The date of St George’s Day comes from the church calendars. In Anglican and Catholic calendars, when 23 April falls too close to Easter, St George’s Day is moved.
In 2011, for example, 23 April will be Holy Saturday and St George’s Day is transferred to Monday 2 May.
This of course is a nonsense as 23rd. April commemorates the day of St. George’s death in 303 AD – not a date that shifts around with the vagaries of a church calendar. The 23rd. April falls on the 23rd. April every year!
That the mythology and tradition of St. George may well be arbitrary in its origins hardly makes it arbitrary in a precise calendar merely as there is confusion as to a set date for Easter!
