted this and said that UKIP MEP’s couldn’t support it, as it was giving more power to the EU (I can’t remember the exact details beyond this) I thought I had better tell Mike, and Mike must have contacted Nigel, who then stormed in and said, “But we always vote against this in Plenary.” I guess Nigel knew I wasn’t happy with UKIP MEP’s being in Ind Dem.
On the subject of lying, Farage claimed that Tom Wise had been expelled from the party. This is not true. Tom had the UKIP whip withdrawn from him when it was known he was under investigation, but Tom remained a UKIP member until he let his membership lapse in 2009. He was even contacted asking if he would give money towards the 2009 European Election campaign.
It was not just over Ind Dem that I disagreed with Nigel’s policy. He spoke at Hastings in November 2005 and said something on the lines of, “Well, UKIP isn’t getting much exposure because the EU isn’t in the news much now, but just wait- it’ll be back on the agenda.” He was proved right with a vengeance when the failed Constitution metamorphosised into the Lisbon Treaty, but he singularly missed the opportunity to put UKIP at the head of the campaign to oppose it. It was always going to be a tough battle to stop the treaty, but it would have put the party back in the consciousness of the electorate. Instead, it was left to an ordinary Party member to launch the “Parish Polls” initiative. On the day of the mass lobby of the House of Commons, Farage was in Brussels. I know, because I heard his voice in the corridor outside my office. This missed opportunity, for which he must take the blame, must represent UKIP’s biggest political mistake in its entire history.
I had the task for the last year of answering difficult e-mails sent to Head Office in Newton Abbot. I always took the party line, even if I was personally uncomfortable with it, such as over Nigel’s defiance of the Parliament’s smoking ban and support for pro-smoking groups. Only once, when I was forwarded a query about Derek Clark signing Ind Dem’s “Bucharest declaration” on UKIP’s behalf with its support for subsidiarity and CAP reform did I deviate from this rule, and simply passed it to Ind Dem enthusiast Gawain Towler to answer. I felt this e-mail was a poisoned chalice. If I took the party line, not only would it sit uneasily with my conscience, but it could be held against me if at a later date (as I hoped) UKIP would renounce Ind Dem. However, if I had said what I felt – that I agreed with the e-mail, that the signing was a mistake and that UKIP’s MEP’s should not be in Ind Dem – Nigel would have gone ballistic if he had found out. Fortunately, Gawain never followed up my reasons for passing this e-mail on, so I lived to fight another day. Another lie was perpetrated in Nigel’s name about this: when party members rang up the South East Regional office in anger about the Bucharest declaration, they wee told it was nothing to do with Nigel. Only when it became apparent that too many copies of the e-mail proving he had a hand in its wording (I still have a copy at home) did the line change.
By the summer of 2007, I felt that I was living on borrowed time. In many ways, I am amazed I lasted so long. I ensured that no-one was around when I rang any known opponents of Farage in the UK, and he never knew just who I knew. I always kept my office door closed, and fortunately, the enthusiasm of Farage and his cronies to go off most evenings drinking in O’Farrell’s (the Irish pub very near to the Parliament building) meant I had some privacy.
By this time, staff and MEP’s were split down the middle. Farage supporters, notably Gawain and the odious Aurelie Laloux (Jeffrey Titford’s assistant) held the senior positions among the staff. When Aurelie went off for maternity leave, things improved somewhat, but her return signalled the start of three awful months. The atmosphere in the office from February 2008 to my departure in April gave me an inkling of what it must have been like to live in the Soviet Union – You were always watching your back and every pair of footsteps outside the office door made you feel uneasy. So bizarre that fellow-withdrawalists should be the cause of such a poisonous atmosphere. I have to say that in over two years working in Brussels, I had no animosity from the “nasty” EU. UKIP staff were treated fairly.
My dismissal shows the utterly devious nature of Farage. He was not directly involved, but his fingerprints are all over it. It all began on Monday 7th April 2008 after Roger Knapman’s “Stop the Treaty” conference in Bristol the previous Saturday which I had gone to. When I got back to Brussels, I tried to access my parliamentary e-mail account, but was unable to do so. I entered the password about 10 times, but was repeatedly blocked. I know that I did not type in my password incorrectly. Having worked in IT before going into research, I knew hacking when I saw it. The hacker had, fortunately, failed to guess my password, but had locked me out. I spoke to Oumar Dombouya, the man delegated to manage IT affairs for Ind Dem. He re-set my password and set a monitoring facility on my account, as Adrian had had a similar problem, and suspected hacking.
On Thursday afternoon (10th April), Graham Booth came into my office with a print-out of the names, subjects and dates of the e-mails I had sent in recent weeks. He asked me to print out the contents of four of these. After he had left the office, I looked at a couple of these e-mails on my computer, and as I was doing so, the access to my e-mail account suddenly went down. When I eventually was able to bring up the initial screen and try to sign on, once again, I was locked out, just as I had been the previous Monday.
I subsequently discovered that it is within the rules to print out the list (although not the content) of the e-mails sent by EP staff without asking them. However, I did not know this at the time, and refused to take Booth ‘s word that this was the case or provide him with the content of these e-mails until I could establish the facts. In view of my suspicions about someone trying to tamper with my e-mails, I think this was quite reasonable. However, his response to my refusal my saying that in his eyes, this amounted to a “lack of trust” in me, This was the catch-all phrase that can be used to dismiss staff if you don’t like them but can’t find any good reason for sacking them. I had always got on fairly well with Graham until then, and I know Nigel set him up, because he expressed a very negative opinion of one person to whom these e-mails were sent (a branch chairman in the South East) and when I contacted this individual, he said that he had never had any dealings with Graham. Only Nigel could have singled out this e-mail.
Oumar was very helpful initially to my attempts to find out who had been hacking into my account. He traced it to a UK-registered machine (no surprise!) but could not go any further because of intimidation by Hermann Verheirstraten, a senior member of the Ind Dem secretariat. He subsequently kept his distance from me, simply out of fear.
My dismissal was e-mailed to me on Thursday 24th April. This was a Strasbourg plenary, and I was teleworking at the time. Quite honestly, it was a relief not to have to go back to Brussels. It amazed me to hear afterwards from Piers Merchant that Graham Booth had been going round the South West telling people that I (along with Adrian Muldrew and Gary Cartwright) were MI5 spies! Meanwhile, Steve Harris, UKIP’s South East regional organiser, again no doubt mouthing Nigel’s words, has been telling people in the South East that my dismissal was because I was hacking into other people’s e-mails!
A statement about this illegal hacking was made to the Belgian police.  I have copies of the documents  at home.
My desire to see Nigel removed permanently from any position of political influence is not a case of sour grapes because he sacked me. He sacked me because I already held this opinion, and I am not very good at hiding my feelings. I remember having a conversation with Roger Knapman outside his office, and saying something about, “the days when we had a decent leader.” At that moment, Nigel came up the corridor. He can’t fail to have heard what I said.
The party has been in the grip of a man who I can only describe as evil. The poison emanating from him has been the main reason why UKIP looked like it was going to go nowhere in the early part of 2009 until Stuart Wheeler’s donation saved the day. Now he is no longer leader, his influence over the party must be brought to an end once and for all. The withdrawalist cause needs a more honourable spokesman to fight its cause. His personal failings, which I have described above, have been coupled with exceedingly poor political judgement and a disastrous policy in Brussels.
Playing on innocence
Many of those who joined UKIP, myself included, were new to politics. We could see that being in the EU was not in Britain’s best interests, but did not necessarily combine this piece of wisdom with political discernment. I would guess I am not alone in admitting that at one point, I believed two things I now regard as erroneous – firstly that anything in print that says something bad about the EU must be correct, and secondly that anyone opposed to Britain’s membership of the EU must be a good chap. I will address the first of these mistakes later on. It is the second I want to concentrate on at this point.
Nigel’s shrewdness has enabled him to carve out his power base in the party. His relative youth and undoubted eloquence have made him a hero with many party members. Steve Harris once told a meeting at which I was present of a phone call were someone asked him, “When is that young man going to become Prime Minister?” I have no reason to doubt that Steve was telling the truth. It epitomises how Nigel has played on the innocence of many party members. They have not had sufficient experience to spot when his leadership has been poor. He would not have dared depict the dressing up in chicken costumes of three members of staff in Strasbourg on the front of Independence unless he was sure that his adoring fans would think it was a wonderful gesture rather than the appalling schoolboy buffoonery that the rest of the world viewed it as.
He has been able to gain total control over UKIP’s media. “You don’t work for the party, you work for me,” he told one employee in the Press Office. That admirable quality of trust which is a feature of so many UKIP members has enabled him to turn the Independence into a very one-sided view of things. UKIP’s decent, loyal members are not aware of the control he has carved out for himself. He has marshalled party opinion behind him by equating opposition to himself with “attempts to destroy the party.” The suppression of dissent is not healthy in a political party. It leads to “yes men” ending up in senior positions – a sure recipe for disaster.
The Brussels disaster as I saw it from 2006 to 2008.
One blogger recently mocked UKIP by saying how ridiculously inflated the role of an MEP had become in the party. Other parties don’t send out their first XI to Brussels, but being an MEP gives you almost god-like status among some sections of the membership of UKIP.
The big point of disagreement I would have with this statement is that UKIP has most definitely NOT sent out its First XI to Brussels. In 2004, Nigel was unable to stop London choosing  Gerard Batten for the No. 1 spot, nor to stop Roger Knapman being elected in the South West. However, his objective of ensuring that he ended up with a team in which he would be the star was in 2004, to a degree, successful. The result was an unmitigated disaster.
I have referred to the innocence of many party members. The idea that the MEP lists were manipulated would never have crossed most of our minds back in 2004.  Nigel had to be careful because he had already built up a structure in which the party’s MEP’s would operate, and better to have someone unsuitable but who would not ask questions rather than a competent individual who, besides challenging Nigel’s pre-eminence, might ask too many questions, especially on financial matters. No-one should be allowed to become an MEP if they might query why, for instance, David Lott claimed some €1500 for three nights in Strasbourg! (I have seen a copy of the invoice) I would suspect that even with Piers Merchant having written a report on the 2009 MEP selection process, most members would be unaware of the chicanery that went on.
In the five years from 1999 to 2004, he had made the acquaintance of people like Jens-Peter Bonde – a past master at making money out of Euroscepticism. The Ind Dem Group, like its precursor EDD, was a fairly loose coalition of assorted Eurosceptics from both the left and right of the political spectrum who joined together purely for the financial benefit of being in a group. UKIP were the only withdrawalists in this group – a fact that raised eyebrows on several occasions when I mentioned it to party members. Ind Dem encouraged a culture of financial secrecy, and Farage bought into this. I Was told that one French member of staff walked uninvited into the office of  Klo Vangrenderbeek, Ind Dem’s secretary General, and found her counting large numbers of banknotes. She was sacked on the spot. This member of staff’s name  was Genevieve  Locqueville, and I am sure I can find her contact details if you wish to verify the story. All very suspicious.
It is not just the financial issues that have contributed to the disaster of UKIP’s MEPs in Brussels – there have been all too many instances of poor, ill-prepared speeches. Graham Booth’s setting himself up as an authority on climate change on the strength of an “O” level in astronomy was an embarrassment. I wrote speeches for some MEP’s and have seen them mutilated and spoilt by the MEP in question. Sometimes, it has been an embarrassment to listen to them in the Plenaries. There were exceptions, notably Roger Knapman, who ensures his speeches are well-written, and Gerard Batten, who always writes his own speeches after careful research. Sadly, however, Godfrey Bloom’s infamous speech in 2004 about women cleaning behind fridges has set an all-too-common precedent.
The press have been all too ready to pounce on bad behaviour by UKIP’s MEP’s. Tom Wise was unfortunate to be duped by an undercover reporter on the subject of MEP’s allowamnces. Nigel was lucky that the occasion when he was so drunk in a bar Strasbourg that he had to be carried out did not receive more coverage than it did.
Besides the MEP’s, the staff did not always delivered the goods. All too many of Gawain Towler’s press releases were bad to the point of embarrassment. Gawain was Ind Dem press officer when I worked in Brussels. I remember once being asked once to write a press release. Gawain subsequently edited it and replaced one word with another meaning the exact opposite! While I cannot prove this, I would suspect that some 90% of press releases would have gone straight into the editors’ wastepaper bins. On another occasion, at a meeting of a think tank in Brussels where the guest speaker was Dan Mitchell, a senior fellow of the Heritage Foundation, an American think tank Gawain turned up seriously drunk. He introduced me to this man (I had yet to fall out of favour at this time) but I was acutely embarrassed. Gawain has also admitted to me that he has smoked over 100 joints!
Aurelie Laloux is another disaster. She was taken on by UKIP in the 1999-2004 Parliament because of her excellent linguistic skills, as only in 2004 was English placed alongside French in official Parliamentary communications. Her political judgement is less acute, and had led to some very bizarre voting lists being produced which UKIP’s enemies like Labour MEP Richard Corbett have been delighted to publish. When there was a debate on the Lisbon Treaty at Strasbourg in early 2008, the Green group (or was it the Communists?) proposed a “rejection amendment” – i.e. that the treaty should be rejected. Aurelie’s voting list, prepared for UKIP’s MEP’s, did not have us supporting this amendment. She was also responsible for choosing which debates UKIP’s MEP’s will speak in. Her choice was quite bizarre at times, giving the speechwriters (such as myself) the challenge of preparing speeches offering very little opportunity for the MEP to make any telling point, as the debate may have been on something quite obscure – such as updating EU air traffic agreements with countries in North Africa to include the new member states.
As for Nigel’s assistant Steve Reed, he deserves a chapter to himself. We will look at him under the heading, “Professionalising the Party?” His voting lists can be a bit bizarre, and unlike  Aurelie, he cannot plead the excuse that he is not working in his mother tongue.
The philosophy is that UKIP must vote against and speak against everything. What happens when the EU proposes something that will actually command widespread popular support, such as the forced reduction in mobile phone roaming charges? Credit where credit was due from the strongly Eurosceptic former DUP MEP Jim Allister, who said, “It makes a pleasant change to welcome a piece of EU legislation. The enforced reduction in mobile roaming charges is good for consumers across Europe.“  However UKIP had to find something negative, such as the fact that the main beneficiaries would be people like MEP’s themsleves who make many international calls on mobile phones. While it is true that the mandate for UKIP’s MEP’s mandate is never to vote in favour of any EU regulation, if there is likely to be strong popular support for individual moves, it is surely better to abstain, or at least keep quiet, and keep the powder dry for the really serious issues.
I have not mentioned the corruption aspects and the ongoing investigations by OLAF – the EU Anti-fraud watchdog – into Ind Dem (including some UKIP MEP’s and staff), but this has done nothing to help the party, and the imprisonment of Tom Wise, four years after Daniel Foggo first revelaed his improprieties, is unlikely to be the only such embarrassment for the Party.  OLAF have been recently making other investigations.
Few UKIP MEP’s have availed themselves of the opportunity to used the Brussels staff for serious research. Gerard Batten is an honourable exception, with the excellent How much does the EU cost Britain?  Booklets, which are produced by the Bruges group and updated each year.  Apart from this, only Tom Wise, whose assistant Gary Cartwright produced a booklet on fisheries, and Roger Knapman, showed any interest in this important area. For seven MEP’s therefore, an excellent opportunity has gone begging.
Hard though it is to say it. the UKIP team, both MEP’s and staff, convey the image of a bungling bunch of amateurs. There are some honourable exceptions, and I have tried to highlight these. I would strongly refute any suggestion that  UKIP’s disaster in Brussels has been because “they knw we don’t like the EU.”  Yes, it is true that the Parliament’s president shows more leniency to pro-EU MEP’s than to UKIP when their speeches overrun. This apart, I would say that the disaster has been self-inflicted and would have been avoidable with a better calibre of both MEP’s and staff. Perhaps the best illustration of the disaster UKIP has turned into is the infamous “Chicken Costume” incident  in Strasbourg two years ago. I can vouch for this being Nigel’s idea. When the three staff members (Gawain Towler, Paul Nuttall and Ralph Atkinson) were escorted from the area near the Hemicycle by the security staff, it led to a very heated but almost surreal press conference, firstly with Gawain (still in his costume minus the chicken head!) and then Nigel, complaining bitterly to the media that the reason we were being treated unfairly in not being allowed to parade around in these outfits was because we opposed the Lisbon Treaty. What noinsense! No wonder the rest of the European Parliament saw UKIP as a bit of a joke.At least no MEP had dressed up, although only because Gary Cartwright and I had been able to work on Joyce Nattrass to persuade her husband not to be a chicken – he had originally volunteered for this ridiculous stunt!
An unconvincing domestic agenda.
UKIP has always professed to be a fully-fledged political party. It has produced manifestos which range over a number of domestic issues besides withdrawal from the EU and areas with strong EU links, such as immigration. However, right up to and beyond the 2005 General Election, in spite of the manifesto produced for that occasion, UKIP was perceived not only by the public but by many members as essentially a single-issue party. My experience standing for the party in Lewes at that time was fairly typical – I could articulate the issues relating to the EU pretty well, but put me into a debate where the focus was a domestic issue like education and I was out of my depth. I had read the manifesto, but it really wasn’t much help.
In early 2006, when David Bannerman became chairman, things began to change on this front. He launched the “Five Right Things to do” initiative that took UKIP into new territory such as education, law and order and tax. Yes, as mentioned, we had touched on these and other areas in earlier manifestos, but not in the sort of depth now being proposed.
It is perhaps hard for me to be objective here, as I did much of the donkey work for the education policy of 2006. David Lott said that it was “the best policy document that UKIP had ever produced.”  It put UKIP in touch with education pressure groups such as the excellent “Campaign for Real Education” and in fact led to the retired probation officer and author David Fraser if not joining the party certainly becoming more sympathetic to it – a real first for the party. Until now, people had only ever joined UKIP over EU-related issues.
A few months later, John Whittaker’s Flat Tax policy was launched at a fringe meeting during the 2006 Tory Party conference in Bournemouth. This again strengthened he party’s links with groups like the Taxpayers’ Alliance, who were represented at the launch.
However, these initiatives do not seem to have turned UKIP in the public eye from a single-issue party. The problem is that UKIP hasn’t been able to take ownership of this ground. Its dabbling in domestic politics has not been convincing. Part of the problem is having had a leader with no ability to speak convincingly and informedly on domestic issues. He has little interest in the minutiae of domestic policy and has never really allowed decent spokesmen their head. The person he did delegate policy work to, Bannerman, never succeeded in achieving a policy launch having anything like the profile of the Flat Tax announcement.  Bannerman’s competence is questionable. His chairmanship of the Bow Group is one of few features about his life not in dispute. How someone with this supposed breadth of policy experience, particularly in the field of transport can propose electrifying a line which was closed 41 years ago beats me!  I can vouch for the fact that this proposal was included in the first draft of the UKIP transport policy document.
These policy initiatives have failed to change either the public perception of UKIP nor the thinking of some party members. Two years on from my struggles in Lewes, I was seconded to help out with the Sedgefield by-election, and for all my enthusiasm to ensure our candidate was well briefed on domestic policies, he just kept going back to the EU all the time. The UKIP  candidates in the 2010 General Election will largely be in the same position, unless drastic steps are taken very shortly . If the candidates are not confident with a broader agenda, how can the electorate be convinced that UKIP is more than just a single-issue party?
Professionalisng the Party?
The second catchphrase in early 2006 alongside “Five Right Things to do” was “Professionalisng the Party.” I came out to Brussels quite humbled at the thought of being part of this process, seeing as I was a newcomer to political research. Nearly three years on, I cannot seriously believe that Nigel ever had any intention of making UKIP a professional party.
We need to go back to Brussels to see how shallow of the talk of “professionalism” is. Nigel’s office assistant out there is Steve (or Andrew) Reed – an individual whom I bear no personal grudge towards, but whose competence is highly dubious, to say the least.
Steve is a conspiracy theorist of the most eccentric type. He also writes the most grotesque English and has a serious drink problem.  The net result is this letter, sent out from Nigel’s office in response to correspondence from a member of the public about the situation in Zimbabwe two years ago:-
Zimbabwe is certainly a country under siege from the “international community”, whose neo-colonial policies in Africa are thinly disguised as “humanitarian intervention” in conflicts, which it may well have instigated, just as they were in Yugoslavia, Iraq and Afghanistan.
So embarrassing was this letter, which also stated that the EU was worse than Zimbabwe, that extracts from it appeared in the Independent newspaper, and was the reason why a hastily-cobbled together “UKIP Statement on Zimbabwe” suddenly appeared on the party’s website. Yet Steve lived to fight another day and to produce this  response to a letter which simply asked the MEP’s to support a written declaration on the setting-up of a Europe-wide register of missing children, following the McCanns’ visit to the European Parliament:-.
European coöperation, furthermore, is rather hindered, than helped, by the centralised bureaucracies of the EU, which, by abolishing national frontiers, have made EU-territory a playground for all types of crime, and which, in general, are rather intent on extending their powers than on governing wisely and well.  This is only to be expected of an organisation, which lacks all democratic accountability…Indeed, the only way the huge, multilingual territories of the EU can be governed is by means of a repressive police-state, where every identity, asset and movement is monitored.
I have a collection of other such gems.
Steve’s briefing documents for the MEP’s display a similar lack of professionalsim. Instead of sticking to a simple summary of proposed legislation, he likes to have a rant about the EU. That’s not the job of an assistant. Gerard Batten has expressed extreme frustarion over this, but Steve remains in the Farage assistant office!
Gawain Towler’s incompetence has laready been mentioned. He has a background in the press, and appears to be widely connected but the quality of his work leaves much to be deisred.
Turning to the UK, the bigggest failing has been the total lack of any  program to train party activists. UKIP contains many enthusiastic and committed members who have never been involved in politics before. They have joined because they have read or heard something that has convinced them that Britain should leave the EU. Now while there are good sound reasons for supporting Britain’s withdrawal, there are also all manner of crackpot conspiracy theories doing the rounds, and some party members have regurgitated these in all innocence, believing that anyone saying bad  things about the EU must be telling the truth. A professional party should have been providing education at all levels to ensure that party members are gven the tools to separate fact from fiction. I took the initiative whe I was out in Brussels and produced a little leaflet called the “Mythbuster” to help in this area, and distributed a few copies to people who asked about it. It came about when the West Sussex County Organiser, John Wallace, asked me to check a leflet he was planning to distribute in the county. I was horrrified to see how he had been quoting from the most wacky of conspiracy theorists without any check as to whether there was any reality behind what they were saying. I should not have to take this initiative. It is this sort of thing that has given UKIP something of an image problem – Cameron’s comments about “fruitcakes and loonies” has sometimes been closer to the mark than we would like.
The result of this lack of professionalsim is that the party has failed to advance among a key sector of the population. A good few people, possibly some 1/3 of the voting population, have a visceral dislike of the EU and have been easily won over to a withdrawalist position. They may not necessarily be UKIP voters, but they would agree with the overall stance of the party. There are also another significant group, my estimate being a further 1/3 of all voters, who have misgivings about the EU, but are not solidly in the withdrawalist camp. Maybe they have been conned by the propaganda of the three established parties, or perhaps they are still weighing up the arguments. As a generality, these will be serious thinkers. Such people are not going to be convinced by conspiracy theory claptrap, chicken costumes or gimmicky, silly cartoons. Focus groups have painted a picture of UKIP as a negative party, and I would venture that some who voiced this opinion include representatives of this “middle third” that UKIP should be addressing. It will require a positive approach to win these people over, which UKIP has this far failed to make. Sadly, UKIP’s failure to advance among this important section of the electorate has set back the cause of independence by several years.  It is the Taxpayers’ Alliance, who have just produced an excellent book, Ten Years On – Britain without the European Unin – who are really setting the agenda at the moment.
NEC problems and other structural failings.
The NEC is meant to represent the membership. It has been reduced to rubber-stamping Nigel’s decisions. Whether those on the NEC have been fairly voted into office is another matter – Lisa Duffy, a fairly unknown figure until her elevation to the NEC, apparently received more votes in the 2008 NEC election than Nigel received in the party leadership election two years earlier! Naturally, she has taken the Farage line. Since 2004, the story of the NEC is a procession of well-intentioned members either resigning or being forced out. It is claimed that some NEC members disagree in private with some of the things that Nigel does. All well and good, but they usually voted in support of his suggestions, and failed to support Delroy Young, Dr David Abbott and Dr Eric Edmond who have had the bravery to express their misgivings openly.
Another serious structural failing is the inability of the party to remove the leader. In the days of  Kilroy’s membership, the rules were tightened up in this area. The net result is that any initiative to remove Nigel always fell foul of the sheer logistics required to call an egm.
At the core of the party is a culture of cronyism and secrecy. During the selection of candidates for the 2009 European Parliamentary elections, the South West wanted the Electoral Commission to handle the selection from start to finish, but this was rejected. The result has been a series of unanswered questions and threatened court action – especially in the Eastern Region whereby Robin Page and John West never appeared on the list and the Farage favourite Bannerman ended up in pole position. The removal of Gregg Beaman  from the No. 1 spot in the North West was also shrouded in controversy. Were the results fiddled even in the South East? One candidate in the South East region sent a delegate to the count, who saw a good number of ballot papers with votes for Farage and Andreasen only. In a straw poll of my local branch committee, not one person said they had voted in this way. It all looks very suspicious, and the official response to these gripes of, “Well, be thankful you’re not a Tory. Their existing MEP’s automatically get the top slots” is just not acceptable. It epitomises the fact that the membership have very little power in the party. The Political Committee is appointed, not chosen. Paul Nutall, the previous chairman was appointed without the NEC being previously consulted. The control of all the official media outlets, including the Independence newsletter, means that real debate is not possible.
When the Lechlade Group think-tank was set up, Nigel told the then party General Secretary Geoffrey Kingscott that his first task was to get it closed down. He was initially no more supportive of the widely reported “Parish Poll” campaign, that was set up by an ordinary UKIP member in Dorset.
Thanks to the innocence of many party members noted above, UKIP – the party that professes to believe in “bottoms-up” democracy and whose members sing the praises of Switzerland’s political system – became under Nigel Farage the most top-down party in British politics.
Financial problems
The last subject to be considered is the timebomb of financial scandal ticking away. Some pretty damning data about the Ashford Call Centre has been in the Public domain for a number of years. Activists have pressed for answers and have been fobbed off time after time.
Even small issues suggest that there is something fishy in how money is handled. Why can members not renew their membership by Direct Debit? So simple, so what is the problem?
Another odd issue is how UKIP seems to find so much money for big by-elections, especially if Nigel or one of his close associates is the candidate. Money seemed no object in Bromley, 2006 or Sedgefield 2007. What is notable here is how expensive each UKIP vote seems to be. With the different parties’ expenses and votes available on various websites, analysis of UKIP’s performance against other small parties, notably comparing UKIP with the BNP in the Henley by-election, shows that they gain fair more votes per £100 spent than UKIP. UKIP spent £17.056 and received 843 votes. The BNP spent £4,744.06, less that 1/3 of UKIP’s budget, but polled 1,243 votes – over 40% more than UKIP.
So this is why I left
A year ago, UKIP looked like it was doomed. Resignations of both ordinary members and high-profile people like Robin Page and Tim Congdon pointed to a party in terminal decline. Even in early 2009 with the European Parliamentary Election a few months away, UKIP’s standing was very low and most UKIP watchers were expecting the party to return 2 or 3 MEPs. A number of us were convinced that scandals, including some of a sexual and financial nature, were going to hit UKIP, focussed especially on Nigel Farage. Not wanting to see the BNP become the main beneficiaries, we set up UK First, trying to learn the lessons from UKIP’s mistakes. We always emphasised that we had nothing against the rank and file UKIP members, only Farage and his little clique. I still keep up with some members of my local branch, and was even rung up by another friend in the Wealden branch just before the leadership election asking for advice on who to vote for!
By the time Stuart Wheeler came to UKIP’s rescue, it was too late. We had to stand even though we had not seen the defections we had hoped for, although even in the final days before the election, I was convinced that some scandal was gong to break. Amazingly, even Farage’s admission to Dennis McShane that he claimed £2,000,000 in expenses failed to dent the UKIP vote.
 An unexpected opportunity
The news that Farage was going to resign as leader came as a complete shock. I believe that this can offer one last chance to turn the party round and make it a real force in domestic politics. A strong, credible, well-led UKIP will either force Cameron to concede a referendum or else will be able to collect far larger numbers of Withdrawalist Tories, including MPs than has been the case thus far. I don’t personally mind if UKIP does end up being no more than a group that forces the Tories to take us out of the EU – as long as someone gets us out, I don’t care who.
I would re-join UKIP if I could be honourably reinstated by an honourable leadership. I never though I would be saying this, but there is a chance. However, I believe that if UKIP is to have a serious future, serious changes need to take place. Looking firstly at Brussels:-
1)      UKIP MEPs should not be part of a political group or any Pan-European party. Roger Knapman and Tom Wise proved that you do not need to be in a group to get decent allowances to employ staff and produce literature. While it is possible that some seats in 2014 may be reserved for Pan European parties, this is a smokescreen for getting more money. If UKIP does its stuff, we will not need to contest the 2014 elections – we could be a free country by then. UKJIP’s MEPs are elkected to do themselves out of a job. If the MEPs are non-attached, they can publish material saying UKIP rather than the name of the group.
2)      UKIP MEPs should not get involved in committees and should only go out to Brussels or Strasbourg when something of national importance is being debated. Withdrawing from a group mean they don’t have to go out in the group weeks either. The battle for independence  will be won or lost in the UK. That is where the MEPs should spend most of their time, even if it means less in expenses.
3)      Regional and Head Office staff must be paid not out of MEPs’ budgets. Quite apart from the fact that this policy is in blatant breach of EU rules and is likely to come back to haunt the 2004-9 MEPs, it has been one factor in giving the MEPs too much power over the party. I gather that shortly after the 2004 triumph, Nigel was asked about looking for supporters in the City for funds. Nigel turned this idea down, but it would have made regional staff more independent and less in the pockets of MEPs.
4)      MEPs can legitimately use staff for research, but as mentioned above, they have largely failed to do so. Although Lee Rotherham’s Ten Years On book is excellent, it is not the last word. A detailed study should be produced of what exactly would be involved in our actually leaving the EU – i.e. what we would have to change, what EU laws are sensible. The better the road map that can be produced, the more  easly the argument for withdrawal can be won.
5)      Any MEP who will not produce a detailed summary of their expenses should be expelled from the party.
Secondly, turning to the rank and file party membership, they need to be trained to understand politics, and to be able to argue convincingly on domestic issues. A lot of the members I have met largely think intuitively on the right lines, but their thinking needs to be “joined up”. They need to be educated on why small government is a good thing, grammar schools are good, why we don’t need to raise taxes, the immorality of  “behavioural” taxes like green taxes, etc.
And the message about withdrawal needs to be presented in a more positive light. Rather than always saying “This bit of EU legislation is bad”, UKIP should be saying “Outside the EU , life would be so much better because of x,y, and z.” Lee Rotherham’s book hits the right note here.
Just a few thoughts. I could go on, but this had better do for now.
TO LEAVE THE EU
What is the exit and survival plan for these United Kingdoms to maximise on the many benefits of leaving The EU. It is the DUTY of our Politicians and Snivil Cervants to ensure the continuity, liberty and right to self determination of our peoples – they have a DUTY to protect against crime and secure both our food and our border.
NONE of these DUTIES has a single British politician upheld for 40 years. They have drawn their incomes fraudulently and dishonesty.
Politicians are failing to tell the truth, but so are almost all wanabe Politicians, the MSM and Snivil Cervants.
The fact is that even if EVERY British MEP wanted change in The EU it would achieve NOTHING.
Every single British Politician, of EVERY Party, elected since before we joined the EUropean Common Market, has promised to change The EU’s CAP – In 40 Years they have achieved absolutely NOTHING towards that goal of unanimity in aim!
To try to put a value on OUR Freedom is as futile as floccipaucinihilipilification and as odious as the metissage of our societies, as we rummage in the ashes of our ancestors dreams, sacrifices and achievements, the flotsam of our hopes and the jetsam of our lives, consider the Country and Anglosphere which we thus leave our children and the future, with shame!
I SUGGEST – since there is clearly no political party of repute, advocating or campaigning to Leave-The-EU for these United Kingdoms and restoration of our independent sovereign, democracy, with Justice & the right to self determination in a free country & minded that membership of The EU is sucking out the life blood and identity of our Country in a counter patriotic manner and at a cost in hard cash of some £53 Million a day we must consider:
Denying the self seeking & meaningless wanabe MEPs and the no longer relevant MPs the Mythical Mandate for which they clamour.
Diktat is imposed from The EU but Law should be made at Westminster, for our Country & our Peoples by the peoples of our Country.
It is time that the entire mechanism of governance in these United Kingdoms, which has so clearly failed our Country and our peoples, was radically overhauled and updated to democratic status – failure to change will mean when we Leave-The-EU and/or it finally collapses, as it surely will, we will be no better off as the self same self styled, self enriching clique will be all too willing to betray us as they have done relative to The EU and its fore runners.
#131* – EUkip In Self Destruction Mode!
Clean EUkip up NOW & make UKIP electable!
MORE PUBLICITY OF EUkip’s LEADERSHIP WITCH HUNT & SPIN
Hi,
There are numerous inaccuracies in the article below but hardly surprising as having spoken to Graham Dines on Friday afternoon he had written the story based on EUkip’s propaganda and I gather John West, unwilling to damage the Party on an issue which is ‘effectively’ sub judice had refused to make a statement.
You will note that the paper perpetuates the myth EUkip is ‘peddlin’ that Gulleford & Titford have been ‘cleared’ by the police – which is NOT true but the paper has done a bit of its own research proving that OLAF have been passed the active file by the police – one of the investigation numbers is OLAF OF/2008/0764/Titford.
We understand having done our own enquiry that the alleged offences were rightly reported to the police by John West, seemingly in a mallicious act of diversionary tactic, John West and others in the Eastern Region have been become a part of Nigel Farage’s to seize absolute control of the party inventing & creating a ‘Reichstag Fire’ moment.
It would seem that intimidation, ambush and kangarro courts have become the order of the day – could this be to intimidate others in the party not to speak out and tell the truth, maybe even to try to perpetuate the climate of cover-up and obfuscation of other financial and democratic irregularities, even crimes, within the party.
For an aspirant political party to get itself featured in the media as having lied about OLAF and being involved in a witch hunt seeking to censure a man with the integrity to report abuse of funds without fear or favour speaks volumes of just how debased the party has become under the present corrupt leadership team.
Suffolk parliamentary hopeful suspended
By: Graham Dines
A SUFFOLK parliamentary candidate has been suspended by the UK Independence Party (UKIP) over allegations he made against an East of England Euro MP involving improper use of parliamentary allowances.
An investigation by Essex Police last month cleared MEP Jeffrey Titford, a former leader of the party, and his political adviser Stuart Gulleford of any wrongdoing, saying “no criminal conduct” had been found against the pair.
The force had been asked to investigate by John West, who had been chosen to fight Suffolk Central and Ipswich North at the next general election.
However, last night OLAF – the European Parliament’s Anti-Fraud Office – confirmed that the Essex Police decision had not ended the matter.“We have opened a file and we are taking steps to gather all relevant information for an investigation,” said the spokesman.
Mr West, who lives in Wickham Market and who contested the seat at the 2005 election, was suspended this week by UKIP’s national chairman Paul Nuttall pending a final decision by the ruling national executive on December 15. In a letter, Mr Nuttall said: “You reported the former leader of the party to the police, without a shred of evidence.
“You show no remorse for your actions, even though the police have said there is no case to answer and you now openly claim that the same individual is under investigation by OLAF, also without foundation.
“I am also informing you that there have been a number of serious complains made against you, which have now been passed on to the party secretary. I hope you understand that I cannot allow this situation to continue.”
Mr Nuttall, who accused Mr West of bringing UKIP into disrepute, added:
“This is particularly hard for me as I have always found you to be hard-working and extremely likable.”
The Suffolk Coastal constituency party has also suspended his membership. Mr West fell out with the regional party earlier this year after failing to be given a winnable position on the UKIP East of England regional list for the European parliamentary elections next June.
He is now lodged a claim with Ipswich County Court demanding that a £500 deposit he paid should be returned.Last night Mr West, who works for the county council’s libraries service, said: “I was made aware of alleged irregularities and passed them on to the police. I have no regrets about my action.”
