Beautiful time

Hi. Is it too difficult to reply from which Russian province do you come from? And maybe shed a light how did you meet London Paul Wiffen and other senior officials? Are you close to Anna Chapman and Ekaterina Paderina?

MI5 probe links between Russian spy at centre of American espionage ring and mysterious Zimbabwean businessman

Links between the alleged spy Anna Chapman and a controversial Zimbabwean businessman are being investigated by MI5.

The Russian redhead at the centre of the American espionage probe worked with multi-millionaire Ken Sharpe for three years at a British registered company based in the London flat she shared with her then husband, Alex.

Mr Chapman revealed yesterday that an MI5 agent who called herself ‘Clare’ spent much of a five-hour interrogation last week asking him about his ex-wife’s relationship with Russian-speaking Mr Sharpe.

Anna Chapman

Accused: The semi-naked picture of Anna Chapman taken by her ex-husband Alex on their honeymoon in Zimbabwe in 2002

During her time with the company, Southern Union, 28-year-old Ms Chapman moved millions of pounds between Zimbabwe and the UK, raising questions over whether the cash may have been laundered for the purposes of espionage.

The MI5 agent also quizzed Mr Chapman, 30, about Mr Sharpe’s close relationship with Ms Chapman’s father, Vasily Kushchenko, a high-ranking Russian diplomat who was accused last week of involvement with his country’s secret services, formerly known as the KGB.

According to Mr Chapman, it was Mr Kushchenko who first introduced his ex-wife to Mr Sharpe, 38, whose businesses include property development and a plant exporting vodka bottles to Russia.

Mr Sharpe is a fluent Russian speaker who lives in his native Zimbabwe with Russian wife Joanna, a former bellydancer.

Mr Chapman claims that his wife and Mr Sharpe, who is understood to be linked to tyrant Robert Mugabe’s regime, set up Southern Union, which has charitable status, to enable Zimbabwean expats to send money home at competitive exchange rates.

According to Mr Chapman, the money was deposited in an HSBC account in London then distributed through a maze of international bank accounts and front companies, to avoid scrutiny by Zimbabwean authorities, before being distributed by Mr Sharpe.

Alex Chapman

Interrogation: Alex Chapman, Anna’s ex-husband

Mr Chapman was made a director of the company but was asked to leave just one month after he split from his wife in 2005.

He said his interview with the MI5 agent on Monday had covered his ‘life with Anna’ but that the conversation had repeatedly returned to her father and, in particular, Mr Sharpe.

He said: ‘I had just put the phone down on my father, who had told me the news about Anna, when I received a call.

‘A woman said, “This is Clare from the security services. You are probably aware by now that your ex-wife is being accused of espionage.” I said I had just been told about it.

‘She said she was coming to see me and that she wanted a detailed report about Anna and her father. She wanted to know the workings of Southern Union and all about Ken Sharpe.

‘She asked if there were any strangely large amounts of money going through the company. She wanted to know where Ken was from and what he did.’

Mr Chapman added: ‘I told the agent that the only thing I found weird about Anna’s father was that he could split himself into two different people. In one moment he was business, business and next moment he was saying, “Let’s go fishing.” ’

During the interview, which took place in a conference room at the Milford Hall Hotel in Salisbury, Wiltshire, the agent suggested that his former wife may have been persuaded by her father to work in espionage.

Mr Chapman, a former public schoolboy from Bournemouth, said: ‘Clare asked whether Anna being held by the FBI and charged with spying came as a shock to me, and I said, “Yes.”

‘Then she said that in their view Anna’s father was a rather shady character. She gave me the impression that she believed Anna had got caught up in something but didn’t really understand how serious it was.

‘She said she would have been lured by the glamour and the glitz and that she thought she was doing her country a service.’

Mr Chapman claimed he spoke on the phone on Friday to his ex-wife in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, where she is held.

He said that he got through to her Russian mobile phone just hours after she was denied bail on charges of conspiring to act as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The crime carries a potential penalty of five years in prison.

He said: ‘I rang her because I was extremely worried about her. She answered and I immediately recognised her voice although she sounded utterly drained. She initially claimed she was her sister, Katya.

‘She just said, “So much has happened. I am not surprised about everything that is happening in England. It is happening everywhere. But I would prefer you not to speak to people about me for a couple of weeks.”

‘I said that I was sorry about her father’s name being linked to the KGB and she kept on saying, “Don’t worry, don’t worry.” ’

Ms Chapman’s lawyer Robert Baum yesterday told a bail hearing she was ‘very frightened’ by jail and had been embarrassed by details of her private life emerging in recent days, including stories of her love of the high life.

But Mr Baum told the court: ‘The truth is she is probably no different from your typical single 28-year-old woman in New York City. She runs a successful business, goes out at night. She dates men, enjoys a social life.’

However, concerns have been raised within the British secret service that Ms Chapman may have been involved in espionage during her five-year stay in the UK, in which time she became a British citizen.

Anna and Alex Chapman

Young love: Alex and Anna Chapman at their family home near Fordingbridge in 2002

MI5’s investigation appears to be focusing on the network of contacts around her father and Mr Sharpe.

Mr Sharpe, who is said to have been expelled as child from his country’s top private school Peterhouse, is understood to be linked to Mr Mugabe and his Zanu PF party.

Mr Chapman met his ex-wife, born Anna Kushchenko, at a rave in London in 2001 when she was on a break from studying for an economics degree at Moscow University.

She was wearing ‘a stunning white dress and pair of red high heels’, he said, and that night he stole her away from her travelling partner and boyfriend. Within eight months they had married at a register office in Moscow.

They honeymooned in Zimbabwe in March 2002 – and Mr Chapman took a picture of his new wife lying half-naked on their hotel bed.

He said: ‘We were just having a bit of fun. We were in love.’ But he admits that early in their relationship there were signs that there was much more to Anna and her father.

He recalled: ‘We were going to a nightclub in Moscow, but the doormen were not letting us in. All of a sudden a guy got out of a Diablo [Lamborghini] car, had a word with the people on the door and we were just whisked through.

‘They almost bowed to us – it was incredible. Apparently this guy was some Persian Prince. I didn’t understand how well connected she seemed to be.’

After six months in Moscow, the couple returned to London where they worked for Southern Union from their flat in Stoke Newington.

Mr Chapman said: ‘Mr Sharpe would call us all the time. He would say you need to move this amount of money from this bank account to that bank account.’

But as Ms Chapman sought the material comfort that her husband could not provide, their relationship became strained and they split up in 2005.

A month later, Mr Sharpe told Mr Chapman that Southern Union was closing. Following her time at Southern Union, Ms Chapman worked for private jet lease company Netjets, hedge fund Navigator Assets and as a business manager at the Uxbridge and Ealing Broadway branches of Barclays bank.

Mr Chapman said: ‘When Anna left Southern Union she became very business orientated. She wanted to move to Mayfair and go to posh clubs. When she wanted something, she went and got it.’

Ms Chapman moved to America in 2008 to set up an internet property company. Mr Chapman said: ‘That was the most surprising thing, this sudden move to America and getting her green card so quickly.

‘She said the UK was far too relaxed, in as much as that politicians say things and it never gets done.

‘In Russia, they say things and it gets done. But she liked everything about the English culture – Benny Hill, James Bond and Harry Potter. She would send Benny Hill on to her father in Zimbabwe. He roared with laughter at it.’

Yesterday Mr Sharpe said: ‘I have not heard from MI5. Southern Union in the UK was not my company.’

Southern Union is still registered as an active company at Companies House.

Its sole current director is Steven Sugden, who lives in Dublin. Mr Sugden has denied any involvement with the company and said he had been listed as a director without his knowledge.

Internet firm was propped up by $1m from Russian state

The internet company run by Anna Chapman, which the FBI is understood to be investigating as a smokescreen for her alleged spying, was propped up by a $1million cash injection from the Russian state.

Ms Chapman founded her international property venture following her divorce from Briton Alex Chapman in 2006.

She boasted that the business made her a millionairess and financed her lavish lifestyle in New York.

Anna Chapman

Accused: A recent picture of Anna Chapman in the US

Mr Chapman, who kept in touch with his ex-wife after their divorce, said last week he was puzzled about how she had kept the struggling company afloat.

He said: ‘She moved over there to set up her internet property firm and it always seemed to be in the red, but it took off suddenly in 2009 and she said she was employing 50 people.

‘I couldn’t understand how she could pay them. At some point someone had pumped a lot of money into it.’

However, in statements to Russian business journalists that have been obtained by The Mail on Sunday, she boasts she received a cash boost estimated to be $1million (about £657,000) from Russian backers supported by the Russian state.

Ms Chapman, who confided to her former husband that her father was a ‘high-ranking’ officer in the Russian security forces, had told journalists that she had launched the ambitious venture in Russia by pawning her jewellery.

Eight months later, she had used up her capital and, after being met with rejections from private investors, faced bankruptcy.

‘Everybody I asked for money said no. All of them did, laughing at me,’ she said.

Finally, in 2008, she received the injection of money with the help of Russia’s Department of Support for Small Business and Agency for Developing Innovative Business.

Her website domdot.ru can still be accessed on the internet.

She told Moscow-based journalists  that her investors were her ‘business angels’ – insisting the Kremlin wanted nothing in return for its generosity.

But US investigators are believed to be interested in whether her alleged paymasters could have used the business to provide an elaborate cover for her alleged spying.

A US intelligence source said last night: ‘If Anna indeed is a deepcover agent, it was a brilliant stroke.

‘Her role apparently was to infiltrate the US Establishment by posing as a fabulously rich, self-made woman with a wild streak –  kind of a honeytrap for the dotcom age.

‘If that is the case, it may be that the company served as a pipeline for Moscow Central to continue generating a cashflow to finance her lifestyle that couldn’t be traced.’

Guest at lavish party with Royal connection

Anna Chapman attended a lavish London party held by a Russian who is close to his country’s embassy and has links to Britain’s Royal Family.

Guests gathered on a ship moored in the Thames in 2007 to celebrate Victory Day, the Russian equivalent of VE Day.

Those invited included prominent City financiers, including representatives of Barclays bank where Anna worked.

Entrepreneur Eugene Kasevin, a leading figure in the Anglo-Russian community, organised the event which is held annually and has been attended by ambassadors, businessmen and Prince Michael of Kent.

Mr Kasevin, 40, said he recalled Ms Chapman as a quiet individual. ‘I remember her look, her hair. But that’s it,’ he said from his home in Moscow.

‘She faded into the background. She was very timid.’ Allegations that she was a spy struck him as ‘a little unlikely’.

However, another guest at the party, politician Paul Wiffen, who now works for UKIP, said: ‘She was working the room. She was the sort of girl you noticed.

‘She asked me who I was and what I did as if sniffing around for who I knew.’

MERCHANT, Piers 21-Sept-2009 – IN MEMORIAM

Posted by Greg Lance - Watkins (Greg_L-W) on 21/09/2018

21-Sept IN MEMORIAM Piers MERCHANT

———————————————–

Piers Merchant

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Piers Rolf Garfield Merchant
(born: 2 January 1951) & (died: 21 September 2009)
aged 58

Piers Merchant was a politician in the United Kingdom.
He was Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Beckenham, but resigned in October 1997.

Before he became an MP he was a journalist and marketing officer.

Merchant was educated at Nottingham High School and the University of Durham where he was Senior Man of University College’s JCR. He was first elected to the House of Commons at the 1983 general election, for the Newcastle Central constituency, he lost the seat at the June 1987 general election. He stood for Beckenham at the 1992 general election and won.

MPs cannot technically resign; instead he took the offices of Steward of the Manor of Northstead, which automatically led to his disqualification.

In the 2004 European Parliament election, Merchant stood for the UK Independence Party in the North East England constituency, at the top of their party list. He was not elected.

Piers Merchant worked for some years, in various capacities, for UKIP, having been at one time political advisor to Roger Knapman the UKIP leader during their sucessful 2004 election and also for a short time acted as UKIP General Secretary until a suitable individual could be found full time.

In 2005, Merchant relocated to Great Torrington in North Devon. Merchant is also a member of Mensa.

It is with regret that I inform you that in early July 2009 Piers was diagnosed as having advanced prostate cancer leading to multi site metastatic cancer, the prognosis being bleak. His wife Helen supported by their two children is with him at this time. (07-Jul-09)

It is with regret that I inform you that on 21-Sep-2009 Piers Merchant died after a short terminal illness. The cause of death was multi site metastatic prostate cancer.

Piers Merchant leaves his wife Helen and their daughter and a teenage son. Piers had faced his illness with courage, supported by his family, and leaves many friends and colleagues, Piers’ brother will find it particularly hard as their Mother had died only a matter of a few months ago after a brief terminal illness, though at a much more acceptable age.

The EUroRealist movement has lost an indefatiguable campaigner and a well informed advocate, whose contribution in UKIP has been immense. He will be remembered with affection by his many colleagues in UKIP and before that from his days as a Conservative MP and before.

It is sad that his colleagues in UKIP did so little to defend his name when he was lied about and defamed by Mark Croucher, Douglas Denny and others who claimed he had betrayed the party by being ‘Junius’ when clearly he was not nor ever wrote as part of that team as proven when he died. There were even lies put forward that he had tampered with UKIP web site to send copies of eMails to him for publication on Junius.

This was clearly all too typical of the dishonesty of UKIP’s leadership team and its odious claque of self serving low lifes.

Not ONE of UKIP’s leaders or followers spoke out in his defence, either before or after his demise!

My personal condolences to their children Alethea and Rolf and to his widow Helen Merchant (nee Burrlock) whom he married in 1977. Helen loyally stood by Piers throughout the visicitudes of a colourfull and productive life, whilst maintaining a high powered career in her own right.

Much of Piers’ life was spent in service to British liberty and democracy, though he will be remembered by many for his colourfull private life – a life too soon lost!

Further details of his life can be found if you CLICK HERE:

Piers Merchant

Piers Merchant, who has died aged 58, was a Conservative MP catapulted out of relative obscurity by being photographed locked in a passionate embrace with a blonde “hostess” at the height of the 1997 general election campaign.

The campaign had up until that point been dominated by a succession of stories about Tory financial and sexual “sleaze”. But the photograph, taken in broad daylight in a park in the married MP’s Beckenham constituency, represented a nadir in the party’s fortunes.

The Sun, which had switched allegiance from the Conservatives to Labour just days earlier, published the photograph on its front page and accused Merchant of indulging in “an open-air sex romp”.

It identified the object of his affections as being one Anna Cox, a 17-year-old who had worked at the Casa Rosa nightclub in Soho in the euphemistically-named “hostess” business. The newspaper accused Merchant of having an affair with Cox and wrote a trenchant leader column demanding that he be “publicly horsewhipped”.

“I’m not old enough to vote – but I’m old enough to know when I’ve been used,” the paper quoted her as saying.

The story dominated the election for five days. The errant MP was dubbed “sleaze Merchant” and castigated for epitomising everything that was wrong with the rapacious Conservative Party under John Major.

His parliamentary colleagues, among whom he was almost universally well-respected, privately wondered how he could have been so stupid. The Tory high command publicly called on him to “consider his position”.

The hapless Merchant protested his innocence and told anyone who would listen that he had been set up. He insisted that the tryst had lasted for less than two minutes and that he had met Cox on no more than a handful of previous occasions. One of his few public supporters was his wife Helen, who conceded that her husband had been a “bloody fool” but said that she still loved him regardless.

Despite the uproar, Merchant held Beckenham with a respectable majority at an election in which the Tory party suffered its worst defeat since 1832. The matter might have ended there. But Merchant, determined to get to the bottom of the episode, decided that the only way to find out the truth was to befriend Cox.

He successfully achieved this by employing her as a researcher to work on a book he was writing about parliamentary sex scandals. Cox revealed, he said, that she had been recruited straight out of Soho to act as a “honey trap” by The Sun. The paper was apparently anxious to stitch up some Tory MPs as an act of fealty to its new political overlords in the Labour Party.

As chance would have it, The Sun‘s deputy news editor, Neil Wallis, was an old rival of Merchant’s from their days spent working on local newspapers in the North East. Cox had been speculatively sent along to a Tory meeting to get close to Merchant, just in case his eye for an attractive young girl got the better of his judgment.

It did. After asking if she could accompany him around the constituency as he delivered his election material, Cox then suggested they take a detour through a local park. The couple sat on a bench where, Merchant claimed, Cox made a pass at him. Unbeknown to the MP, a photographer from The Sun was concealed in a nearby ditch.

The majority of Merchant’s friends regarded his story as being so wildly improbable as to be almost certainly true. Years later, Merchant told friends, it was confirmed by Stuart Higgins, who had been editor of The Sun at the time of the exposé.

But the tale had another twist. By the time Merchant had extracted the information from Cox, the pair had embarked on an affair. Merchant took Cox to the Tory conference in Blackpool that year, and afterwards for a two-night break in York at a discreet flat owned by his former researcher, Anthony Gilberthorpe. In fact, Merchant was about to fall victim to another tabloid sting. Gilberthorpe had been paid £25,000 by the Sunday Mirror, whose journalists had wired the flat with concealed video recorders to capture the couple’s cavortings.

After the Mirror published, the ever-loyal Helen Merchant made a toe-curling appearance on the doorstep of the family home with Merchant and Cox. The wronged wife insisted that Anna was a family friend with whom she was happy for her husband to spend his nights.

Merchant quit as an MP 48 hours later by applying to become steward of the Manor of Northstead. Though he was no longer in public life, the Sunday Mirror ran photographs from his bedroom “romp” with Cox on its front page for two further weeks. Years later, Merchant wryly remarked that not even the death of the Queen Mother had merited three consecutive front pages in the paper.

Piers Rolf Garfield Merchant was born on January 2 1951, the son of a schoolmaster. After leaving Durham University in 1973, his first job was as a reporter on the Newcastle Journal.

He contested Newcastle Central for the Tories in 1979. He stood there again in 1983 and was duly elected in the first of the Thatcher landslides. It was not natural Tory territory so it came as no surprise when he lost the seat in 1987.

He became director of public affairs at the Advertising Association. But, as a committed Thatcherite, Merchant was desperate to get back into the Commons. After being rejected by seven Tory associations, Merchant only clinched the Beckenham nomination when, in the wake of Thatcher’s political assassination by the party’s left wing, he cast notes aside and spoke from the heart.

It was during the 1992-97 parliament that his ready political skills were put to good use as PPS to Peter Lilley, the then social security secretary. After resigning his seat in 1997, Merchant went to work for the London Chamber of Commerce. When the LCC’s board announced its intention to merge with the big business organisation London First, he waged a highly effective campaign to stop it happening.

Although he was notionally part of the management team charged with driving the merger through, he utilised a series of political ploys to stretch negotiations out for two years before they finally collapsed at an acrimonious EGM.

Merchant was unfailingly good-humoured about being derided as a figure of fun by the Westminster village. He became chief executive of the United Kingdom Independence Party in 2004 and was put in charge of running its campaign in the Hartlepool by-election that year.

When the party’s star turn Robert Kilroy-Silk came to campaign in the constituency, Merchant arranged for his Jaguar to be met outside the town by a huge convoy of party and media vehicles.

The former television presenter could not have been more feted by the locals if he had been the Pope. Merchant, who had orchestrated events from beginning to end, let on to nobody that Kilroy had sent him a handwritten note the day before.

“Please do not stand within ten yards of me,” it read. “Because I’m sure you’ll understand that I do not wish to be photographed alongside you.”

Piers Merchant, who had cancer, died on September 21. He married Helen Burrluck in 1977, and is survived by her, one son and one daughter.

Hi,

UKIP’s latest flip-flop just left Tommy Robinson with his trousers round his ankles

UKIP’s latest flip-flop just left Tommy Robinson with his trousers round his ankles

On Sunday 9 September, UKIP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decided to hold a debate on letting far-right ideologue Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, aka Tommy Robinson, join the party.

Yaxley-Lennon said he wanted to join the party. UKIP leader Gerard Batten said he wanted Yaxley-Lennon to join the party. Forty-eight hours later, the NEC stuffed him.

Flip-flop

Party chair Tony McIntyre originally approved the so-called ‘Tommy Robinson motion’ on Sunday 9 September. But just two days later the party decided to block the debate on a technicality.

McIntyre said he axed the motion because only two UKIP members had proposed it, not a full branch. This is apparently in “contravention of the Party Rule Book”.

In a statement to UKIP members, McIntyre wrote:

I have made it a point during my tenure as Chairman of the Party to adhere strictly to the Party Rules, as they are the backbone of the Party.

I believe strongly in freedom of speech and would suggest that this motion is presented to the next Autumn Party Conference via the correct channels.

I take full responsibility for this error in judgement as it is mine and mine alone.

It looks like for now, UKIP’s NEC has thrown Yaxley-Lennon under the bus and dashed his hopes of joining a large political party.

Islamophobic goals

But there are still calls among the party’s ultra-right to get around McIntyre’s most recent ruling. They’ll try to argue that they put forward the proposal for Yaxley-Lennon’s membership as an ‘Emergency Motion’.

Deputy chair of UKIP’s youth wing Reece Coombes is one of those UKIP members. He seconded the proposal put forward by UKIP’s family and children spokesperson Alan Craig. Coombes often writes in defence of Yaxley-Lennon for the party’s blog Kipper Central, where he enjoys referring to himself in the third person.

According to Coombes, the party’s rulebook allows members to submit emergency motions for discussion at the party conference after the regular deadline. And individuals, not just branches, can make such proposals.

The motion’s instigator Alan Craig spoke to Coombes in Kipper Central:

It is puzzling that party chairman Tony McIntyre has cancelled the conference debate on the ‘Tommy Robinson’ motion having only just approved it on Sunday, as nothing procedurally or otherwise has changed.

Reece Coombes and I submitted the motion on 31st August (a) as individuals, and (b) significantly after the deadline for branch motions. It was plain to see on both counts, therefore, that our motion did not qualify as a normal branch motion and we did not submit it as such…

On Sunday he rightly approved the motion. He has today unapproved it. What caused him to change his mind?

Infighting reaches fever-pitch

The answer is UKIP infighting.

After Craig announced he’d submitted the motion to the NEC on September 6, an unnamed UKIP spokesperson quickly called the statement “sensationalist fake news” and said there was no chance of it passing. Then the NEC passed it. And then redacted it.

In fact, several senior UKIP members, including former leader Nigel Farage, have raised concerns over bringing Yaxley-Lennon into the party, with NEC member Ben Walker saying he would have to “consider [his] position”. UKIP’s Bristol branch went so far as to state that it would disband if the party accepted the Islamophobe.

But the main reason for keeping Yaxley-Lennon at arms’ length isn’t about morality. It has more to do with tactics and shoring up the Eurosceptic vote.

Shoring up the Brexit vote

In an LBC segment on September 10, Farage highlighted a recent statement made by former Brexit minister Steve Baker. Apparently, some 80 Tory MPs could vote down Theresa May’s Chequers plan in parliament, with Baker predicting a “catastrophic split” amongst the Conservatives.

Pointing to infighting within Labour, Farage said that instead of focusing on Yaxley-Lennon’s membership, UKIP should be trying to lure dissatisfied Brexit voters back to the party:

On Brexit, the one party that should be benefitting hugely from this, should be UKIP.

It should be picking up Tory voters and Labour voters.

But instead, they are going to have a debate as to whether Tommy Robinson should be allowed to join UKIP.

I think UKIP are missing a bit of a trick here. There are millions of very unhappy Euro-sceptic voters out there in both parties!

Not ‘if’ but ‘when’

The ongoing saga of UKIP’s flip-flop on Yaxley-Lennon is leading to some spectacular self-owns. And for many, it will be a delight to see the allies of the English Defence League founder damage his reputation.

It looks like UKIP has decided – in the short-term – to drop populist Islamophobia and shore up the anti-immigration Brexit vote. This may mean that UKIP ‘moderates’ have put the brakes on the party’s transformation into a National Front for the 21st Century.

But don’t get complacent. While it might make tactical sense for UKIP to focus on Brexit right now, Gerard Batten and his ultra-right allies are still in charge of the party.

And if that remains the case, Yaxley-Lennon’s membership in UKIP is not so much a matter of ‘if’, but a question of ‘when’. And that should worry us all.

Hi,

UKIP AM Caroline Jones quits party over ‘far-right move’

JONES AM, Caroline 01

A former leader of the UKIP group in the Welsh Assembly has resigned from the party.

Caroline Jones claimed UKIP leader Gerard Batten was alienating his members by moving the party to the far right.

The AM for South Wales West, who will now sit as an independent, said UKIP was taking “a direction that I’m not comfortable with”.

But Mr Batten said her statement was “politically correct twaddle”.

Mrs Jones outsted Neil Hamilton as leader of UKIP in the assembly in May and served until she lost a leadership election to Gareth Bennett in August.

Her resignation means the UKIP group has four AMs left from the seven elected to the Senedd in 2016.

Mrs Jones said she does not “feel welcome in the assembly group” and has not been “treated equally or as favourably” as Mr Bennett or Neil Hamilton, the first UKIP group leader.

She alleged a leadership election was called to get her out of the job, and questioned whether the way it was held adhered to the party’s constitution.

Gerard Batten has taken the party in “a direction I’m not comfortable with”, Caroline Jones said

Mrs Jones told BBC Wales Mr Batten – who has been highly critical of Islam – was changing the party “to a more far-right position, which a lot of the long-standing members are finding quite unfavourable, including myself”.

“I never joined the party to be part of a far-right organisation – I joined the party because I wanted to come out of the European Union,” she said.

“Gerard Batten should listen to all sides and try to mediate and bring people together, as opposed to alienating them.

“He’s brought a lot of views into UKIP which people, the more moderate members, of the party have asked him to tone down.”

‘Shambolic election’

Mrs Jones said the leadership election was “shambolic from beginning to end”, citing rule changes which meant more people were able to vote than expected.

She alleged she had been subject of “misogyny”, claiming examples of a meeting where she was allegedly told to “shut up”, one where she had a pair of glasses thrown at her, and another where she was told to stop taking minutes.

Mrs Jones said: “I never liked the way that certain members in the assembly conducted themselves in their attitude towards female members.”

Mr Batten was appointed leader earlier this year, after former UKIP leader Henry Bolton was sacked.

The MEP said: “I have brought the party back from financial meltdown, raised funds, raised membership numbers, and raised UKIP in the polls. Ms Jones has contributed nothing that I am aware of.”

He added: “Her statement is politically correct twaddle to disguise the fact that Mrs Jones is politically ineffective. I wish her well languishing in the outer realms of irrelevance.”

UKIP assembly group leader Gareth Bennett said he was “not totally surprised” by Mrs Jones’s exit and suggested people in the party who do not agree with its direction should “get off the train and then make it easier for the group to operate”.

He said UKIP was not moving to the far right but said not everyone in the party agreed with Mr Batten’s direction.

Mr Bennett denied the misogyny accusations – he confirmed that Caroline Jones had been told to “shut up” at a group meeting but said it was not related to her gender.

“There was poor behaviour from probably two or three people in that room at that meeting,” he said.

“I’m supremely confident that the group will eventually cohere.”

Neil Hamilton has called on Mrs Jones to resign her regional list seat and allow another UKIP member to become an AM, but she told BBC Radio Wales that she would not stand down.

Under the regional list system used to elect 20 of the 60 assembly members, voters choose a party rather than a specific candidate.

When a regional AM resigns, they are usually succeeded by the person who was next on the list for their party at the previous assembly election in that region.

I hear rumours from a usually well informed insider that Michelle Brown, currently Ukip AM for North Wales is likely to quit representing them shortly and represent her own views as an Independent.

Although Gareth Bennett is expected to run for leadership of the National Party at the next Ukip Leadership election, but he may find a snag in his plan as it is likely that the hapless Gerard Batten may well step down and not seek re-election after the crass ineptitude of his period standing in as leader nationally.

If Batten does cut and run it is expected he will back Mike Hookem for the leadership, well the field is staggeringly poor as anyone who has followed Ukip will appreciate – it is clear there is not a single individual with the relevant experience or visible qualities needed.

Hi,

Bristol UKIP will disband if Tommy Robinson joins party

The Bristol group says his membership will move the party ‘dangerously more far right’

The Bristol group claim the party would move “dangerously more far right” if the anti-Islam campaigner joins and could open the door to “extremists”.

Mr Robinson founded the far-right English Defence League (EDL) party in 2009 and has spoken at many anti-Islam events. He has denied holding racist or anti-semitic views.

The 35-year-old – who was released from prison last month after serving time for contempt of court – has indicated he would like to join UKIP, but party rules state former EDL and British National Party members cannot be accepted.

Speaking to the party’s National Executive Committee on Sunday (September, 9), Mr Robinson said the “British working class will be electrified” if he is allowed to join UKIP.

The decision on whether to accept Mr Robinson’s application will be made at the upcoming UKIP conference in Birmingham at the end of the month.

However, the Bristol branch say it is against welcoming the activist in to the party.

“Over the past few years UKIP has stringently sought to remove those whose views were felt to be incongruous with the political aims and objectives of UKIP in terms of Britain’s association with Europe,” a UKIP Bristol spokesperson said.

“While we fully appreciate and respect the strengths of Tommy Robinson in his role as a campaigner, this should in no way be interpreted as an endorsement of his stance on anti-Islamification, which, in respect of UKIP Bristol members is regarded as Mr Robinson weaponising against the majority of Muslims and therefore wholly disproportionate and misleading.

“Further to this our view is that should Mr Robinson be allowed to join UKIP, his membership will be seen as an open door for extremists who were previously members to rejoin, and other supporters of Mr Robinson who share his beliefs to follow.”

While it is thought unlikely that party members will vote to allow Mr Robinson membership at the annual conference, the Bristol branch says it will disband if he is permitted to enter.

However, Mr Robinson appears to have the support from UKIP’s leader, Gerard Batten, who has likened him to Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

The Bristol branch say Mr Batten’s views have called his leadership in to question.

“We now consider Gerard Batten’s continued leadership of the party as wholly questionable in respect of him supporting Mr Robinson, as much as the strong possibility of the party leaning dangerously more far right than we are comfortable with should Mr Robinson’s membership of the party be endorsed,” the Bristol spokesperson said.

“To further underline Bristol UKIP’s absolute and total position on this matter, should Mr Robinson’s membership of the party be accepted then we will resign from UKIP with immediate effect and the branch will be disbanded.”
