Two birds on a perch…: The UKIP MEP ballot

.
Published on 10 October 2013 by

This week saw the release of UKIP’s list of candidates for the 2014 European elections. For a party widely expected to top the poll next year, this is an important stage in their management of that election.

It was also an important event, because the party had made a conscious effort to change its mechanism for selecting candidates this time around. Instead of limiting votes to their region, members were allowed to vote on a national list of 78 candidates. The intention was to stop locally influential individuals having as much impact on rankings, and so reassert the party leadership’s position: several people were not reselected at this stage. It also came on the back of a series of weak selection procedures resulting in UKIP candidates or elected individuals having brief moments of fame in the media for unsavoury actions or comments. For a party that has grown rapidly, while still operating on a metaphorical shoestring, and with far-right elements still probing to see if they can use UKIP as an intermediary, this represents a considerable danger.

Members were given ten votes, with a preferential weighting (i.e. the first preference counts for more than the second, and so on), with the Electoral Reform Society collecting the results. According to the information circulated by one branch, the results then went to the party’s chairman, Steven Crowther, and then the NEC to consider “complaints, screening/vetting and ratification”.

Screening certainly took place, following Godfrey Bloom’s removal of the whip last month: when and whether he will return to the party fold is not clear, but unless one of the new batch of MEPs steps aside for him, it doesn’t look likely to be in that capacity. It’s also worth noting that Anne Murgatoyd appears on the final list, despite not being part of the original selection.

As for complaints, I’m not aware of any, but certainly the pre-selection of the 78 caused much consternation, especially since the process appeared to have been designed by key figures at very short notice and without wide consultation.

With the exception of the Northern Ireland candidate, who had already been selected unopposed in the first phase, the remaining candidates contested 64 slots.  This is in itself an interesting point, given that there are 73 seats available and UKIP’s traditional approach has been to field a full slate of candidates. While they have this in England and Wales, there was only one Northern Irish candidate (for 3 seats), reflecting both the differing party systems and the continuing weakness of UKIP beyond England. Scotland will have candidates announced separately.

The chart below shows the number of votes each successful candidate received, as listed on the UKIP website:

The numbers indicate the candidate’s place on their regional list (so Jonathan Arnott topped the North East list with just under 10,000 votes).

Several observations are worth making here.

Firstly, public profile matters. Nigel Farage’s votes far exceed those of any other candidate, with the exception of Deputy Leader, Paul Nuttall.  Likewise, all the 6 current MEPs  on the list are all in the top 9 spots. The profile ofExpress political editor Patrick O’Flynn and Eastleigh candidate Diane James also saw them do well.

Second, the parachuting of candidates has been more limited than some had thought. Patrick O’Flynn aside, conspicuously absent is Deputy Chairman, Neil Hamilton, suggesting that the ‘Kilroy’ strategy of 2004 is not to be repeated. This would make sense in the context of UKIP having already got a media profile – centred on Farage – and not wanting to provide an alternative focus for that.

Third, voting was conducted by approximately 31,000 members, according the UKIP’s Press Office, Gawain Towler. I note this solely for the reason that this was roughly the membership claimed in May, after the local elections, implying that the big growth spurt then was of a limited duration.

The final note is that this process has produced much unhappiness, both within the party and for others in the eurosceptic movement. As I discussed last week, the progressive collapse of the UKIP group in the EP has only been hastened by this process.  Consider that of the original list produced for England and Wales, only 4 individuals did not get through (one of whom was the self-removing Bloom), highlighting the strong gate-keeping role that the central party has played this time.

As UKIP looks to trying to move on from being a party of protest, it has to convey its ability to exercise the powers given to it in a responsible way. Whether this new method of choosing candidates – many of whom are likely to become MEPs, and the dominant party within a increasingly consequential EP grouping – remains to be seen.

UKIP’s Partners Want New EU Legislation:
To Send Unwanted People To Us!

Everybody’s favourite fascists, & UKIP’s partners in the European Parliament, Lega Nord, have come up with a great idea.

Lorenzo Fontana, one of their MEPs, is calling on the European Commission to produce legislation to “ensure an equal distribution among the 28 member states of immigrants arriving at the coasts of southern Europe and across the EU border with Turkey, in accordance with the principle of solidarity and burden sharing”.

Basically, this means passing immigrants and refugees our way.

Or to paraphrase the famous inscription on the Statue of Liberty:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free;
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless,
Tempest-tossed to me,

And we will send them all to Kent.

So, we have new EU legislation, the passing on of unwanted human beings, and recognition of the ‘solidarity’ of the EU.

Nice company Nigel Farage keeps.

The dark heart
of UKIP

Being Nigel Farage has got to be fun. No pressure to produce proper policies, no real scrutiny of you, your colleagues or your members, a decent whack plus sensational expenses and a media that sit and wait for  you to utter something mildly interesting. Usually in a pub. With  a pint of beer in your hand.Truly, if Carlsberg did party leadership…

Two decades after he launched himself and his party onto the British public (oh no – bright, new bringer of change he is not) Nigel Farage must be feeling pretty good about life. Sitting at home, swirling a decent red (beer for the cameras only, I’d wager) he must shake his head in wonder at how things are shaping up for him and the UK Independence Party… and how easily the three main parties fell headlong into his trap.

How he must have laughed when told that a “senior Tory” had branded grass-root Conservatives “swivel-eyed loons”. During my days at Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ) countless negative stories were attributed to “senior Tories” when it turned out to be someone distinctly junior or even barely Tory. But just as on those occasions the sourcing of this story didn’t matter, the damage was done.

Farage boasted that traffic to the party’s website immediately trebled, but from such a low base that wasn’t difficult to achieve. No, more valuable was the sea change in media coverage. That one phrase completed UKIP’s transformation from political curiosity to fearless underdog.

It also reopened the wound inflicted in 2006 when David Cameron described UKIP members as “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists, mostly”, an arguably accurate but, as it turns out, rather rash statement of strategic intent.

UKIP has a soft underbelly. It is, in a word, inauthentic. It is a party that claims to be anti-Westminster but secretly longs to be part of the club

In truth, the Conservative Party’s approach to UKIP has been misplaced for years and easily predates David’s leadership. Since UKIP’s birth in 1993 the Tories have at various times been dismissive, arrogant and downright rude about it. But those at CCHQ were not so cocky as to be blind to their challenge. Indeed a not insignificant amount of campaigning cash has been spent collecting data and holding focus groups designed to accurately identify the UKIP threat.

Unfortunately, as is often the case in politics, that work was rendered useless by the overriding instincts of the politicians. Fast-forward to Ken Clarke – one of this country’s most experienced, intelligent and able politicians – describing UKIP as “clowns with no positive policies” before this year’s local elections. Again, Clarke’s analysis is almost certainly correct but I’m sure he’d now agree the party’s campaigning efforts would have been better served if he’d shared his outburst with the bathroom mirror rather than the national media.

And so, almost by accident, the Conservative senior ranks have allowed their private thoughts to become fixed party policy. And that’s just what Farage was banking on.

As a result UKIP has become a club for disgruntled, invariably older Tories fed up with the leadership’s attitude mostly, although not entirely, towards Europe. More dangerously it allowed the party to present itself as the natural home for anyone fed up with mainstream politics and more specifically mainstream politicians. And that’s a thriving demographic.

This trend has been encouraged by the right-leaning media which, post Leveson, is more than happy to give the PM a bit of a slap by gifting Farage more column inches than he deserves.

UKIP’s strategy going forward is now clear. It wants coverage but not scrutiny. It wants to stay out of complex policy debate and stick to its superficially appealing but utterly unrealistic pledges, stepping in with a friendly “we’re over here” wave every time the “Westminster elite” inevitably screw up by doing/saying something that distances it yet further from the electorate.

For now this is a logical approach and one that’s reaping tangible benefits. UKIP has over 30,000 members – up a remarkable 3,500 since March and dangerously close to the Liberal Democrats’ reported 42,500 (and falling fast) membership. In this year’s local elections the party registered the best results outside of the big three since the Second World War.

More worryingly for David Cameron, around 60 per cent of those who have voted or say they might vote UKIP voted Conservative in 2010. Fully three quarters of a group of Tory members polled by YouGov said they were tempted – however slightly – to vote UKIP, many because they felt disrespected by the Tory leadership.

But David isn’t the only leader to be suffering a UKIP headache. Labour heartlands are threatened too and were the target of a recent UKIP party political broadcast. UKIP’s popularity is not limited to the south and southeast by any measure. Plenty of centrist or even right-leaning Labourites – of the type Margaret Thatcher was able to attract – like UKIP’s stronger immigration message. UKIP has finished in the top three in six parliamentary by-elections that have been held in Labourcontrolled seats since 2011 and Miliband’s more nuanced positioning on immigration is all about this Farage threat.

Nick Clegg has also tried to see off any incursion into his Lib Dem base but unfortunately wrecked a useful one-liner (I suspect written by his smart comms team) “UKIP is the party for a better yesterday” by attacking its supporters – not candidates – for failing to be sufficiently “modern”.

But for the Tories at least UKIP has a soft underbelly, a vulnerability that if effectively prodded and probed, might just reduce its threat to a less electorally threatening percentage.

UKIP is the very embodiment of that thing that causes brands to fail and stars to fade. It is, in a word, inauthentic.

A party that claims to be anti-sleaze but is riddled with the same problems of vanity and self-interest that inflict all the major parties… and before any real power has been secured or scrutiny applied.

A party of regular, nice guys – just like Nigel Farage – which has to email urgent warning letters to its membership in the hours after a British terrorist attack so as not to find itself accidentally inciting extremist views.

A party that claims to be anti-Westminster but secretly longs – and I mean longs – to be part of the club.

A party that claims to be for everyone but with leading female members who have branded it sexist. A party whose press office described former Tory chairwoman Sayeeda Warsi – the first Muslim woman to serve in the Cabinet – as a “bitch”, which was both nasty and, in my experience of working with her, utterly untrue.

And a party whose leader spits fury at tax evaders as “the common enemy” while failing to mention his own Isle of Man trust fund (The Farage Family Education Trust, no less) designed to help his family avoid inheritance tax.

Now you may argue that similar claims could be levelled at all the other parties and you may be right. The difference is that these organisations are not, at least as their USP, claiming to completely reinvent the political wheel. They use the currency of modern politics too loosely, of course: voters have heard the slogan “change” so frequently in the past ten years that they’re deaf to the word. But revolution is not their promise and the wholesale dismantling of the Westminster system is not their aim.

In contrast, UKIP’s very reason for being is to be genuinely different, and if it fails on that pledge then it simply becomes a less competent, less savoury and, from an economic point of view, less numerate alternative.

And let’s be clear: this is not a party suffering from organisational or philosophical teething problems. This is not a story of the under-funded minnow struggling against the all-powerful bigger fish.

UKIP is a party that’s been around for two decades, with a leader who has repeatedly tried and failed to get himself elected to the House of Commons. It’s a party well funded by donors who can afford to stick two fingers up at the Tories for a bit of rebellious fun and as revenge against a leader who refused to do their anti-European bidding. UKIP is properly old school. And not in a nice way.

But how to get to this underbelly?

First, UKIP’s power to motivate must be better understood and accepted. As Matthew d’Ancona, of this parish, says, “UKIP is the tiny figure in a blazer waving a fist at the -unstoppable cyber-titan of modernity.” My other favourite columnist, Matthew Parris, says it is a party that “distorts and simplifies the world”.

They’re both spot on but UKIP also has a Dad’s Army-like appeal, with supporters of a not entirely dissimilar average age. Just like Corporal Jones and co they are a tough bunch of buggers who relish the idea of a scrap.

Second, UKIP’s leader must be taken more seriously. We all know a Nigel Farage. Used to be a bit of a noise in the city, likes a drink, a decent suit (if slightly stuck in a “Michael Douglas: The Wall Street Years” rut), cunning and witty(ish). I suspect he’s good company at the bar, charming (as most Dulwich College old boys tend to be) and can be relied on for a half-decent one-liner.

Take this example, delivered to Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council, in the European Parliament in 2010: “Who are you? I’d never heard of you, nobody in Europe had heard of you… you’ve got the charisma of a damp rag and the appearance of a low-grade bank clerk.” Now tell us what you really think, Nigel.

But this is also a man who will describe the leaders of the EU as “bad people” (greedy, misguided, plain wrong… but bad?). Farage is also prone to behaving childishly. When Prince Charles was invited to give a speech to the European Parliament this wannabe world statesman decided to register his fury by sitting down during the standing ovation. Bold, revolutionary stuff, eh?

UKIP has a Dad’s Army-like appeal. They are a tough bunch of buggers who relish a scrap

Aside from their desire for an “amicable divorce” from Europe, UKIP’s policies are also inauthentic: a superficially attractive mix of populist fancies including a flat tax, a return to student grants, dramatically increased defence spending, a scrapping of all subsidies for renewable energy and “tens of billions” in tax cuts.

How will all this be paid for? The back of Farage’s fag packet reveals this will be covered by £77bn of cuts to public expenditure. Where exactly will these cuts fall and at what rate will the flat tax be set? The party will get back to you on that one as it’s still chatting it through. Inconsistencies, to put it politely, run through all policy areas for UKIP, and even its website carries an unusual disclaimer making clear that  the 2010 manifesto should not in any way be regarded as current policy. It may soon need to extend the disclaimer to cover anything uttered by Farage in 2011 and 2012.

No, for Farage read “mirage”, and the Conservatives must work harder to reveal the truth about UKIP. The spending gap (some put it at £120bn) must be hung around his neck and jabbed at continually. It’s right that the public should know who and what they are voting for, and telling the Farage story fairly, accurately but effectively is the right thing to do – not least as the media are unlikely to derail one of their favourite games by doing so themselves.

As a small example, I’d like to see a straightforward YouTube-friendly package of Farage’s less pleasant and stranger utterances to balance out his self-made collection of populist rants against Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and various unelected Eurocrats.

Interestingly, it seems that there may be some internal rumblings about Farage as well. The party’s treasurer and biggest donor, Stuart Wheeler, said recently that his leader should be doing less media and allow others in the party to share the limelight. His concern, he said, was that poor Farage would end up exhausted, which some cynics might translate as meaning he’s getting too large for his loafers and should wind his neck in a bit.

UKIP, however, does have an authentic point to make about Britain. Mainstream politics has become disconnected from the public, and the statistics UKIP churn out on election turnout are broadly accurate and worrying.

This problem won’t be solved quickly: certainly not in time for the next election. But, as I’ve argued before, the rot can be stopped. The solution certainly does not involve slagging off the party that presents itself, however implausibly, as the answer to reconnection.

UKIP must be taken seriously so as to expose just how empty-headed it really is. Every utterance must be recorded and analysed, every speech given proper attention by some of the bigger, more ambitious young brains in CCHQ, every tweet matched where appropriate by a sensible question applying targeted pressure to UKIP policy. CCHQ should be concerned about the make-up of UKIP’s party membership and, of course, look for evidence of extreme views in their candidates and members. But to brand the entire party as racist or bonkers will always be self-defeating.

Europe will, of course, continue to be the drum that UKIP bangs the loudest. The Conservatives’ post election in/out referendum promise took the wind out of UKIP sails but more work will need to be done as next year’s European elections approach. On that issue, I’m in no doubt, William Hague is already burning the midnight oil.

The Conservatives should tread carefully on immigration but never tire of talking about -fairness, particularly on jobs, welfare, health and the cost of living.

Competence is also key. The UKIP machine must be tested as it serves as an indicator of its overall political credibility. That UKIP failed to include its own name on the London Mayoral ballot paper last year is a pointer that all is not well around the Farage photocopier. The donor defectors must be wondering what, exactly, their money is being spent on.

The Tories should also be cautious, but not too afraid of the threat of more defections. They always make the headlines and are loved by the lobby for the tales of betrayal and back-stabbing that they are. But it would take a big and serious name to really hurt. And that remains unlikely.

How to handle UKIP in the TV debates is a thorny issue. Farage has a bit of a point when he says that if UKIP “win” the European elections next year it would be strange for him not to take part in the leadership debates 12 months later. His argument has no precedent (not least as the TV debates have only happened once) but you don’t have to be a social media guru to see how his campaign could easily take off.

The Conservatives should meet the UKIP debating challenge sooner and have Farage boxed off long before the first TV debate. It should be led by a senior Cabinet member, not the PM, and I’ve argued before that Hague, as foreign secretary, is perfectly placed for some net practice on Farage’s preferred playing surface of Europe. But a handful of other outriders should be picked and trained to take on UKIP whenever and wherever it gets traction. On policy it should be taken seriously and seriously dismantled.

Some voices in the Tory ranks will say this strategy is wrong and that there are two easy ways to spike UKIP’s guns. First rely only on the straightforward message: “Vote UKIP, Get Miliband”. It’s a good message, has the benefit of being true and UKIP supporters – by three to one – would rather see a David Cameron-led Government than one led by Red Ed. But that message is not enough on its own.

The second option is to simply ignore UKIP altogether. Don’t give it oxygen and it will eventually fade away, the argument goes. But I think an increasingly significant number of Conservative supporters, beyond those members recently polled, are tempted, most only slightly, by UKIP and desperately want to see their party make the argument against in a grown-up,professional way. And they need to know and be told that David Cameron values their votes and is prepared to work hard for them.

His party can do this by attacking UKIP’s lack of authenticity, undermining its outsider status and energetically taking it on at every turn. As Corporal Jones might have said, “UKIP – they don’t like it up ’em.” But up ’em, prime minister, you must surely stick it.

Commissioners have told an MEP that too much time has elapsed since the funding was awarded for it to be clawed back when the West Bromwich building is closed and turned into a sixth form college.

It had been feared that Sandwell Council taxpayers would have to foot the bill.

But confirmation that they would not emerged after independent Eurosceptic MEP Nikki Sinclaire asked a question in the Brussels Parliament about what would happen to the funding, awarded between 2003 and 2008 to the £72m West Bromwich venue.

Commissioner Johannes Hahn replied that the rules allowed money to be demanded back if the use of the building was changed within five years.

But he said: “In this case, the managing authority would not have a legal basis to request a repayment of European regional development funding as too much time has passed since the decision to award funding was taken.

“The managing authority has been and remains in contact with the local authority representatives and, given the available information, agrees with the current proposals for the project fit with the scope and criteria of the original.”

Miss Sinclaire said: “I am relieved that local taxpayers will not have to foot the bill.

“This was our money in the first place that was coming back to the UK from the European Commission for this project. I would not have wanted to see it taken away again. However it does raise questions about how this money is awarded if the purpose of a building in receipt of it can be changed after just five years.”

Sandwell Council leader Councillor Darren Cooper said: “We have been in regular contact with all the original funders of The Public project, to keep them up to date with our plans.

“We have been clear that in addition to becoming a sixth form college, the building would still support enterprise, business and arts.

“We are obviously pleased to note the European Commission agrees we do not have to pay back any European money, and have secured the agreement of the Department for Communities and Local Government as the managing authority on this.”

Tom Watson, MP for West Bromwich East, said: “This is welcome news for everyone who has a stake in the future of this project.

“I’m sure that Sandwell Council has provided sufficient reassurance that art will still form a component of the building in future.”

Sandwell Council is set to sign a deal to let Sandwell College use the building.

It will also include arts space and a business support facility.

The deal, which will see the college and council enter into a 25-year partnership, is set to be put to Sandwell Council’s cabinet of senior councillors on October 16.

The plan is expected to save taxpayers £37 million over 25 years.

In response I have posted the following comment:

Hi,

relative to the £Billions which vanish into the EU and its abject failure to manage to provide valid accounts and a clear realisation by the public and complacent acceptance by the EU’s self serving and unelected bureacrats the £8Million in question is but a drop in the ocean.

However extending this level of profligacy and indifference to public funds across the board, as The EU clearly does, is what makes up the £Billions that have gone missing and preclude the EU from producing balanced books.

It is as a result acceptable to point out that the £53Million, or so, squandered by the British Government on our membership each and every day, is clearly funding this corrupt institution – a scam by any standards!

That Britain borrows £Millions every day and only saves itself from bankruptcy by artyificially, and thus dishonestly, controlling interest rates at 2% should concern every citizens and cause them to ask why is Britain a major contributor to this corrupt organisation?

The £53Million a day is NOT Government money it is borrowed money for which the British tax payer is liable and at a time when Britain is around 900% of our GDP in debt how can anyone responsibly advocate t6his level of unbridled lunacy.

Would you be happy to owe 9 times your annual income before tax (and rising), with nothing to show for it as it dribbled away funding scams and daily bills?

Just who do our MPs, MEPs, Civil Servants and petty political apparachiks represent? Clearly it is not Britain, our interests or our peoples!

May I remind you that The Weirmar Republic collapsed in ruins, leading to WWII and that Britain’s debt exceeds that of the Argentine when it collapsed, America when it collapsed in the great depression between WWI & II, Italy, Greece, Spain and Eire – IF we remain in the EU it is not a matter of IF we collapse but when!

Yet our politicians lie, cheat and defraud us to remain in this monstrous POLITICAL scam despite its failure in economic terms and in the manner in which the British peoples are defrauded!

More Hypocrisy From The UKIP Fuhrer.

The following is taken directly from UKIP’s 2010 manifesto. It appears in the transport section.

“Invest in three new 200mph plus high-speed rail lines including a new line between London and Newcastle with a spur to Manchester, a London-Bristol-Exeter line and a linking route via Birmingham.”

Note please the words new, high-speed, and link.

So that would be HS2, then.

But now, of course, that others have taken the lead and roused opposition, it becomes prudent for the little man in the silly suit to pretend that he was against it all along. In fact, he has even claimed that UKIP is the only party to have opposed HS2.

Calling for it in a recent manifesto is a funny way to oppose it!

Or perhaps they thought that nobody would notice!

As posted on Junius at CLICK HERE

Hi,

I think it was only their turn coat Peer and at the time Party leader Malcolm Lord Pearson, who has clearly not read the manifesto.

In fact he didn’t even know his party’s aim was to oppose the Tories against whom he urged a number of UKIP candidates to stand down!

That also was not in the manifesto – though I see it is now mooted by Nigel Farage clearly his sad puppet Tim Acker has no say as Policy Director just as Will Gilpin was sabotaged by bad leadership and bad practice!

.
There is of course no sound or viable case for HS2 which is a staggeringly costly vanity project.

The cheaper and far more sensible solution is to set out earlier if you wish tyo reach your destination sooner!

It is also well worth noting that railways have throughout their history syphoned work and people OUT of the provinces and rural areas to ever larger conurbations. Likewise jobs!

Further it is self evident that, by casting ones mind back a like time and noting the intervening progress, the country and technology will be incredibly different by the time HS2 was running if vanity prevails and it goes ahead.

Video conferencing may well have become a three dimensional experience by then and the need for travel will thus diminish considerably.

To liken rail as a service in Britain to that of continental countries is just dishonest as it is NOT the cost of transport which is the problem on rail it is the cost of handling! Britain is a tiny island by comparison with continental EUrope where goods and people can be transported 1,000s of miles with only one loading amnd unloading cost whereas in Britain few journeys exceed 150 miles and most are under 100 miles for that same handling cost.

No wonder our railways are not viable they are and will remain excessively expensive!

There is in fact a very sound argument for dismantling our railways as then commuting would become all but unviable and businesses would decentralise spreading jobs and wealth more widely and evenly, stabilising these United Kingdoms as a balanced area and pandering to the green lobby and the warmists by reducing the need for travel and the polluting influence of trains!

Hi,

interestingly (well sort of) Robin Tilbrook

has been bleating on his blog at having his extremist and divisive followers in the EDP branded as extremists!:

Friday, 27 September 2013

….
One of the “interesting” issues that arose over the on/off affair of Mike Nattrass was that the UKIP defector, Nikki Sinclaire MEP, issued a press release and blog item attacking the English Democrats in wild and hysterically vitriolic terms.   Edited highlights of this rant include the bizarre claims that the English Democrats are “extremist” and “now contain and tolerate some of the most undesirable and disgusting people in our society” and “who seem on intent on enlarging themselves primarily first and foremost regardless of normal and social acceptability”!
….

My comment, which may or may not be published on his blog, where comment is invited, is as follows:

Hi,

the EDP draws on its roots of revivifying Robin Tilbrook’s The English National Party of the 1960s.

Face the facts – many consider it extremist to actively campaign & support these United Kingdoms being broken up, be that by Nazi Germany in 1939 or the foolish self serving political antics of Palid, Mabion Kernow, EDP or SNP.

That the EDP willingly compounds this by taking on high profile ex BNP members exacerbates their problem of being seen as extremists.

Robin Tilbrook unfortunately has a track record of damaging his own fan club with rants and vitriolic attacks as we see in his own entry on Wiki:

‘However, Davies announced his resignation from the party on 5 February 2013 citing “a big influx of new members joining from the British National Party”.[10] One of its councillors, Mick Glynn, resigned the following day after the party’s chairman, Robin Tilbrook,[11] launched a personal attack on Peter Davies reducing its number of elected representatives to two.’

Yet again the mouse that roared has emerged with a vitriolic ad hominem rant when his doomed plans to embrace the shambolic and politically challenged Mike Nattrass to try to boost his chances for growth predictably failed.

How foolish to have broken confidence and published early negotiations with Sinclaire, showing his political ineptitude and untrustworthy nature – as with the broadcasting of the details of his negotiations with the foolish Mike Nattrass when he failed to capture his support.

Pray tell – in his political campaigning since the 1960s spanning 6 decades wjhat has Tilbrook achieved and what signs of leadership have presented – leadership is more than betrayal of trust and ill cobnsidered ad hominem attacks!

Perhaps if the EDP is to continue on its extremist and damaging path ity may be time to find a leader of some competence and substance!

Regards,

Greg_L-W.

here in passing is the private correspondence between Mike Nattrass & Robin Tilbrook’s EDP which they spread widely including to the media when Robin Tilbrook’s efforts to piggy back on Mike Nattrass’ position as an MEP came to nought.

To ensure I was not in breech of confidence, having received the material from an executive of the EDP, I obtain verbal confirmation from an executive of the EDP that I could publish the material they had circulated:

BREAKING NEWS – MEP, MIKE NATTRASS MOVES TO THE ENGLISH DEMOCRATS

West Midlands MEP Mike Nattrass has announced that he wishes to join the English Democratic Party, the only party that wants England to be independent of the EU.

Mike Nattrass will be standing as the English Democrats’ Lead Candidate for the EU Parliament election on the 22nd May 2014, with supporting positions taken by Derek Hilling, Party Secretary and David Lane, West Midlands Chairman.

The English Democrats are delighted to welcome Mike Nattrass as a member of the party and as our first English Democrat MEP.

Mike joined the English Democrats because no other party stands firm and believes in the protection of  English interests.

Robin Tilbrook, the English Democrats Party Chairman, said:-  “I am delighted to welcome Mike Nattrass as a member of the English Democrats and look forward to getting him re-elected again as an English Democrat MEP, on 22nd May 2014.

“Over the coming year Scottish Independence will be in focus as they face the Scottish Independence referendum.  The English Democrats are England’s equivalent to that Party and our conference will debate further one of our key policy proposals, Independence for England.”

Robin continued:- “The EU Justice Commissioner has already confirmed that when England becomes independent it will not remain within the EU and would “have to re-join”!

As our policy is that “We will not wish to rejoin!”  this will appeal to all those wishing to see England escape, out of the EU!”

Mike Nattrass MEP responded by saying “England is my home and The English Democrats are my Party. The policy of not applying to rejoin the EU is English music to my ears”

Key facts about the English Democrats

The English Democrats launched in 2002. The English Democrats are the English nationalist Party which campaigns for a Parliament for England, First Minister and Government, with at least the same powers as the Scottish ones within a Federal UK; for St George’s Day to be England’s National holiday; for Jerusalem to be England’s National Anthem; for a Referendum to leave the EU; for an end to mass immigration; for the Cross of St George to be flown on all public buildings in England.

The English Democrats are England’s answer to the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru. The English Democrats’ greatest electoral successes to date include winning the Directly Elected Executive Mayoralty of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council and the 2012 referendum; We won the referendum which triggered a referendum to give Salford City an Elected Mayor; In 2012 we saved all our deposits in the Police Commissioner elections and came second in South Yorkshire; In the 2009 EU election we gained 279,801 votes after a total EU campaign spend of less than £25,000 (giving the English Democrats by far the most cost efficient electoral result of any serious Party in the UK)

BREAKING NEWS – UKIP MEP, MIKE NATTRASS MOVES TO THE ENGLISH DEMOCRATS

UKIP’s only remaining West Midlands MEP has announced that he is moving from UKIP, partly in disgust at Nigel Farage’s corruption of the UKIP’s selection processes and also because Mike Nattrass wants to be part of the only genuine English Nationalist Party that wants England to be independent of the EU.  Mike Nattrass will be standing as the English Democrats’ Lead Candidate for the EU Parliament election on the 22nd May 2014, with supporting positions taken by Derek Hilling, our Party Secretary and David Lane, our West Midlands Chairman.

The English Democrats are delighted to welcome Mike Nattrass as a member of the English Democrats and as our first English Democrat MEP.  Mike’s move to join us is partly as a result of UKIP’s obsessive focus on the United Kingdom and the exclusion of any genuine interest in English interests.

Robin Tilbrook, the English Democrats Party Chairman, said:-  “I am delighted to welcome Mike Nattrass as a member of the English Democrats and look forward to working with him to get him re-elected this time as an English Democrats MEP, in May 2014.  Over the coming year I am fully expecting the question of Scottish Independence to become of increasing interest as we build up to the Scottish Independence referendum.  The English Democrats are England’s equivalent to the Scottish Nationalist Party and the only party that is a genuine English nationalist party.  At our conference one of the key proposals is the adoption of a keynote policy of Independence for England.”

Robin continued:- “Interestingly if England becomes independent the EU Justice Commissioner has already confirmed that any newly independent nation will automatically be outside of the EU, claiming that they would “have to re-join”!  Our policy of Independence for England will therefore appeal to all those who want England to leave the EU!”

Hello Mike,

I’m sorry but I won’t be flying back into Birmingham until Friday afternoon, I have work meetings in the morning.

Is there something urgent that needs to happen before the NC? I had not got this impression from previous communications. I would prefer to set aside time next week for a full discussion.

Hello Mike,

I am currently in Birmingham airport waiting for a flight to Amsterdam. The trip is only for work I’m afraid, I don’t think I shall be partaking of any of the local delights!

I’m back on Friday so let’s have a chat before the meeting and arrange something convenient for us all, perhaps next week. It seems like we are all a bit pre-occupied this week.

Mike,

I appreciate your reluctance with FaceBook and Twitter and I would not want you to undertake any campaigning activity that you are not comfortable with. That was not where I was coming from.

I simply want you, David and I to work out a ‘modus operandi’ but this does not necessarily have to be done on Friday evening. I hope you would agree that it will be better in the long term to know where we all stand.

See you Friday!

CONFIDENTIAL

Good to hear from you and you can call or email anytime.

However I am not sure which aspect you are meaning, because you have not missed anything.

Any agreement, for example is still in draft and the last thing we need are many draft agreements flying about and being commented upon, when they are all incorrect and conflict with EU rules!
My first reply to that agreement was yesterday when I tried to point out that EU rules are paramount in budget planning etc.
Any agreement which supposes otherwise, and gets out, would make page one of The Guardian! The less emails the better.

We need a concluding meeting on Friday …evening? But only if you and I are happy and the members want me to join.

I have never thought that you had no plan, but the emails have not been about a plan and no plan has been discussed. I have not mentioned any plan and certainly not made a comment about a plan.

David has had an email from me about 4 ex BNP members and I await that reply. I need to know the facts to defend because I will be under attack. Already Nikki Sinclaire, UKIP and another have send me lists of so called undesirables taken in from the BNP. A myth that I need to strongly counter!!

I REFUSE POINT BLANK TO GO ONTO FACEBOOK OR TWITTER and I have to say that this is a prime condition of any further progress.
Facebook has lost UKIP two seats and caused major problems (I blame it for the heart attack and death of a UKIP Councillor). The two worst problems I have with your party are two facebook entries. One a Holocaust Denial from a member and another about Thalidomide victims. If you cannot see the damage look again. I am still waiting a rely from David (who I can see is a good chap)

I am in Brussels today and speaking at Probus, Droitwich tomorrow and the tread mill never stops.

You have not been out of any loop and nothing has yet been concluded without you.

Good luck.

Mike.

Dear Mike,

If you would be so good as to include myself and David Lane in any future correspondence regarding arrangements with the English Democrats, I think this will foster a better working relationship. Ultimately it is David and myself that you will have to deal with on a day-to-day basis, not Steve.

As I have previously stated myself and David would like to meet with you, after our conference this weekend, to work-out an agreement for the coming months and years. We certainly do have a plan whatever you may have thought previously.

I look forward to a suggested date for such a meeting, or perhaps we can discuss this when we meet on Friday.

See you Friday!

regards,
Derek

Thanks for this – we appear to be broadly in agreement, but no doubt Derek Hilling and David Lane will wish to add a few further details, especially relating to the 2014 Campaign and working together in the West Midlands.

Robin as you are aware is a Solicitor so the final version I suggest is produced by Robin Tilbrook, I hope this is OK ?

Derek Hilling (National Party Secretary) will confirm the arrangements for Friday Evening at the Leicester Hilton.

DRAFT ……………
SUBJECT TO OUR MEETING ON 20th SEPT 2013.

1/ I will become an English Democrat MEP transferring from UKIP on 21 September 2013 – and recognise the opportunity to raise the profile of the English Democrats through the expected press attention, and would indeed encourage current UKIP members from all over England to join the English Democrats.

2/ The EU Communications budget and other MEP EU budgets are subject to tight EU rules and the English Democrats will not attempt to influence the MEP in breaking any of those rules.

EU money cannot for example be expended in The West Midlands Election Campaign and this is understood.

I will provide the £5000 deposit and recover it when refunded.
I will fund raise for my campaign and consult with yourselves throughout.

The 7 staff currently employed are dealing with constituency issues and whilst they gain good publicity for the MEP in solving constituency issues they are not for example a Campaign Team.

3/ I wish to head the West Midlands English Democrats Party List (Lead Candidate 2014 West Midlands) and serve as an MEP for 1 year if elected.

IN THE EVENT OF MY ELECTION AS AN MEP IN 2014……………….

4/ I would employ Derek Hilling for one year from 1st September 2014 as part of my EU Staff if elected at £40,000 per year. (If he is not elected in the No 2 Slot)

5/ After one year I will step down on 1st September 2015 as the MEP for the West Midlands, and transfer to Derek Hilling

6/  At 1st September 2015 I will be employed by Derek Hilling MEP as part of his EU Staff for 2 years at £40,000 per year.

7/ Derek Hilling will continue to pay the rent at the regional office at 48 Fentham Road, Hampton in Arden B92 0AYoffice for the 5 year term operating until 2019.

8/ Derek Hilling MEP will take over and respect any existing staff contracts.

9 / I undertake to leave the position of MEP on 1st Sept 2015 and if Derek Hilling, for any reason, cannot take over the post of MEP then another person will be selected by the Leadership of the English Democrats and all of the above conditions will apply by the substitution of their name for that of Derek Hilling.

10/ I am willing to sign a legal document to confirm an agreement reached.

This is all confidential and “IF”

Derek has now replied while riding a bicycle and I am uncertain that he will commit to running the Region in the way I suggest.

The reality of actually winning or the planning of what to do if he is elected may not appear relevant to him. He wants to stand up for his country but I think he doubts if he can win…… otherwise he would have a plan

If I am to do this for him I need to know that he will take over my office and the deal I was going to put to him I have held back, because I can see that he will not think it through.

Members and branches will follow me and obviously my office staff stay with me until July 2014.

We need to talk and i will explain.

Steve,

Thank you for the direct reply and I would like to give you my thoughts honestly and without commitment either way at this stage.

On evening of 6th I will be in Worcester talking to a Chairman who backed me and got 400 UKIP members and some branches to back me …. I would throw the suggestion to him!!

A meeting with you anytime on 7th is good. I live in Sutton Coldfield but you may prefer to see the office at Hampton.
Birmingham International is 3 miles and Hampton in Arden has a station.

IF I joined your team I would become an English Democrat MEP with immediate effect. I am in Strasbourg on Monday 9th and could do it then.

I am getting lots of positive press in the West Midlands and I think if I run for you in 2014 I would do well. Reporters know me and my office base would not change.

At this point I would need to make friends with the current number one. Because I have a plan which would work to his advantage ………….. will explain later.

As for 2015 …… Skipton and Ripon would be my seat please!

ALL ‘IF’ but you can see that I trust you and like the plan.

Dear Mike

A am a soft Southerner, but I do have a reputation for straight talking !

In  response to your questions.

1/  As an English Nationalist Party and we are against the EU, we Contest the 9 English EU Regions – and will be doing so in 2014, this qualifies the English Democrats for a Party Political Broadcast.

2/ My valued colleague and long standing party member and activist Derek Hilling (National Party Secretary) has already been recommended by the West Midlands Area Council to stand as the lead candidate in the West Midlands, this had been officially confirmed by our National Council, and will be announced on 21 September 2013 at our National Party Conference in Leicester on 21 September, along with the other 7 lead EU Candidates (excluding London where no selection has yet been made).

3/ We have met a couple of times, and you indeed kindly spoke at our English Democrats Conference a few years ago with Nikki Sinclaire, there were no personality problems from an English Democrats point of view, with either yourself or Nikki, and we would welcome your support.

4/ Nigel Farage – we are well aware of the antics of Nigel Farage- and the fact that he does not run UKIP along democratic lines, but considers UKIP  to be his  own private domain, there appear to be many UKIP members now unhappy about the UKIP Selection process.  The English Democrats have been victims of “double dealing” from Nigel Farage in the past.

5/ If your support of the English Democrats goes as far as wanting to stand for the English Democrats, then the current possibilities in the English Democrats for the 2014 EU Elections Candidates (subject to our selection process)  are therefore realistically either Lead candidate in London, or 2nd Spot in any other EU Region including the West Midlands standing for the English Democrats – you may like to also think about Yorkshire, as I know you are a Yorkshireman. (Again this would be subject to our Yorkshire Team and our selection process).

6/ Politics is a nasty game, but as we would also  be happy to land a blow on Nigel Farage, a defection of a sitting UKIP MEP to the English Democrats announced the week before BOTH conferences in 2013 would be a great first move in the 2014 EU Campaign, and would raise the profile of the English Democrats – the BBC would lap it up.

7/ Although time is short, then I believe we have time to sort out a mutually convenient arrangement, that follows the English Democrats procedures before Monday 16 September 2013.

Current English Democrats  Manifesto:-http://www.englishdemocrats.org.uk/policies-full-manifesto.html

If you are still interested in meeting, then two or three of us would be delighted to visit you next week in Hampton in Arden, probably early evening.

The most likely date is the 7th September 2013 for a meeting or after the 9th.

Proabably best to confirm meeting arrangements by telephone.

Kind regards

Steve,

Being a Northerner I come to the point.

How many regions will you contest at the European elections please?

Who is your lead candidate for West Midlands please?

I am in the mood to help you, we have met and you impress me and providing we agree on policy (I need to just check) the publicity would be dynamic.

I have worked hard and done nothing wrong in UKIP. My personal following is very good (because I say it as it is, smile and insult everyone equally) My press contacts are very large.

My crime against Nigel was to point at racists in the EFD Group (not even the party). I wrote to the UKIP NEC and said that we should not associate with them. But Nigel needed the numbers, to keep the leadership of the group so I was not popular.

However what I had warned about then happened. Mario (Italian) who I had warned about, endorsed the views of the Norwegian mass murderer (giving Nigel more than a frown) and then racially abused a Black Italian Government Minister ….. final straw Nigel sacked him. SO THEY SAY I WAS NOT LOYAL TO THE PARTY! Sorry, no, just trying to protect the UKIP name from racists.

I look forward to talking.

Mike

Steve,

Yes, it may be worth having a chat.

I am back in the UK late on 5th and in my office at Hampton in Arden on 6th.
On 9th I will be in Strasbourg voting NO.

Can we meet 6th, 7th or 8th?

Where are you based?

Why not!

See you Friday!

regards,
Derek

Good luck.

How UKIP managed to lose 45% of their MEPs

UKIP-MEPs-collage-2

UKIP’s farcical national conference and the subsequent forced resignation of Godfrey Bloom this week have brought cheer to the party’s opponents, across the political spectrum. Mr Bloom – the most ‘colourful’ character in a technicolour party – managed an unprecedented series of gaffes in the space of a single, tumultuous day. He began with the now infamous ‘sluts’ comment and ended by hitting a journalist on live TV when asked about the party’s ‘all white’ conference brochure. A tearful Nigel Farage later took to the stage to declare that his erstwhile flatmate had single-handedly “ruined our conference”. Rarely has so much bad publicity been awarded to so many by so few.

But Mr Bloom’s departure from UKIP’s delegation in Brussels and Strasbourg (he remains a party member, apparently) is far from an isolated incident. In fact, he is now the sixth UKIP MEP (out of 13) to either leave or be kicked out since the European elections in 2009. He follows Nikki Sinclaire (expelled), David Campbell-Bannerman (defected to the Tories), Mike Nattrass (de-selected and then resigned), Trevor Coleman (quit UKIP’s European grouping) and Marta Andreasen (defected to the Tories).

This means the party has lost almost half of their original MEPs since 2009. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, losing one MEP may seem a misfortune, but to lose six seems like carelessness.  It is small consolation that UKIP have in the meantime gained one Tory defector (the climate- and LGBT-sceptic Roger Helmer MEP). Only the BNP have done worse, having lost 50% of their MEPs (one out of two) since 2009.

The irony of all this is that most voters (and even other MEPs) don’t have a clue who UKIP’s MEPs are. They are rarely seen in the influential parliamentary committee meetings where EU legislation is shaped, to the extent (as Fiona Hall MEP memorably noted in Glasgow) that UKIP’s leader is known in the corridors of Brussels and Strasbourg as ‘Mr Mirage’. Indeed the independent VoteWatch Europe website found that UKIP have the worst attendance, voting and work performance of any political party from any EU country.

The challenge is in getting the message out to voters: that backing UKIP means throwing away Britain’s influence. Luckily, Mr Bloom’s escapades have just helped to make our job as campaigners a little easier.

Hi,

Nigel Farage’s party functions more as a cult than any concept of a political party or even a movement.

You must pay obeisance to the Great Leader of UKIP regardless of his inability to lead & self serving centralising of power and absolute control.

It is not just the fact that out of 13 elected UKIP MEPs Nigel Farage’s ineptitude and divisive style means he is left with only 4 who support him two of whom do so in the hope of an opportunity to stab him in the back to take control.

Do not overlook the fact that of 7 leaders over the l;ast 20 years only two remain in UKIP and one of those is Farage. Then of course of those elected to UKIP’s NEC 74 have been forced off many as a result of bullying, liers and underhand means engineered by Farage’s placemen.

For more verifiable facts see http://UKIP-vs-EUkip.com and for details on UKIP’s few remaining MEPs see:
https://ukip-vs-eukip.com/2013/09/27/how-ukip-gets-the-meps-farage-wants

I trust this helps readers to see through the flim flam, lies and spin of UKIP and that they can found their decisions on fact NOT propaganda.

Hi,

it is interesting ton note just how divisive and incompetent the pretence of leadership by Nigel Farage is!

You will note the general degradation of standard in the party and particularly amongst the activists and the claque – UKIP under the control of Farage has always been of the politically misguided op[inion that it is numbers that coun t, failing to understand the principles of leadership where gravitas and the calliber is far more valuable that mere numbers.

Of the 7 leaders UKIP has had since its foundation, it is a sobering realisation that only two remain members of the party and one of those is Farage – The others having left in outspoken acrimonious terms relative to Farage, in the main.

Do also consider that at least 74 elected members of the party NEC have quit or been forced out, mostly citing the behaviour of Nigel Farage as their reason. Often as a result of a style of kangaroo court beneath contempt such as the witych hunt against Chris Pain who we gather was forced out as he was seen as a threat by Farage and trumped up claims that he was supplying factual information to myself and team Junius were used, despite there being not one shred of evidence to back the speculation.

The bullying misogyny of the leadership clique has also ensured that not a single competent & intelligent woman has survived for any period in a position of consequence most noticeably commencing with Janet Girsman who was elected to the NEC but blocked ever from taking up her seat.

Farage even resorted to trying legal action to force Nikki Sinclaire out but lost the case resulting in her strengthened position where it was she who left UKIP in disgust as an MEP on ethical grounds.

Consider CLICK HERE

The list of competent women who have seen through Farage’s inept leadership and the style of his deeply unsavoury cult includes many more like Petrina Holdsworth, Linda Guest, Rachel Oxley, Barbara Booker & numerous others.

Of the 18 MEPs UKIP has managed to elect Farage now finds himself with only 5 who claim to support him and even some of those would seem to be hanging in there in ther hope of taking over when Farage falls.

UKIP voters elected 13 MEPs at the last election but few remain so is a vote for UKIP just a vote to get an MEP elected so that they can then sit with a different party or a different group?

Interestingly UKIP’s own web site shows their claim to still have 11 of their 13 elected MEPs yet can only identify 8! Even of these 8 there is no sign of support from some for Farage’s party!
MEPs as at 26-09-2013
Well lets have a brush with reality!

Roger Helmer is NOT a UKIP elected MEP – he is a turncoat from the Tories w3ho having announced he was resigning was thwarted in his ambition to have his choice of successor and then in pique withrew his resignation and to spite the Tories threw in his lot with UKIP where in many ways he is more of a liability than an asset!

John Bufton has effectively quit supporting Farage & his party as he has stated he will not stand for UKIP at the next election, but it is understood he may well stand for another party or as an independent. John Bufton as UKIP’s MEP has openly stated he totally disagrees with Nigel Farage’s  diktat policy relative to Wales!

Trevor Coleman having followed Nikki Sinclaire’s ethical lead and quit Farage’s odious racist, anti homosexual and extreme EFD Group. Having promised, when he stood as a UKIP MEP, that if The UKFirstParty did well he would leave UKIP & join them one has to realise that neither Farage nor even UKIP can trust this self serving man who so rarely turns up to the EU may well be expected, when he loses his staffing allowances and ot6her expenses may well share aims with the failed UKIP leader Alan Sked!

William Legge aka William the 10th. Earl of Dartmouth was of course a failed Tory wanabe who became a placeman of Nigel Farage’s who seems to have been a sad disappointment with no financial support of consequence and all too willing, despite his inherited wealth, to accept his salary & expenses. In watchjing UKIP relatively closely for over 15 years with relativeluyn close ties I have yet to note ANYTHING of consequence tyhat William Legge has done towards the aim to Leave-The-EU beyond make a spectacle of himself and UKIP by having a tantrum in The EUP when he failed to get his own way – akin to a spoilt 3 year old.

So in reality Farage now finds that of 13 MEPs elected by UKIP voters he now only seems to have 4 still on board and of those 2 would be all too willing to knife him in the back if they thought they might gain his position as leader.

One sometimes wonders if the bullying oaf with his threats of personal attack Stuart Agnew has any future as he is still under investigation, together with David Bannerman, for his boasts of fraud made on camera to Daniel Foggo’s assistant and The Sunday Times.

We then regularly note the oleagenous, unethical and dishonest Gerard Batten makes little contribution of value to the core values of UKIP, unless of course Farage is willing to admit those core values include extremist incitement and criticism of Muslims, likely to encourage racial hatred based on the perceptions that Muslim equals Asian & African, and is a sound cause for hate speech based purely on relative superstitions.
Batten is more closely linked to the EDL it seems than the original grass roots UKIPpers though I appreciate the populism of such irresponsible behaviour has attracted a large number of ex BNP supporters.
To listen to the obsession Batten has with his misunderstanding of the Bilderberg Group members one wonders if he has any role in UKIP beyond embarrassing its more ethical supporters.

As for the odious liar and fraudster Derek Clark, who its seems has avoided jail for the same offence that Tom Wise found himself sentenced to 2 years in prison purely on the defence of his geriatric status – well so far I guess. As a supporter of Farage’s, though he is of little relevance or consequence, Clark can not be faulted as this aged and venal individual has been all too willing to prostitute ethics and his Country for tyhe security of tenure of his position.

In terms of leadership it is clear from the divisive nature that has been manifest even amongst cronies, drinking chums and placemen Nigel Farage is clearly u8tterly bereft of talent as the results show.
That is not for a moment to denigrate his ability, when on form, as a performer.
All be it his antics in the EUropean Union parliament are of little value, as he is seen largely as being the leader of the intermission jesters – almost no-one, in statistical terms, ever sees his well crafted performances, leading him to ever more insulting behaviour to gain recognition if not credibility for the total lack of gravitas, research or competence of UKIP.

Although, by dropping their standards and becoming ever more willing to pander to the lowest common denominator and align with the extremists, racists and anti homosexuals, Farage has raised the number of supporters for his act of cheeky chappie down the pub when his ruthless and centralised rigid control of the party belies the act of being in some way libertarian.

The rush to the gutter has beyond doubt placed UKIP as the apposite dustbin in which to cast ones protest vote in EUropean elections, though clearly the British public do not consider them reliable or a safe pair of hands in domestic politics – hence their abject failure to come anywhere close to having an MP elected and when out of over 1,700 candidates in the local elections a mere 147 were elected the squabbling increased and the vracks opened up leaving UKIP with a showy facade for the naive but no substance for the ethical.

The failure in either domestic elections and serial claims of intent to professionalise have left UKIP as clearly unfit for purpose, with falling ratings and ever widening cracks amongst the few remaining riders on the gravy train, despite the cynical self promotion of Patrick O’Flynn in The Express, which calls into question the paper’s objectivity and ability to report when its chief political journalist is seeking to feather his nest as a UKIP candidate!
.

Greg_L-W..

Hi,

here is a quick comment I made on yet another ‘performance’ by Nigel Farage on You Tube:

Greg L-W.

Whatever the performance in the largely undemocratic EU Parliament matters little as so few people ever see it – Never has so little been done by so many. Were clips to get rather than a few 100 views rather more like 1 or 2M it would still be insignificant in terms of the size of the largely ignored electorate!

In real terms The EUP is an ego trip that hides an outdated scam of little relevance as it re-enacts & imposes the laws of WTO, CODEX etc. & funds a raft of overpaid bureaucrats!

Hi,
here is an interesting comment on UKIP, based largely on their conference – may I suggest you read it and draw your own conclusions!

Whatever Godfrey Bloom’s fate, Ukip is still giving me sleepless nights

Maybe Ukip are a one-man band and a one-trick pony, but Nigel Farage is a reckless man with a very dangerous trick.

Nigel Farage is a reckless man with a very dangerous trick.
Nigel Farage waves after addressing delegates at the UK Independence Party conference in Westminster on 20 September. Photograph: Getty Images.

This was the week when Nigel Farage was going to prove to everyone that Ukip is neither a one-man band nor a one-trick pony. He succeeded in achieving the precise opposite. The delegates unleashed on Westminster’s Central Hall appeared less like a coherent political party and more like the cast of Are You Being Served on a reunion tour. Perhaps inevitably, events unfolded – or unravelled, to be more accurate – at pace and with hilarity. At times it felt like one was watching the entire boxed set of The Thick of It on fast forward.

It all kicked off with a Channel 4 exposé the evening before the conference. Michael Crick uncovered evidence of a rather heated teachers’ meeting, during Farage’s Dulwich College days, assessing his suitability as a prefect, complete with a letter of objection describing him as someone who publicly professed views which were “racist and neo-fascist”. Farage’s defence seems to boil down to: ‘Ah! Youth.’

By the beginning of the conference proper, a heavily made-up Farage, sweating under the lights – an apt metaphor for his “everyman” image melting under closer public scrutiny – made a keynote speech which even the Daily Mail described as “flat and managerial”. Meanwhile, Ukip MEP and senior spokesman Godfrey Bloom was busy at a fringe meeting describing women who do not clean behind the fridge as “sluts”.

Questioned about it outside the hall, Bloom said he was only joking and called the reporter a “sad little man”. His aide tried to suggest that Bloom had used the term in its more antiquated meaning of “slovenly”. The two versions of events are, of course, mutually exclusive; if the word was used without its double entendre connotations, there is no joke. Challenged by Michael Crick over the lack of any black faces among the dozens which adorned the front of Ukip’s conference brochure, Bloom proceeded to smack him over the head, with said brochure.

Cue Nigel Farage trotting out the usual excuses about Godfrey being a colourful character. LOLZ. As if this were not an MEP and the party’s defence spokesman – their defence spokesman, for pity’s sake – but a hapless Carmen Miranda impersonator who wandered into the hall by accident. Cue Diane James explaining that, yes, the party may attract some controversial characters, but the thorough vetting process meant only the best made it to their European election candidate list; she conveniently glossed over the fact that Bloom was one who had made it through this vetting process. What were the controversial characters who didn’t make it like?

As it became clear that the usual flannel would not fly, Bloom had the party whip withdrawn. Irritated, he continued to give interviews. They included one explaining that if journalists showed “impertinence”, they could expect much worse than Crick and one in which he asked the BBC’s Allegra Stratton “has your mother never called you a slut?”, then proceeded to tell her she had no sense of humour.

As was, perhaps, foreshadowed by the fact that Ukip shared Central Hall during their conference with a Carry On Memorabilia Convention, the comedy gold continued to flow the next day. A personal highlight was the anti-immigration speech, by first generation immigrant Amjad Bashir, which opened with “I wasn’t born in Yorkshire, but I came as soon as I could”. By the end of the two-day fiasco, “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists” seemed like a rather charitable assessment.

Now the laughter has died down, however, it is time to assess seriously the politics of the Ukip “phenomenon”. I am not comforted by the fact Ukip has finally withdrawn their whip from Godfrey Bloom. Instead, I note that he is the fifth MEP out of their 13 elected to have the whip withdrawn. Instead, I worry about the fact that he was the best they could muster after their thorough vetting process. Instead, I question why the whip was not withdrawn when he addressed the European Parliament while drunk, or when he said employers would have to be mad to employ single, young women, or when he referred to the whole of the developing world as “bongo bongo land”.

I am not really concerned about Nigel Farage’s reported racist comments in 1981. I am concerned about his outrageous 2005 manifesto pledge to check any incoming migrants for communicable diseases. His alleged youthful neo-fascist views give me little pause for thought. His current association with neo-fascist parties at the European level gives me sleepless nights.

Before the conference Farage mused that they have no real ambition to form a government, but that – who knows? – maybe in 2015 they will find themselves holding “the balance of power”. In this age of coalitions, how many Godfrey Blooms lurk in Farage’s shadow, ready to assume ministerial posts? Maybe Ukip are a one-man band and a one-trick pony, but he is a reckless man with a very dangerous trick.
