UKIP loses majority on Thanet Council after 5th councilor quits
The UK Independence Party (UKIP) has lost its majority on Thanet Council, the first and only local authority to be controlled by the party and the region where leader Nigel Farage made his unsuccessful bid for MP in the general election.
Councilor Jeff Elenor quit UKIP on Tuesday to join four other defectors in a newly-formed party, the Democratic Independent Group.
The five UKIP councilors left the party over the direction council leader Chris Well had taken on the mothballed Manston Airport. UKIP made much of its pledge to reopen the airport during its May election campaign.
Former Green Councilor Ian Driver told RT that disagreements over Manston Airport could spell the end of UKIP’s control of Thanet Council.
The local split mirrors ongoing rows within UKIP’s national ranks, where Nigel Farage has clashed with the party’s only MP Douglas Carswell over which campaign to back for Britain to leave the EU.
Elenor, who joined UKIP in 2008, said he was concerned by the council’s inaction on the compulsory purchase of the airport.
“I was concerned by the lack of action with the [compulsory purchase order], but it was not an easy decision to make. I have been with the party for a long time but the issue of the airport became so important,” he said.
“It was important to behave honorably to the people who elected me.”
The councilor cited local Conservative MP Richard Gale’s intervention as a contributing factor in his decision to leave UKIP.
In an open letter sent to the council leader Chris Wells on Monday, Gale slammed the council’s delays regarding the airport.
Will the last #Ukip member to leave #Thanet council please stack the chairs, switch off the lights and set the alarm. Thank you.
“Your council was elected on a promise that I for one have to believe that you, personally, have no intention of honoring although other members and past members of your party wish to do so,” he wrote.
“My support for your leadership in respect of Manston Airport is therefore formally withdrawn.”
US firm RiverOak is seeking to partner with Thanet Council to buy and run the airport, but is waiting for the local authority to issue a compulsory purchase order [CPO] on the site’s current owners.
Former Thanet District Councilor Ian Driver told RT that UKIP councilors are disillusioned by the party’s approach to Manston Airport.
“Just like Labour and the Tories, [UKIP] were making misleading promises and now that they’ve taken power and seem unable or unwilling to do anything about Manston. A lot of the people who joined the party because of Manston and stood as councilors are now becoming very, very disillusioned and disappointed in UKIP.”
Driver predicts the ongoing division within UKIP will soon put the council back in Tory hands.
“I would think in the next few weeks, what remains of UKIP will probably announce that it’s breaking off negotiations with RiverOak, and that may see even more members quitting the party and becoming independents, or even joining the Conservatives.
“So you could well see the Conservatives back in control at Thanet Council fairly soon … I definitely think the Conservatives will be back.”

Nigel Farage faces a European Parliament investigation for using taxpayer funds to pay for a roadshow around Britain campaigning against the European Union.
The Ukip leader has been reported to Brussels authorities for financing his ‘Say No To EU’ speaking tour using EU money allocated to his group of MEPs.
Mr Farage’s Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy group (EFDD) – which is made up of Ukip MEPs and Eurosceptics from other countries – has received 6.4million euros (£4.7million) from the Parliament in the past three years to pay for its activities.

Labour MP Wes Streeting has written to the president, Martin Schulz, after he discovered some of the money is being used to sponsor Mr Farage’s anti-EU tour, which he is using to launch his anti-EU campaign.
Mr Farage is currently visiting theatres and hotels across Britain trying to persuade people to vote to end Britain’s membership of the EU in the referendum.
Mr Streeting, who is a member of the Commons Treasury select committee, has asked Mr Schulz to investigate whether the spending is a breach of EU rules, which state groups must ‘carry out their duties as part of the activities of the Union’.
He has also accused Mr Farage of having double standards for using the money while vehemently arguing the government should not be able to use public money to campaign to stay in the EU.

Mr Streeting said: ‘Nigel Farage has a catalogue of questions to answer about whether he is spending taxpayers’ money on his campaign and breaching European Parliament rules.
‘Mr Farage has already criticised David Cameron over the use of public funds in the referendum campaign, so any suggestion that Ukip has bankrolled his anti-EU tour with European taxpayers’ money must be thoroughly investigated by the Parliament’s authorities.
‘Perhaps Nigel Farage will now rule out using any further EFDD funding for his anti-EU campaign?’ An EFDD spokesman said last night: ‘The EU and political groups spend billions on pro-EU propaganda. ‘They cannot complain when elected MEPs facilitate public knowledge and debate on how the EU “works”.
‘There’s no such thing as EU money. In the UK it comes from taxpayers – many of whom are eurosceptic and deserve to be represented and have their voices heard. Schulz and Co may disagree.’

Hi,
since The Times went and his behind a pay-wall I have not bought a copy, on average I purchase one a week until then and up until a few years ago I had it delivered daily. Like many I know it has largely dropped off of my radar since it decided to hide itself. I appreciate that they have, unlike The Telegraph, failed to find a way to make the internet pay – The Telegraph having set itself up as a marketing organisation and in many ways lost sight of competent journalism in favour of selling books and travel particularly.
The articles from The Times placed on this blog are usually mailed to me by journalist contacts with the article in full or I call them and ask them to send me the full article – the following is just a snippet in passing and not worth reading the full article so I have used the abbreviated version to bring it to your attention.
It is surprising that Richard Desmond did not foresee Ukip misusing his donation when he acts as their promotion agent and has all but turned his squalid little paper into the Ukip in house Beano!

The newspaper proprietor Richard Desmond was “furious” after part of his £1 million donation to Ukip was allegedly used to pay back a six-figure loan from another wealthy individual.
Senior party sources claimed yesterday that before the general election in May, Andrew Reid, the party’s then treasurer, called in a loan of about £200,000 that he had made to Ukip, subsequently repaid to him by the party.
The decision, made after Mr Desmond, owner of the Express titles, pledged the seven-figure sum, left him “unimpressed”, according to party figures. Mr Reid, a millionaire solicitor who has stepped down
It would seem Andrew Reid became treasurer to ensure his loan was repaid and has subsequently stepped down – just as Stuart Wheeler would seem to have made himself treasurer before him, to ensure Ukip did not spirit away his donations to the far from trustworthy party leadership!
Talking of vanishing donors you will no doubt remember Aaron Banks who has now gone off on his own with a seemingly well funded if very unsound operation trying to promote Leave_The_EU in the upcoming referendum and as for Paul Sykes he seems to have vanished completely apart from claims from some quarters that he has ‘caught’ religion and taken up Buddhism!

Hi,
its not just individuals leaving Ukip & Nigel Farage’s behaviour, it includes MEPs, Councillors, NEC members, sponsors & backers!
Names like Stuart Wheeler, Paul Sykes, Aaron Banks and the like seem little more than a distant memory as far as Ukip are concerned!
Perhaps he should pay closer attention to the media:
More people have joined Labour since Jeremy Corbyn became leader than are in the Lib Dems
The membership gain also outstrips the total membership of Ukip Jeremy Corbyn More people have joined the Labour Party since Jeremy Corbyn was elected leader than the total membership of the Liberal Democrats, party figures suggest.
The latest numbers released by Labour show that 62,000 people have joined it in the week since Saturday 12 September.
This compares to 61,456 people who are members of the Liberal Democrats, according to figures last released in June.
The number is also significantly more than the 47,000 people who are members of Ukip, whose membership also grew dramatically during the previous parliament. It could also soon surpass the 67,000 membership of the Green Party.
Over 15k join Labour in 24 hours after Corbyn wins Campbell urges sign-ups to vote against Corbyn More than 15,000 people joined the party in the 24 hours directly after Mr Corbyn’s victory. Total party membership, which is still rising fast, is now around 380,000.
The figure is approaching the 400,000 figure recorded at the 1997 election – though the party previously had as many as a million members in the 1950s.
More than 100,000 people paid £3 to register as party supporters during the leadership election, many to vote for Mr Corbyn.
After his victory party officials had hoped that many would sign up as full members.
“I hope they can come with us on the journey to the election in 2020,” newly elected Deputy Leader Tom Watson told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show.
“Let’s get these new members involved in campaigning, helping relay our roots in communities, being involved in a digital revolution in the party that allows members to feel that they’re more included in the decisions we make.”
Mr Corbyn was elected as Labour leader by a landslide of nearly 60 per cent of members, supporters, and affiliates.
During the Labour leadership campaign Mr Corbyn spoke to packed halls of supporters.

Will Barnes’ resignation Is Just One Example Of The Drift From Ukip and With Reasons, which he clearly states!

Hi,
it is becoming ever more clear that the internal squabbling and lack of leadership of any ethical calliber in Ukip is leading to something of a melt down.
We have seen MEPs drift away from the cause, the chairman of Ukip Ireland has quit, members of the NEC have left the party and there is a near rebellion amongst many long term members.
Meanwhile as Will Barnes states below the party leadership has lost sight of its once ‘claimed’ principles, which were obviously only presented for expediency, have been ditched to promote populism increasingly based upon overt racism and xenophobia – as Will Barnes states: this obsession with immigrants to try to restore Ukip’s flagging cause is likely to prove immensly damaging to the Leave_The_EU Campaign as Nigel Farage seeks any personal publicity/notoriety regardless of the damage he does our Country.
As Will Barnes states: ‘he is not alone in quitting Ukip’!

“I am extremely relieved that justice and common sense have finally prevailed in this high profile and particularly ill-judged case that has finally been discontinued by the CPS for lack of evidence.
I am extremely grateful to my excellent team of top lawyers, Mr Graham Atkins of Atkins Thomson Solicitors, Mr Stephen Vullo QC and Michael Wolkind QC for this just outcome.
At the same time, I would like to reiterate that this case, taken as a result of malicious accusations by Gerard Batten MEP, who has, for more than 4.5 years, caused me immeasurable stress and further deterioration of my health.
In my view the Police and the CPS should have never taken action.
I also miss my opportunity to air my views in court, and to have my team cross examine Batten.
I trust that the CPS and the Metropolitan Police will be less inclined to spend limited public money pursuing maliciously motivated cases.”
Jasna Badzak
MY COMMENTS:
I trust that Gerard Batten will be prosecuted, together with his associates in his criminal behaviour – I look forward to Ukip having the integrity to demand the resignation of all who have been associated with his malicious, dishonest and deeply damaging behaviour.
Politics may be a dirty game but Ukip has sunk below contempt to have colluded in this case and I look forward to Jasna Badzak’s appeal of the earlier pack of lies concocted by Gerard Batten and others as a pre-emptive strike to try to shelter their own criminality as alleged and reported, in good faith, to what would seem to have been corrupt police officers and brought before a Barrister acting as a Judge who corrupted due process it would seem, in collusion with Batten, his associates and Police.
I incline to the opinion that it may be wise of Gerard Batten, Annabelle Fuller, Nigel Farage – Reardon, Galvin and Gledhill and others who are named in legal documents as being implicated, to consider applying for political asylum in Syria either with Bashar al-Assad or ISIS as a safe haven from British justice!
I shall shortly be publishing the legal papers, which I have on the matter, as presented by Mr Graham Atkins of Atkins Thomson Solicitors, Mr Stephen Vullo QC and Michael Wolkind QC on behalf of Jasna Badzak. The documentation that names and shames Gerard Batten and his duplicitous cronies which have been accepted to implicate them imn corruption, racism, behaviour likely to incite racial hatred, malicious prosecution and misuse of over £1/2M of public funds – or so it would seem from the documentation which will follow!
May I suggest that, in the meantime, you read up on the facts presented on this blog and particularly the Lee Jasper interview, published here in full, and the details from Louise Menche’s excellent ‘Unfashionista’ blog, shortly no doubt to feature in her well informed column in The Sun newspaper.
I have held off publishing to date to give the various media the material and a head start – I do know of a number of journalists who have much of the story and are working on a full exposee backed by the legal facts and documents!
More details will follow.

and it seems he and his Ukip cult are still addressing the wrong question with very little accurate information about the benefits of a Leave-The-EU campaign and even less detail basing the entire strategy on the racist epithet of xenephobia and the narrow values of cashing in on the collapse of the BNP and the aims of organisations like the EDL and Nationalism. as opposed to the principles of patriotism and British values – having failed in the General Election to establish any significant presence at Westminster beyond a Tory turncoat who has little in common with Ukip’s squabbling leadership – the sexual antics of the party’s senior members which Crowther is frantically eMailing to suppress leakage of and the loss of MEPs that was so clearly predicted!
The Remain-In-The-EU campaign must be crowing with delight that Nigel Farage has lent his name and his undiciplined Ukip rabble to the Leave-The-EU cause!

300 meetings and counting — European Union referendum campaign
The in/out referendum on the UK’s European Union membership will take place by 2017.
“It was taken during the General Election at a moment when UKIP was being demonised and it is being dragged out to coincide with our launch”.
“It is clear that only UKIP offers voters in Gloucestershire the alternative between the remote, privileged and out of touch Bullingdon Club elite in charge of the Conservative Party, and an extreme left wing Labour Party soon to be led by Jeremy Corbyn and members of the Militant Tendency, who brought the great city of Liverpool to its knees back in the 1980s”.
But Mr Farage said his name was not mentioned in the polling, and accused “soft Conservative Eurosceptics” of trying to damage him.
Mr Farage confirmed earlier this week that he will not seek designation for himself or his party as official leaders of the No campaign but said he was ready to “work with anybody” in the battle for withdrawal – including the No campaign set up at Westminster and the Know group launched by business figures including Ukip donor Arron Banks.
He insisted Mr Corbyn’s election as Labour leader was now “all but certain”, and argued that his influence could be decisive.
Nigel Farage held another event in Westminster this morning to announce the dates of his “Say No – Believe in Britain” tour, through which he hopes to drum up support for a Brexit.
Mr Farage said he expected Mr Corbyn, an experienced left-wing Megapixel that keeps taken aback the following formation along with climb from rank easlily recluse to actually sexy best among the Labour choice, appeared to be identical to him basically because they both impressed everyone out your “Westminster village”. In fact, the opposite: I’ll work with absolutely anyone for us to get a No vote in this referendum’.
‘If people are put off by what they’ve heard this morning well I can’t do much about that. “They have seen Greece trampled upon, they see a transatlantic trade treaty which they are anxious could threaten the viability of the NHS”.
‘I accept not everyone is going to think Ukip is fantastic or I’m fantastic…but that’s why we need the centre left – whether it’s Corbyn or somebody else – appealing to those voters as well’.
“A subset of that is can we control our own borders or not, and that I think will be the dominating issue of the campaign”.
“The first is this basic point about self government and democracy”.
Nigel Farage So Clearly Exposed As Un-Trustworthy & Inept, as the media are more frequently exposing and as denounced by one of his more, until recently, loyal partners in crime, Douglas Denny
~~~~~~~~~~#########~~~~~~~~~~
.
Hi,
it must be particularly gaulling for Nigel Farage that this cartoon, showing that the media has seen through his paper thin self publicity and have clearly got the message of his being no ‘Superman’ in a cape but just a silly little man in a seedy spivs shabby chique coat, made fashionable as a spin off of the ‘Teddy Boy’ era when Saville Row’s aim to issue an Edwardian style of long jackets and were gazzumped by their own cutters and workshops in the East End slums of London.
Nigel Farage is shown in the cartoon as more akin to the insecure tantrums of Kim Jong-Un(hinged), and all in public circulation the day before Ukip’s anniversary, having been founded 22 years ago on 03-Sep-1993.
Even his staggeringly dishonest and corrupt erstwhile fixer Douglas Denny has once again denounced him – such a pity Douglas Denny lacks the integrity and backbone to expose the truth in full; of the corruption, fraud, bullying, rigging and profligacy Nigel Farage has been so closely involved in, using useful idiots like Denny, John Moran, John Whittaker, David Bannerman, Mark Croucher, John Ison, David Lott, Annabelle Fuller, Mick McGough, Christopher Gill, Gerard Batten and the like as his mouthpieces and fixers.
(Farage must be aware that some of his worms have turned!)
I guess it is hardly surprising that a little man like Denny lacks the backbone and ethics to tell the truth as he was so involved in the corruption and huge sums of money that seem to have unaccountably spiritted away (trousered?) by Nigel Farage and his direct cronies, that he may fear for his own liberty!
It is quite surprising that in 22 years Ukip have achieved so staggeringly little, relative to the colossal amount of money they have had, for Britain other than the enrichment and patform Nigel Farage has achieved for himself and the enrichment of the unsavoury clique he has gathered around him to prop up his ineptitude as a politician, bereft of clear and sound, ethical and workable policies – dependent on populism – he is to Britain as Alex salmon and Nicolla Sturgeon are, just as Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Jack Straw and thwe present leadership contenders are to the Labour Party – catastrophicly divisive.
Even the media are finally plucking up the courage to point out that despite Ukip garnering just under 4M votes dotted around the country Nigel Farage is very much a ‘marmite’ character liked by a vociferous minority yet reveiled and held in contempt by the vaste majority – so much so that the General Election was, like all other domestic elections, an abject failure for Ukip and for Nigel Farage even more so having had his 8th. failure to get elected as an MP. His unpopularity is so dangerous and divisive for these United Kingdoms many now realise his involvement in the upcoming EU Referendum may well be the most damaging input to the Campaign to Leave_The_EU, causing many who would vote for the proposition to reconsider their stance and either abstain or vote against!
I note in the Adams cartoon in The Daily Telegraph (Wed 2nd Sept), it is clear the news media have Nigel “sussed” exactly.
It was always the danger of having a dictatorial leader that he would lead in a manner to enhance his own image rather than join in with the larger and far better organised ‘NO’ campaign for the greater good of the EU -OUT cause.
By being so self-centred, by having no response or answers to the referendum in terms of party policy, by denying and ignoring the obvious fundamental changes which have now occurred in British politics with the announcement of the referendum, …this has adversely affected the very rationale of UKIP’s existence and what it stands for as per the UKIP constitution. It is clear Nigel Farage has not thought it out. UKIP’s very future as a political party is thrown into doubt: for what can UKIP do in British politics after the referendum? What then is the point of UKIP? I believe UKIP events have left UKIP behind, and as a party it has therefore now become defunct…obsolete.
Nigel has never addressed the main issue which has always been the Achilles Heel of UKIP – what to do in the event that a government actually does give the British people a referendum for being IN or OUT of the EU. Such a referendum is precisely what I and most others in UKIP have been campaigning for in the last sixteen years or more that I have been inside UKIP, and longer outside of UKIP before that.
The Conservatives having now conceded that crucial referendum have, in doing so, cut the legs from under Nigel and his non-policies, thereby crippling UKIP.
UKIP did have a minor role to play in the lead up to the referendum – but only if the Leader Nigle Farage had accepted UKIP being a part of the ‘NO’ campaign – which will gain momentum in due course. He has foolishly rejected that for the sake of his own vanity, hence the NO campaign will leave Nigel and UKIP behind in it’s dust-wake as it forges ahead with good funding and high-powered people to speak on the ‘NO’ campaign’s behalf. Nigel has cut himself and UKIP off from this vital role…. a very stupid decision in my opinion.
Nigel Farage of Ukip is A Sad Addict to applause & A Happy Drunkard manipulated and controlled by money & parasites!
Following Farage reveals the Ukip inner circle
This is a timely and entertaining story of a man addicted to applause, not alcohol.
By Tim Wigmore
On the morning of 8 May Nigel Farage called a press conference at the Botany Bay Hotel on the cliffs of Kent. He was announcing his resignation as leader of the UK Independence Party. A few hours earlier he had failed to win in Thanet South, and he had repeatedly said he would resign if he did not become an MP. “I have never ever broken my word before,” he told journalists, “so I am very unlikely to start now.”
The promise lasted barely 72 hours. On the Monday after the general election, it was announced that Ukip’s National Executive Committee had unanimously rejected his resignation. In Following Farage, the journalist Owen Bennett explains what would have awaited Farage if he had made good his pledge – life as “an absent father; a big-time drinker whose friends were now on mineral water; a seven times failed parliamentary candidate”.
The book claims to focus on Farage, but it offers more valuable insights into those in his inner circle, who form a changing cast. Few will have heard of many of these, yet it is they who allow Farage to exercise the overwhelming power he does in the party. There are the multimillionaires who bankroll Ukip and are fiercely loyal to its leader. Richard Desmond hasn’t given Daily Express staff a cost-of-living pay rise for seven years, but donated £1m to Ukip. Arron Banks promised Ukip £100,000, was called a nobody by William Hague and was so pricked that he promptly gave £1m instead. Most amenable to Bennett – though that’s not saying much – is the octogenarian spread-betting tycoon Stuart Wheeler, who has a “class” and “decency” the others lack.
Then there are the loyal minions. Annabelle Fuller started working for Farage at 22 and became his “gatekeeper”, until an MEP used parliamentary privilege to accuse him of having an affair with her. Three months later, Fuller turned up at a party to celebrate Ukip’s victory in the European Parliament elections, claiming Farage had invited her. His wife, Kirsten, promptly demanded that she leave. Fuller, who had suffered from depression, tried to take her own life, taking an overdose and slitting her wrists. Over lunch a fortnight later, she told Bennett that she felt like “Nigel’s mother” (though she is 18 years younger than he is). One is left feeling sorry for the way she was written out of history. Farage’s first autobiography credited her “perceptiveness and goodwill”; his latest did not mention her at all.
Perhaps the most intriguing figure in the book is Ukip’s strategist Raheem Kassam, adviser on “shock and awful” tactics for the party’s election campaign. Like many in British politics, Kassam was obsessed with America, but few others derive inspiration from the Tea Party. After Farage raised the issue of migrants with HIV in the leaders’ debate on TV, he briefed journalists that the move was part of its shock-and-awe strategy. To Douglas Carswell, now Ukip’s sole MP, it was “simply awful”.
Unlike Robert Ford and Matthew Goodwin’s 2014 book, Revolt on the Right, Following Farage does not amount to a serious analysis of the causes of Ukip’s success, but nor does it claim to be. Based on Bennett’s two years of reporting on Ukip – for the Hertfordshire Mercury, the Daily Express and the Daily Mirror – it sets out to give “an idea of what it is like to report on, drink with, laugh at, and even, at times, defend the People’s Army”. In that, it succeeds: the description of the protesters at Ukip’s conference who labelled the party “racist” but couldn’t explain why is especially telling.
Not that the book is without faults. So much has been written about Farage, not least by himself, that revelations are elusive here, though we learn that he identifies as “a happy drinker, not a sad drinker” – and of an American fan who offered him cocaine and “my girl Luscious”, but was politely turned down. Perhaps reflecting the pressure in getting the work published so soon after the election defeat, Bennett occasionally slips into cliché. And some of his attempts at self-effacement feel a little overdone. Taking a selfie with Farage, Bennett berates himself for his “I’m-having-a-drink-with-the-leader-of-a-political-party-because-I’m-a-reporter-for-a-national-newspaper-so-I-must-be-very-important-and-wonderful-look-at-me-Mummy-I’m-doing-so-fucking-well-for-myself vibe”.
Still, this is a timely and entertaining story of a man addicted to applause, not alcohol. Stepping down for good would have made for a neater end, but, as Bennett concludes: “[L]eaving him in his smoke-filled office to deal with an internal power struggle of his own making is a far more appropriate way to stop following Farage.”
