Ukip Abusing the Police & Justice system As Part Of Enforcement for their own gain, to suppress facts about Ukip, as a part of their Modus Operandi.

.

Hi,

Yet another case of Ukip using the police in an effort to intimidate and threaten a member of the public for daring to publicise facts about Ukip.

I appreciate this article is somewhat dated but there is no statute of limitations on abuse of the police process for gain that I know of and this is far from an isolated incident!

Such abuse of the police and Justice by Ukip is in fact all too common, whether through the Courts as with Jasna Badzak and also Nikki Sinclaire, both harassed by the police and charged, based on questionable complaints made by Ukip.

Just as I was lied about by Mark Croucher, Clive page and Paul Nuttall, as shown when their efforts to abuse the Court procedures and Justice to extort over £100,000 from me, their case was dismissed and I was discharged with costs awarded in my favour – costs, that I might add, Ukip have been too dishonest and devious to honour, in a display of contempt for The British Courts and British Justice.

Gerard Batten also lied to the police in an effort to bankrupt me and after being questioned under caution for almost 3 hours, there again the case was thrown out, this time by the police who realised he was telling lies and trying to invent a case against me, having boasted to associates in Brussels that he was going to bankrupt me and silence me once and for all.

Gerard Batten’s actions against me would seem to be all too similar to his claims made regarding Jasna Badzak!

Just imagine what these United Kingdoms would be like were these corrupt charlatans to get any kind of power or authority at the upcoming General Election – it looks like the first casualty would be freedom of speech and the second casualty would be the indipendence of the police as a part of controlling the judicial process.

There are many other cases like the one below – as examples of Ukip’s modus operandi!

Green Party activist visited by police over Ukip tweet

13-May-2014
posted by Rory MacKinnon in Britain

Free speech under threat as comments were ordered to be removed

OUTRAGED Green Party peer Jenny Jones condemned yesterday a police visit to the home of an activist who used Twitter to expose Ukip’s racist policies as “bully boy tactics.”

Ms Jones is writing to Home Secretary Theresa May after police were sent to doorstep Green Party member Michael Abberton at his Cambridge home on behalf of a thin-skinned Ukip councillor.

Mr Abberton revealed that officers visited on Saturday in connection with a tongue-in-cheek graphic he had tweeted last week titled “10 reasons to vote for Ukip.”

The “reasons” — ranging from their pledges to scrap maternity leave and holidays to raising income tax for 88 per cent of the population — were supplemented with links to Ukip materials.

Officers asked Mr Abberton to remove the tweet and ordered him not to tweet about their visit.

The activist removed the tweet as a gesture of goodwill but unmasked the intimidation attempts on his blog, writing: “A complaint had been made but with no legal basis. Not a police matter. So why did they come to my home in the middle of a Saturday afternoon?

“Why would a political party, so close to an election, seek to stop people finding out what its policies are or its past voting record?

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman confirmed that a Ukip councillor had taken “exception” to the tweet and filed a complaint on Friday.

“Inquiries were made as to whether any offences had been committed under the Representation of the People Act but none were revealed and no further action was taken,” he said.

The spokesman said it was “certainly not the advice” of police not to tweet about such visits.

“This is not 1930s Germany,” he said.

But the Green’s peer Ms Jones was far from satisfied, telling the Morning Star that she intended to raise the matter with the Home Secretary.

Ms Jones said the officers’ decision to go doorknocking was “absolutely astonishing.

“It sounds horrific,” she said.

“It’s all about freedom of speech. As a politician I know there are terrible things people say about me and you just have to live with it.

“The police need to understand that there’s no role for this unless there’s actual abuse.”

And Green Party leader Natalie Bennett added: “This is a very disturbing occurrence.

“Just the sheer fact of the visit is deeply damaging to free speech and is going to intimidate a lot of people thinking about whether they really are free to speak their mind.”

Ukip Cambridgeshire group council leader Paul Bullen — a magistrate in Huntingdon and Cambridgeshire’s Family Proceedings Court — denied all knowledge of the affair, adding that he “could not see” his fellow Ukip councillors making such a complaint.

He repeatedly declined to say whether he would ask them whether they had been involved, stressing instead that he knew “absolutely nothing.”

“If I looked at every bit of mud-slinging against Ukip in the last three months, I’d spend my whole life on the internet,” he said.

Earlier this month the right-wing party’s would-be Stockport councillor Harry Perry was suspended over a series of tweets asserting that “Islam is evil” and Muslim children were the “devil’s kids,” that Pakistan should be “nuked” and that gay, lesbian and bisexual people were an “abomination before God.”

Ukip Enfield candidate William Henwood told British comedian Lenny Henry via Twitter in March to “emigrate to a black country” and compared Islam with “the Third Reich, strength through violence against the citizens.”

It does seem to be more than coincidence particularly when you consider the various examples.

Police ask blogger to remove tweet about Ukip

Police have asked a blogger to remove a tweet that fact-checked Ukip policies but did not break any laws after receiving a complaint from a Ukip councillor, prompting concern over attempts to stifle debate.

Michael Abberton was visited by two Cambridgeshire police officers on Saturday. He was told he had not committed any crimes and no action was taken against him, but he was asked to delete some of his tweets, particularly a tongue-in-cheek one on 10 reasons to vote for Ukip, such as scrapping paid maternity leave and raising income tax for the poorest 88% of Britons.

Abberton, a Green party member who writes a blog on science and green politics, described the incident on his Axe of Reason blog.

“The police explained that I hadn’t broken any law – there was no charge to answer and it really wasn’t a police matter.

“They asked me to ‘take it down’ but I said I couldn’t do that as it had already been retweeted and appropriated, copied, many times and I no longer had any control of it (I had to explain to one of the officers what Twitter was and how it worked). They said that they couldn’t force me to take it down anyway.”

However, to show goodwill Abberton removed all instances of the offending tweet.

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “A Ukip councillor came across a tweet which he took exception to. The name of the person on the tweet was identified and that individual was spoken to. We looked at this for offences and there was nothing we could actually identify that required police intervention. Clearly, the councillor was unhappy about the tweets. If every political person was unhappy about what somebody else said about their views, we would have no politics.”

As for being told not to tweet about the visit, the spokesman added: “I don’t know if he’d have been told that. It’s certainly not the advice I would have given him. A gentleman has a right to free speech – absolute total right to free speech – we can’t tell people what they can and can’t say on the internet, as long as it’s within the law. We certainly don’t go to people’s houses and say: ‘You can’t tweet about this’. This is not 1930s Germany.”

On his blog, Abberton made it clear that the two police officers were extremely professional and polite, but he did wonder why they had visited him at all.

“It wasn’t until after they left that I questioned why they had visited me in the first place. A complaint had been made but with no legal basis. Not a police matter. So why did they come to my home in the middle of a Saturday afternoon? Also, seeing as my profile doesn’t have my location – how did they know my address, or even the town I live in? … Why would a political party, so close to an election, seek to stop people finding out what their policies are or their past voting record? And is it not a matter for concern that a political party would seek to silence dissent and debate in such a manner?”

Julian Huppert, the Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, who was contacted by Abberton, said he was awaiting a detailed response from the police.

“It seems astonishing for the police to get involved, there was nothing abusive or threatening in the tweets so I do want to know why they acted, and I want to know why the police told Abberton not to tweet about the visit.”

Huppert said he was pleased that Ukip’s policies were coming under scrutiny.

Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green party, said: “This police action is both disturbing and surprising. That an apparently general complaint from a political party about not liking what was said about them could have led to a police visit that many would find intimidating is an extremely serious incident that demands immediate investigation. Free speech is a precious right that we must defend.”

Bennett said the party’s only member in the House of Lords, Jenny Jones, would write to Theresa May, the home secretary, to ask her to investigate.

“What a waste of police time, energy and resources,” Jones said. “Their job is to investigate crime and catch criminals, not restrict free speech.”

You are not allowed to read this blog

I’ve written about different things and different people, but surprisingly for a blog (which, let’s face it, is pretty much the archetype of vanity publishing) I’ve never written anything about me.

Until now.

Yesterday afternoon as I was debating whether to continue watching some lame James Caan movie about midget submarines, I was disturbed by a police officer peering through my lounge window. I do live on the ground floor, so not as surprising as you may have imagined. I went to the door and there were two constables there. The first thing they said was that there was nothing to be worried about, they just wanted to come in for a chat. Not something that has ever happened to me before, but I showed them in and sat them on the sofa.

They wondered if I was the Michael Abberton on Twitter and I said yes. Then they said this was in relation to a complaint that had been made by a certain political party in relation to tweets I had published about them and one tweet in particular which talked about ten reasons to vote for them. The PC wanted to know if I had made that poster. I explained that I hadn’t but it had been doing the rounds on Twitter for a while, and so I had decided to see if these claims could be verified.

In doing this I set myself strict rules – nothing second hand, nothing from a newspaper, everything from an official party source as much as possible. Some I could find no basis for, and I highlighted these in bold. The only thing I quoted which did not come from an official party source was the parliamentary voting record. I explained all this to the police in some detail – also that on several occasions I had simply sent people the link to the official party manifesto.

The police explained that I hadn’t broken any law – there was no charge to answer and it really wasn’t a police matter.

They asked me to ‘take it down’ but I said I couldn’t do that as it had already been retweeted and appropriated, copied, many times and I no longer had any control of it (I had to explain to one of the officers what Twitter was and how it worked). They said that they couldn’t force me to take it down anyway.

I asked if I could tweet about the visit. The straight answer was ‘no’, as this might appear prejudicial in light of the upcoming election and the police must appear to remain neutral. But they couldn’t stop me from doing so, as I had Freedom of Speech. Incredulously, I said, “…but you must realise how this looks!” One shrugged, the other looked embarrassed.

As they were getting up to leave I asked for clarification – was this in relation to possible copyright infringement – and they were very clear on that point. It wasn’t, and they didn’t see how it could be. And even if it were, again it would not be a police but a civil matter.

I’d like to be absolutely clear – the police officers were extremely professional and polite and I couldn’t fault their behaviour in any way. But it wasn’t until after they left that I questioned why they had visited me in the first place. A complaint had been made but with no legal basis. Not a police matter. So why did they come to my home in the middle of a Saturday afternoon? Also, seeing as my profile doesn’t have my location – how did they know my address, or even the town I live in?

About fifteen minutes after they left I received a threatening tweet from a party member I had had an exchange with earlier in the day. Though appearing to be no more than a party supporter, he seemed to know that the police had been involved. I copied the tweet and sent it to the police.

I contacted some people I’d had exchanges with involving this party. One of them put me in touch with a solicitor and a journalist and advised that I contact my MP, which I’ve done. And whilst acknowledging the fact that the police had no right to censure my posts, in order to show goodwill I removed all instances of the poster where I’d sent it @someone, and have not tweeted about the visit or about that political party since.

Nevertheless, the story has gotten out and it seems people do feel (rightly) outraged by it.

If I had been abusive in any way, if I had been dishonest in any respect or if any of the sources had been fake rather than official party links, I could in some way understand it. But all I had done is promote the party policy using links to their own sources – no editorialising, no commenting. And in fairness highlighted those allegations I could find no evidence for. One of the sources was their current manifesto!

Why would a political party, so close to an election, seek to stop people finding out what their policies are or their past voting record? And is it not a matter for concern that a political party would seek to silence dissent and debate in such a manner?

You will note that a simple search on Twitter brings one to the following posting:

10 Great Reasons to vote . I don’t know who made it – so I referenced it from official websites

Married UKIP politician, 70, accused of taking young female researcher to a strip club, threatening to ‘trash’ her reputation if she told and then pressuring her to resign

  • Former UKIP researcher accuses MEP of sacking her after strip club visit
  • Alexandra Swann said she felt ‘deeply uncomfortable’ about Roger Helmer’s behaviour
  • Ms Swann claims Helmer brought her to the Manhattan bar in Brussels

By Paul Cahalan

A UKIP politician took his young female researcher to a strip bar and watched as a topless dancer cavorted in front of them, it was claimed last night.

Roger Helmer, a married MEP who is standing in next month’s Newark by-election, took Alexandra Swann, then 24, to the Manhattan bar in Brussels, she claims.

Miss Swann says she was made to feel ‘deeply uncomfortable’ by the 70-year-old’s behaviour, but felt unable to speak out for fear of losing her job.

Alexandra Swann, right, claimed that she was sacked as a researcher for UKIP after an MEP took her to a strip club

Miss Swann, a former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party youth wing who defected to UKIP in 2012, worked for Mr Helmer for five months that year while he was attending the European Parliament.

She claims she was later pressured by Mr Helmer to resign, and threatened by another UKIP member that her reputation would be ‘trashed’ if she ever spoke publicly about the strip bar.

Alexandra Swann said she was sacked by UKIP MEP Roger Helmer after he took her to a lap dancing club

Mr Helmer, who has been married twice and has children with his first wife, strongly denies the allegations and described Miss Swann as ‘a serial fantasist’.

Miss Swann began working for Mr Helmer in April 2012, said they visited the bar in September that year.

She added: ‘The bar was called Manhattan. I had never heard of it but now I know it is where a lot of MEPs go. There were scantily-clad women and they were dancing.

‘It was deeply uncomfortable, but what could I do? I loved my job.’

Miss Swann, now 26, said that straight after the UKIP conference in Basingstoke that year, Mr Helmer sacked her.

Last night Mr Helmer said: ‘I have a vague recollection of what she might be referring to.

‘After a meal with my staff, she wanted to have another drink and I took her to a bar. It became clear it was a bit of a dodgy bar, so we finished our beers and left. The detail is frankly a load of nonsense.’

Roger Helmer MEP said he had a 'vague recollection' of what Ms Swann was referring to and described it as 'frankly a load of nonsense'

To view the original article CLICK HERE
Roger Helmer’s comment is all too redolent of that of mandy Rice Davis in response to an earlier Conservative government after inapropriate behaviour:
“he would say that wouldn’t he”.
One needs to bear in mind a few things about this particular elderly fool who has shown his age makes it difficult for him to keep up, or perhaps his late night drinking in strip clubs may well be the cause for his inability to stay awake in the EU’s so called parliament:
But then again let us not forget his drinking habits with his chum, the convicted criminal Tom Wise, another of UKIP’s devotees, who Helmer fulsomely and aggressively defended.
Roger Helmer featured in the video clip puiblished by The News of The World that was part of the publicity exposing Tom Wise as a dishonourable criminal:
WISE, Tom 04 MEP
Roger Helmer was elected as a Tory MEP but announced his retirement as he felt he was too old for the job, however when he could not gift his position to his personal choice he withdrew his resignation and defected to UKIP! Clearly he felt his age more suited to UKIP and is currently standing as their candidate in the by-election in Newark at the age of 70.
Alexandra Swann, as a turncoat from the Tories also has he own problems not least of which is a massive insecurity and her own indiscretions to contend with:
as a 23 year old researcher for the Tories she was foolishly caught on camera by The Mirror on the lap of divorcee David Morris a 45 year old MP so clearly an age differential is of little consequence to her!
& her maturity is not enhanced by her personal message on line:
swann, aLEXANDRA 01
Tough a message neither as accurate or as revealing as that of Annabelle Fuller, who I gather is also touting her story around the media though I gather her £200K price tag, which I gather is her aim, is unlikely to be met and she has a very short window of opportunity as it will be greatly reduced shortly due to her investigation for theft and I gather false allegations of sexual assault that led to the finality of tyhe divorce of Andrew Bridgen!
However here is her crass, though accurate message:
FULLER, Annabelle 10A warning that Nigel Farage would have been sensible to heed.
“If Roger Helmer becomes UKIP’s first MP, I believe he alone will ensure that he is the last”.
As Roger Helmer’s employee and staff member stated See: CLICK HERE
This may of course prove grounds, to som,e to ensure the odious, bullying old bufoon is elected!
Already ity is clear that Roger Helmer typifies the long held belief that ‘There is no greater fool than an old fool’ and clearly the attentions of a young woman have led to his acting inappropriately, yet again!
.

Regards,

Greg_L-W..

The Great Ukip Racism Debate – Debunking the Six Main Myths

Posted: 06/05/2014 15:43

Is Ukip racist? Or is it merely a party that is especially attractive to what David Cameron once called “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists”?

Or, perhaps, is it neither? Has it been unfairly smeared and demonised? On Sunday, Ukip leader Nigel Farage told the BBC’s Andrew Marr he was “adamant that we’re a non-racist party”.

Guess what? Plenty of influential people on the liberal-left agree with him. Former Labour home secretary Jacqui Smith says she is “uneasy about the suggestions that they are racist and the implication that, therefore so are the likely Ukip voters”. Liberal Conspiracy blogger Sunny Hundal attacks those on the left “offering up blanket accusations of racism” aimed at Ukip. “Do the majority of Ukip voters endorse racism and is Ukip an openly racist movement?” asks academic Matthew Goodwin, author of a new book on the anti-Europe party. “No.”

In an attempt to shield Ukip from the charge of racism, these liberal-lefties have, wittingly or unwittingly, joined with both Farage and sections of the right-wing press to promulgate some pretty dodgy arguments, some pretty dangerous myths, that are worth tackling head on:

1) Only left-liberal, metropolitan-types in Hampstead think Ukip is racist

Not quite. A quarter of voters (27%), according to a recent YouGov poll, say Ukip is a party “with racist views” and “with many racist members”.

Only a quarter (26%) of voters give Ukip a clean bill of health and say Ukip is “not racist at all”. A pretty damning figure, I would argue. Meanwhile, a plurality of voters (35%) agreed Ukip wasn’t “racist”, in their view, but did “seem to attract some candidates or supporters with racist, extreme or odd views”.

Also, Michael Heseltine – who, last time I checked, was a Conservative peer and former Conservative cabinet minister – has said he believes Ukip is a racist party. Jeremy Hunt, a serving Conservative cabinet minister, has attacked Ukip for “attracting” racist candidates.

Oh, and the founder and former leader of Ukip, Dr Alan Sked, told the Sunday Times in September 2013 that, under Nigel Farage’s leadership, the party he created had become “anti-immigrant, anti-intellectual and racist”.

2) It’s unfair to blame Ukip as a whole for the racist comments of a tiny minority of candidates

First, is it really only a ‘tiny minority’? A few ‘rotten apples’? The last few weeks alone have revealed a bunch of Ukip candidates and activists who, among other things, told Lenny Henry to go and live in a ‘black country’; said the UK has a “pro Islamic” media; called Islam an “organised crime under religious camouflage”; “liked” the BNP on Facebook; described EDL members as “honest, normal people”; implied the case of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence had received disproportionate amounts of media coverage; suggested Nigerians were criminals; declared Mo Farah to be African and not British. As a Spectator blogger noted: “[T]he scandals are so frequent you have to conclude that it is not the rotten apple that needs throwing out but the whole stinking barrel.”

Second, it isn’t just a bunch of fringe figures in Ukip saying awful, bigoted stuff. Racism, xenophobia and anti-Muslim bigotry seems to be tolerated at the top, and not just the bottom, of the party. Why, after all, did Ukip’s leaders, and hundreds of members, “roar with laughter” and “clap” as comedian Paul Eastwood “took swipes at Indians, Muslims and Poles” at a gala dinner at the party’s spring conference in February?

In fact, consider the following four individuals and their remarks:

(a) Gerard Batten, Ukip’s chief whip and immigration spokesman, has demanded Britain’s Muslims sign up to a special code of conduct and called for a ban on the building of new mosques – which is a policy backed by both the BNP and the EDL.

(b) Godfrey Bloom, the party’s former economics spokesman, who served for almost a decade as a Ukip MEP and shared a flat with his friend and ally Farage, referred to the developing world as “bongo bongo land”.

(c) Lord Pearson, the senior Ukip peer and former party leader, has said the UK faces a “growing threat of Islamism” because “the Muslims are breeding ten times faster than us”. He added: “I don’t know at what point they reach such a number we are no longer able to resist the rest of their demands.”

(d) And, of course, then there is the party’s current leader, cheeky-chappy, beer-drinking, ‘regular guy’ Nigel Farage. Asked in a recent Guardian interview whether or not people should be “wary” of Romanian families moving into their street, the Ukip leader replied: “Well, of course, yeah.”

Change the word ‘Romanian’ to ‘Nigerian’ or ‘Indian’ or even ‘Jewish’ and ask yourself whether or not you’d consider Farage’s answer to be racist or not.

3) Romanian is a nationality not a race, so being rude about Romanians isn’t racist

Yes, it is actually. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), in its guidance on “racist and religious crime”, defines a “racial group” as “any group of people who are defined by reference to their race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin”. [Emphasis added.]

As it happens, even Farage agrees with this definition – when the Ukip leader was heckled and attacked by Scottish protesters on a visit to Edinburgh in May 2013, he described his opponents as “deeply racist with a total hatred for the English”.

Hello, kettle? This is pot. You’re black.

4) You can’t call Ukip racist as they have black and ethnic minority (BME) candidates and activists

This is what I’d call the political party’s equivalent of the ‘My best friend is black/gay/Jewish’ defence. And it is an equally hollow and absurd method of trying to deflect or rebut charges of racism.

Consider: the BNP has had both Sikh and Jewish members. Does anyone sane seriously believe this inoculates Nick Griffin’s gang from the charge of racism or anti-Semitism? Really?

(On a side note, the father of the Ukip candidate who denied his son was racist – despite the latter’s tweets about “foreigners and weirdos” and rape by “Asian boys” – on the grounds that he came home “at 10.30pm with a curry ” can’t be topped in terms of originality – or bizarreness.)

5) Ukip has gone out of its way to reject overtures from the far-right in Europe

So far, maybe. In today’s Telegraph, however, Geert Wilders, leader of Holland’s far-right Party for Freedom, predicts that Ukip will join his party and France’s National Front (FN) in a new ‘European Freedom Alliance’ in the wake of the Euro elections later this month. FN’s Marine Le Pen has said she could happily work with UKIP, with “open arms”, and declared Farage’s ideas and views “very similar” to those of her (far-right) party.

Then there is the Europe of Freedom and Democracy (EFD) group in the European Parliament, in which Ukip sits and of which Farage is co-chair. The EFD group includes representatives from a variety of unsavoury, immigrant-bashing, far-right parties, including the Danish People’s Party, the True Finns Party and Italy’s Lega Nord. Farage’s fellow co-chair, Francesco Speroni of Lega Nord, has described far-right terrorist and mass murderer Anders Breivik as someone whose “ideas are in defence of western civilisation”. Lega Nord leader Umberto Bossi has referred to non-white immigrants as “bingo bingos” and suggested the police should open fire on boats bringing African asylum-seekers to Italy. Does Farage have a view on Bossi? Or Speroni? Or his alliance with both?

6) To call Ukip the ‘BNP in blazers’ is unfair and unwarranted

Really? Then why has Farage called on BNP voters to “come and vote for us” and boasted of his pride in having “taken a third of the BNP vote directly from them”. Since when did the attracting of voters from a far-right, racist party become a source of pride?

As academics Heinz Brandenburg and Anders Widfeldt, authors of a recent study on the overlap between the BNP and Ukip, have pointed out: “Nobody has a more positive view of the BNP than UKIP voters, and nobody has a more positive view of UKIP than BNP voters.” They conclude: “[T]he BNP and UKIP fit rather neatly into separate subgroups of the same, extreme right, party family – the BNP into a more radical one and UKIP into a more moderate grouping.”

Also: why did the BNP approach Ukip in 2008 and propose forming a pact between the two parties – a potential alliance which Farage, to his credit, rejected? What made Ukip so attractive to the BNP high command? And what made the BNP so attractive to the two members of Ukip’s national executive committee who were in favour of the pact?

For the facts CLICK HERE

Is there any other mainstream party in the UK that the BNP has asked to do a deal with? And which has BNP sympathisers on its national executive committee?

In conclusion, whether or not Ukip is a racist party, rather than, say, a party containing racists, is a debate for the pedants and the literalists – the bigger questions are: what is it about Ukip that attracts so many racists and bigots in the first place? How do senior party figures justify their racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic comments? Why does Ukip sit in the European Parliament with race-baiting, Muslim-baiting parties? Why are BNP voters – and, previously, the BNP leadership – so keen on Ukip? Why did the EDL endorse Ukip? Why does Le Pen want to welcome Farage with “open arms” into her far-right, pan-European alliance?

To turn a blind eye to such questions is not just irresponsible but dangerous.

10 good reasons not to vote for Ukip

Nigel Farage may seem genial but his party is anything but. The polls tell us that many voters are tempted to vote Ukip at the next election, while others dismiss them as a joke – but the prospect of them gaining more power in Europe is no laughing matter

o Hugh Muir

o Tuesday 29 April 2014 19.04 BST

Nigel Farage
If the polls are right, and they probably are, legions of ordinary British people, decent in so many respects, will back Ukip in the forthcoming European elections.

Some will tick the Farage box because they believe the party to be the future, setting out with clarity our country’s political, social and economic future. Others will give their endorsement because they have come to despise the other parties and the establishment. Indeed Farage has been encouraging them to turn away from the political elite and to see Ukip as a new way of doing things.

There will be those, genuinely unhappy, who wish for tougher action on migration and a handbrake turn away from Europe. Both are hot-potato issues and Ukip serves up a mash more easily digestible than that available elsewhere.

And then there is the contingent that thinks some or none of these things but will vote for the party as a form of interactive entertainment. “That Farage, he’s a good bloke,” they will say. “You can have a laugh with him.”

Ukip will do well because it can best survive in the polluted atmosphere that engulfs debate about migration and Europe, but also because it’s a perfect vehicle for a protest vote. No one takes it very seriously. And that’s the sadness. Because Ukip isn’t and has never been much of a laughing matter. Here’s why …

1. Its stances are bonkers

It appears to dislike everything about the European parliament, except, of course, the money EU taxpayers make available to its representatives (of which more later). Anything born of the EU seems bad. Let’s consider some of the things that have been bad in the recent past. In the past few months Ukip has voted against updated rules on cab design and safety, which would make it easier for the drivers of lorries to spot pedestrians and cyclists.

Also against requirements that MEPs who draft legislation should publish which lobbyists they have met and their influence on the legislation. It opposed greater transparency for clinical trials data and greater protections for holidaymakers buying package holidays.

Also legislation to tackle money laundering and calls for greater public access to EU documents. Things are moving in the right direction, perhaps.

The 2010 manifesto, which Farage has called “drivel”, called for taxi drivers to be required to wear uniforms, dress codes for the theatre and for the Circle line on London’s underground to be made a circle again.

2. It has nasty friends in Europe

A2

Farage seems a laugh in that “hail fellow well met” way. But you can tell a lot by the friends he keeps. And some of the types he hangs out with in Brussels would be seen as a rough crowd here. Who are they? There are the figures in the xenophobic and rightwing Italian Northern League, the second largest grouping in the Europe of Freedom and Democracy group, which Farage chairs. Umberto Bossi, its founder, once called for illegal immigrants to be shot. Farage knows they can be a bit unreconstructed. He had to expel one of its MEPs from the group last year after racist comments about Cécile Kyenge, Italy’s first black minister. She was, said Mario Borghezio, more suited to being a “housekeeper” or a low-level council official than a minister and would impose African “tribal traditions” on Italy.
The True Finns are firm friends too. One of them collided with a spot of bother for floating the idea of mandatory armbands for foreigners to make it easier for police to identify them.
The Danish People’s party: more ghastlies. In 2002, MEP Morten Messerschmidt was one of a group convicted of racially motivated offences. Frank Vanhecke is there too. He’s the former leader of Belgium’s Vlaams Blok, the far-right party disbanded after a court said it broke anti-racist laws. He appeared at a student rally with the BNP’s Nick Griffin in 2010. None of them are as obviously clubbable as Nige and he may want shot of them after the election. But they have been his Euro-mates for a while.

3. It’s a magnet for unsavoury types here

Andre Lampitt

Domestically Ukip talks a good game. We only want respectable types, it says. But as Jeremy Hunt has pointed out, it does seem effortlessly able to attract – among the decent – a proportion of rum characters. When they say racist, Islamophobic or plain offensive things, Farage wields the stick. But even he must wonder why they pitch up on his party’s doorstep in the first place.
Andre Lampitt, we know. Having starred in the latest Ukip TV ad, he was outed for dismissing Ed Miliband as “a Pole”, asserting that Enoch Powell was right, Islam was Satanic and that Africans should be left to “kill themselves”. He has since been suspended. And then there was David Silvester, the councillor who attributed the winter floods to gay marriage. William Henwood popped up this week, calling for Lenny Henry, who seeks equality in the creative arts, to emigrate to “a black country”. These were outriders, perhaps. But what about fellow MEP Gerard Batten, who called for British Muslims to sign a special code of conduct promising not to engage in violent jihad. Farage said that wasn’t party policy.
But Batten’s still there, Ukip MEP for multicultural London. And would any other party have welcomed to a senior post Neil Hamilton, the disgraced poster boy of the cash for questions scandal? His election role has reportedly been downgraded, but he’s still deputy chair. At the weekend, he was on the BBC wearing his party hat and preaching the Faragian gospel. A strange choice to hoist on to the Ukip soapbox, but not the strangest. Is it worth mentioning that two of Ukip’s 2004 intake ended up in jail for EU expenses fraud? The party that isn’t like the other parties seems to be like the other parties after all.

4. It has rewarded offence

Link to video: Godfrey Bloom hits journalist Michael Crick with Ukip brochure
Recently the party has taken the stick to those who might tarnish its journey into the electoral mainstream. Perhaps that is because with favourable polls comes harsher scrutiny. But hitherto, it seemed to have little problem with those who caused outrage or offence. Poor Godfrey Bloom had to biff Michael Crick of Channel 4 News with a party brochure to get himself disciplined, but prior to that, the nonstop misogyny and references to aid being sent to Bongo Bongo Land were viewed benignly. In 2010 we encountered Paul Wiffen. He was London chairman of Ukip when he thought to hold forth on Community Care website, addressing those whose views were different. “You leftwing scum are all the same,” he said. “Wanting to hand our birthright to Romanian Gypsies who beat their wives and children into begging and stealing money they can gamble with, Muslim nutters who want to kill us and put us all under medieval Sharia law, the same Africans who sold their Afro-Caribbean brothers into a slavery that Britain was the first to abolish (but you still want to apologise for!).” Like Lampitt, he was suspended. And then he was selected as Ukip’s London North East candidate for the London assembly in 2012.
He did not win.

5. It hates the EU but cashes in

EU flag.
Nigel Farage claims he uses EU money to hasten its demise. Photograph: Getty Images/Laura Ronchi
The Times and Farage have tussled about all the money he claims from the European parliament, in addition to the average £83,000 salary. It is my entitlement, he says. I use EU money to hasten its demise. Much of the focus has been on the monthly fixed-rate allowance of £3,850 and whether it is used to fund his activities as an MEP or party work. But attention has also been paid to the fact that Farage is one of 38 British MEPs in line for a second EU pension, which could reap them £41,000 a year in addition to the basic EU fund.
“It is not a system that I defend but it is the system,” he told the Telegraph.
His take on the allowances, as revealed in the Guardian, is clear and may be instructive. Is this above board, he was asked. “I think I’ve kept just the right side of the line, albeit pushing right up to it,” he replied.
Everywhere contradictions. Last week Ukip’s patriotic People’s Army toured the country in a-Mercedes Benz.

6. Its MEPs are not exactly worker bees

Bumble bee
A busy bee, buzzing off to Brussels. Possibly. Photograph: Papilio/Alamy
Having been elected and having pledged to topple the EU from within, one might think the Ukipians would be assiduous attenders, the better to disparage and critique it. Instead, they are famed absentees.
This seems a badge of honour. They get elected to the European parliament, receive a salary and allowances for being members of the European parliament. And then restrict appearances there on the basis that regular attendances would lend the place legitimacy. Ukip’s deputy leader, Paul Nuttall, set out the position on his blog after his spotty record in the EU parliament was flagged up in the Telegraph.
“I’ll hold my hands up,” he said. “My attendance record is flaky to say the least. But so what?” Dispatched to Brussels, his focus is actually his UK fiefdom. “I treat Brussels with the contempt it deserves.”

7. It’s as vulnerable to special interests as any other party

Paul Sykes
Paul Sykes, Ukip party donor. Photograph: Peter Byrne/PA
Much of the criticism of what Farage calls the establishment elite boils down to influence and money. He says that the other parties are in hock to vested interests and that chimes. No one wants to see the political process skewed by interests with fat wallets. So what is one to think of the Ukip poster campaign? The multimillionaire Paul Sykes has been generous, as previously he was to the anti-EU Democracy Movement and to the Conservatives before he fell out with them. But the £1.5m publicity campaign – the most visible in the party’s history – is as much his as Ukip’s. He funded it. Prudent perhaps. One of Britain’s richest self-made men, he didn’t become rich by wasting his money. But if his input is that important, who calls the shots?

8. It speaks with forked tongues

Leave aside the now acknowledged mistake of featuring Lampitt in the party political broadcast. And the fact that another person described as an ordinary voter in a manifesto document turned out to be a party employee who works for Farage. And the fact that one man featured in the poster campaign turned out to be a migrant actor from Ireland. And the fact that former head of the British Army Lord Dannatt condemned the image of the British flag on fire. Consider the central implausibility of the central claim: that 26 million of the European unemployed are gunning for jobs in Britain. Two million from the total are British anyway. Consider that if an entity save for a political party enjoying exemption from the advertising code of conduct ran that misleading ad, it would have been forced to withdraw it.
Then consider this, from the Sun on 12 April. “In an article MoT fix axe fears (March 30) we quoted a letter from Ukip containing claims that thousands of MoT test centres could close under EU proposals forcing motorists whose cars fail to go to a different garage for repairs. We have been informed that no such EU proposals exist and are happy to set the record straight.”

9. Its only plan is Nigel

Nigel Farage
It’s that Ukip man again … Nigel Farage. Photograph: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images
Has there ever been a major party so dependent on one sellable character? Farage is, without question, the most dominant and effective party leader in national politics. Erase him from the canvas and what is left? EU stayaway Nuttall? “Liar and a cheat” Hamilton?
The cult of Farage is rivalled only in its potency by the cult of Boris, for like him, Farage is a vivid brand deployed to politics.
Both trade illusions. Boris projects slapstick and shambles when all the time beneath is ambitious focus and a keen-eyed grasp of modern politics. Farage is Everyman; all booze and fags and antennae for the cares and fears of ordinary people. This from the son of a stockbroker, with an often-lamented career in the City behind him; children all privately educated; prosperous product of a village upbringing in Kent.

10. It makes a sensible debate on Europe less likely

Quite the biggest achievement of Ukip has been to shape the ground on which we discuss two touchstone issues, Europe and migration. Both are complex. Both bring benefits and present challenges. But Ukip’s reductionist approach has made reasoned and nuanced discussion of both virtually impossible. And so, frightened of being eclipsed, and mindful that a simplistic answer will always trump a detailed one in the 24-hour news cycle, politicians in Farage’s slipstream distil their own arguments, minimising maturity and sacrificing logic. Those who present a reasoned argument are howled down or judged to have lost the argument. Perhaps the least amusing aspect of Farage is the impact he will have on parties other than his own.

Just read the rest of this blog site and you will realise why UKIP as it is with its vile racist associates, political corruption, all too typical political elite dishonesty, bullying, abuse of tax payers money, sociopathic leadership team and total lack of structure, gravitas or even an understanding let alone a plane put forward as a clear ‘Exit & Survival Strategy when it comes to Leaving_The_EU’.
Little wonder that after 21 years UKIP still proves to be an abject failure in domestic elections and is clearly dependent on being the protest vote of choice in EU elections!

Nigel Farage has bottled his by-election chance, and Ukip is over

John Rentoul
Wednesday 30 April 2014
FARAGE, Nigel 85 BILLBOARD 01
After Nigel Farage blew up his rocket on the launch pad at 8.05 this morning, today’s Prime Minister’s Questions became more important and less interesting.
But first let us pay our respects to the late UK Independence Party. It had a good run. There is a bit of fun still to be had. Today we have already had two opinion polls suggesting that it is going to win the largest share of votes in the European Parliament elections on 22 May by some margin. Ukip is nine or 11 points ahead with three weeks still to go, which has the makings of a landslide.
It may seem perverse to suggest, therefore, that the party is over. But I suggest that this is precisely what it is. Done with, finished, a footnote.
By failing to seize the party’s one chance to win a by-election, Farage has blown it. Not that “it” was ever a very good chance. Farage bottled the Newark by-election because he didn’t think he would win it. And if he couldn’t win it, there is no one else in Ukip who could. The best chance of achieving the “breakthrough” that is the holy grail for protest parties, which in this case would mean a handful of MPs at the next general election, would have been to establish the credibility of a bridgehead in the House of Commons before the general election.
I think we can now take it that Ukip will win one MP at the next election at most. That one MP might be Farage, standing in a Kent seat such as Folkestone, where he has connections, members and organisation. He would then be the Caroline Lucas of the next parliament and Ukip would fade away, apart from its large numbers of troublesome MEPs in the European Parliament.
The thing is that Ukip faces a challenge to its reason for existing after the next general election, whatever the result. If Cameron wins, he is committed to a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU in 2017, after which Ukip would have little purpose. If Ed Miliband wins, the Conservative Party in opposition is likely to become several degrees more Eurosceptic. Boris Johnson only this week restated his view that, if Cameron could not secure better terms of EU membership, he would vote to leave. Again, the need for a separate anti-EU party will be greatly diminished. And if the Liberal Democrats, through some tragic accident of the arithmetic, should find themselves out of government, there would not even be the need for a separate protest party any more.
So that is it, I think. There will be a lot of fizz, smoke and carousel music, but in three weeks’ time the Great Ukip Flying Circus will be in decline. Big social trends are against it. The economy is looking up, and people mind less about free movement of workers when they feel better off. Scepticism about the EU has ebbed. YouGov now consistently finds that, even if there were a referendum now on existing terms of membership, people would vote to stay in.
Which left us with Prime Minister’s Questions. Back to politics as usual. The Ukip-free House of Commons debated the sale of the Royal Mail. Miliband complained about “a rip-off of taxpayers”. Cameron responded with a history lesson, quoting Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock on 1980s privatisations.
Miliband had a good argument and an effective debating point, quoting Brian Binley, the Tory chairman of the Business select committee, who had described the way the sell-off was managed as “unethical” and who was nodding in agreement on the back-benches behind Cameron’s blind spot.
Cameron had a reasonable argument – Labour had tried to sell the Royal Mail and this government had succeeded – and an effective diversionary tactic, pointing out that Miliband dared not mention the economy, jobs or the deficit, because they were all coming good.
The Prime Minister could not say what he really thought, which was that Vince Cable might have been taken for a fast one by some of those spivs in the City, but that the risks of failing to unload the shares onto the market were worse than those of seeing them snapped up and a rise in price, showing an instant profit.
But those are the sort of calculations that government politics are all about, the sort of thing that Ukip would like to wish away. Returning to real politics will be duller, but more important.

Personally I believe John Rentoul has managed to get this largely wrong and it may just be one of the politically astute actions Nigel Farage has ever made as it seems likely he would have failed to get elect5ed in Newsrk and that would very certainly have been the end of UKIP as if they failed to get their ONLY known personality elected after what can be expected to be an excellent result in the EU elections based on UKIP being used as a protest vote against the recognised political elite who the electorate perceive, not entirely inaccurately, to have betrayed Britain and our peoples.
One reason it could be expected that Nigel Farage would fail to be elected in Newark is that IF he had taken on the challenge it is almost certain that the Tories would have fielded Boris Johnson in as their candidate
The danger for UKIP now is that whenever and wherever Farage tries to get a seat in Westminster the Tories will field their biggest hitter against him and being something of a one man band elected as the public’s protest vote serial failure to make progress in domestic politics, as over the last 21 years will, in my opinion, show the unprofessional incompetence of UKIP under Nigel Farage’s control despite the fact that he is very much a member of that political elite t
against whom the electorate are using  their vote to protest.
The electorate are in many ways more savvy than the political hacks in their Westminster bubble!
The less generous are also to be heard pointing out that Westminster offers far less opportunities for self enrichment at the tax payers’ expense and less anonimity in prolonged and frequent periods away from home!
Farage & UKIP must grow up and accept that there are absolutely zero so called efforts to ‘smear’ UKIP beyond the style of insult and smeart that Farage has handed out against his political opponents for many years it is merely as I have warned year in year out that as Farage gained prominence he would become subject to greater scruting and no carpet would be concealing enough to hide all that had been swept under it be that mistresses, abuse of tax payers’ money, corruption, bullying, racism, anti homosexuality, anti Islamism all caps that would appear to fit accurately –
or more simply:
‘The higher up the tree the monkey climbs the more you see its Rse’!

Hi,
I bwlieve you will find this article more than self explanatory and in keeping with so much of the publicity Ukip attracts, nay even earns, as being yet another exposee of their irresponsibility and ineptitude.
Surely it is long overdue that with the clowns it regularly puts in positions of authority even a press office as regularly incompetent as Ukip’s must by now be starting to realise that Lord Beaverbook just possibly might have been wrong when he said ‘There is no such thing as bad publicity’.
Again and again Ukip would seem to court disaster just to get publicity whether it is driving around in ancient scout cars & pretending they are tanks, or dressing up in chicken suits to parade around the EUropean pretend parliament, or inflatable bulldozers used to get in conflict with the Brusells Police or its MEPs copulating with prostitutes on the bonnets of cars on the public highways or urinating in plant pots and getting banned from hotels in continental EUrope – clearly all publicity is NOT good publicity – even when it is true and about Ukip and its personnel!

‘The amount of baccy and weed I had to vacuum up’: Youngest UKIP branch chairman caught boasting about ‘fantastic’ cannabis party

  • Teen UKIP member Rosie Ward, 17, caused fresh controversy for the party
  • She posted a Facebook message about ‘weed’ at a party she attended
  • She says that the drugs were brought by gatecrashers
  • Ward has just been made chairman of a Cornish branch of the organisation
  • The revelation comes as the party fights off allegations of racism

Just as UKIP are trying to shake off allegations of racism, the party has become embroiled in fresh controversy today after its youngest branch chairman was caught boasting about a ‘fantastic’ get-together where party-goers were smoking drugs.

Rosie Ward, 17, posted photos on her Facebook page showing revellers drinking and smoking at a bar at an event she is thought to have hosted.

The album was entitled ‘Punk Party’ and captioned: ‘The amount of baccy and weed I had to vacuum up. But all in all a fantastic night! X’.

Controversy: Chairman of the UKIP Camborne, Redruth and Hayle branch Rosie Ward, 17, with her predecessor, Harry Blakeley

Miss Ward made UKIP history in March when members unanimously elected her as chairman for the Camborne, Redruth and Hayle branch in Cornwall.

But despite being too young to be served in a pub, her photographs appear to have been taken inside The Hideaway Bar in Redruth, a venue which has since shut down.

They show several young revellers clutching cans of beer, smoking outside and making two-fingered gestures at the camera.

Miss Ward has since responded by saying her father was present at the party and that the cannabis was brought in by gatecrashers.

Cornwall Councillor Harry Blakeley, who Miss Ward took over from as UKIP branch chairman, said: ‘I’m aware that there is a situation regarding a Rosie Ward and a Facebook post.

‘Before considering Rosie for the role of chairman we strongly went through her history and she assured us that she had never smoked or taken any drugs.’

Straight A student Miss Ward is currently studying French, Latin and Spanish at A-level and plans to study Classics or History at university before joining the RAF.

The outspoken youngster runs her own blog site entitled ‘Never Mind the B******s here’s Rosaleena’ where she espouses her anti-EU stance and lists her interests as sailing, record collecting, the violin and playing rugby.

In one particular post Miss Ward attacks rules imposed on smokers saying they could drive young people to try more dangerous drugs.

She writes: ‘The continued persecution of smokers with these laws has caused another, more pressing issue to rise – the use of marijuana.

‘The more rules imposed on smokers, the more young people passively turn against the authority and turn to more dangerous drugs, but the European Union still fail to address the true ‘war on drugs’ and yet totally reject the idea of legalizing them.’

A biog describing why Rosie joined Young Independence, the youth wing of UKIP, says she chose the party because it ‘encourages freedom of speech’.

It also adds: ‘As well as this, Rosie happens to think Nigel Farage is awesome.

‘Cos he smokes. And she met Nigel once. He said she put her piece regarding grammar schools forward as “beautifully put”.. twice.’

UKIP Cornwall’s chairman Steph McWilliam said he had spoken to Miss Ward and did not see the party photographs as a serious issue.

He said: ‘I’ve spoken to Rosie and she’s assured us that her father was present at the party and the drugs were brought onto the premises by gatecrashers.’

Ward is the same age as Paris Brown, Paris Brown, the foul-mouthed youth crime commissioner who was forced to quit last year after a string of offensive Tweets.

Defiant: UKIP leader Nigel Farage has spent the week defending his party

Defiant: UKIP leader Nigel Farage has spent the week defending his party

The controversy over Miss Ward’s Facebook page comes after days of embarrassing gaffes and slip-ups by UKIP.

The party has been attacked for an allegedly racist European Election campaign while a number of extremists have been exposed in its ranks, including a candidate who said Lenny Henry should emigrate to a ‘black country’ and compared Islam to the Third Reich.

Nigel Farage has spent the week insisting his party is not racist, and yesterday suspended two members for links to far-right groups.

Photos of the party were updated four months ago – before Ward joined UKIP.

UKIP’s surge into lead rocks Tories
Cameron defies his Eurosceptics

Nigel Farage’s UKIP has a three-point lead over Labour in the EU elections,
with the Tories third
(JOHN STILLWELL)

DAVID CAMERON will refuse to make any further concessions to Eurosceptics despite UKIP surging into its first lead in the polls this weekend.

The prime minister was struggling to contain a growing Eurosceptic tide last night as he faced calls from Conservative MPs and the public to take a tougher line with Brussels to counter the UKIP threat.

Senior Tory backbenchers disclosed that they would visit Downing Street after the vote on May 22 to demand that Cameron outline much more extensive plans for the repatriation of powers from Brussels.

But Cameron will put himself on collision course with his party after privately dismissing their concerns and vowing not to give an inch — even if the Tories are humiliated in the European elections.

Tory jitters will be stoked by today’s YouGov poll for The Sunday Times on the EU elections, which puts UKIP in the lead for the first time, with the Conservatives trailing a distant third.

Despite a week of controversy, Nigel Farage’s party has risen to 31%, three points clear of Labour, with the Tories languishing on a lacklustre 19 points.

In another blow to the prime minister, the former Tory donor now backing UKIP has indicated that he will bankroll the party at the next general election — boosting Farage’s chances of winning seats at Westminster for the first time.

Paul Sykes, who is worth £650m, according to next month’s Sunday Times Rich List and is among the 200 wealthiest people in Britain, also revealed that he had funded “at least another two waves” of UKIP adverts before the European elections.

“I’m not giving up,” he said. “That will warn the Conservatives what’s going to happen. We will get more democracy in Britain if it skints [sic] me.”

The prime minister, in a newspaper article last month, detailed the powers he wanted to reclaim from Brussels before his proposed in/out referendum in 2017.

They included demands to stop “mass migrations” when new countries join the EU, curbs on benefits for EU migrants and “red card” powers for national parliaments to join together to block future EU laws.

But senior backbenchers on the Eurosceptic right, such as Bernard Jenkin, Gerald Howarth, John Redwood and Bill Cash, are all preparing to tell the prime minister that he must address the issue of border controls for existing EU migrants, the European Commission’s attempts to impose the Charter of Fundamental Rights on Britain and the need for national vetoes of existing European laws.

Howarth, a former defence minister, said: “It’s very important that the prime minister comes out with a specific programme on Europe. Everything we touch, we find that Europe wants to influence or, worse, control us.”

Another senior backbencher said: “Cameron needs to flesh out in greater detail what the deal is going to be . . . He doesn’t talk about changing freedom of movement, which is a red line for most of us. He has suggested it for new entrants. Why can’t we have it now?”

But a senior figure in Downing Street has revealed that Cameron will refuse to spell out further red lines on the grounds that an “endless list of demands” will not fit on campaign leaflets.

In a move that will enrage many, Cameron has privately stated that he has no intention of placating the Eurosceptics. “Some people will never be satisfied whatever you say,” he said. A source familiar with his thinking said: “We won’t be saying more about the renegotiation after the elections. He has spelt out where he wants to see changes and that’s what we are sticking with.”

Cameron and William Hague are also under fire from Cash, chairman of the Commons European scrutiny committee, who is demanding a response from ministers to proposals by the panel for national parliaments to gain “red card” veto powers of EU laws. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office has yet to formally respond to the proposals as it is required to do. “This report is important because it calls for veto and repeal of existing legislation in the national interest,” Cash said.

Conservative MPs also want more action to defend the City after the Treasury lost a court case against an EU directive on short selling that could drive hedge funds away from Britain. Another ruling, which could usher in a City transaction tax by the back door — opposed by the Treasury — is expected next week.

The new poll shows that it is the MPs not the prime minister who have public support: 42% of voters do not think his plans for renegotiation go far enough, against 25% who say they are about right. A total of 56% of voters think curbing immigration should be the top priority for Cameron’s new deal with Brussels — a view that Farage has exploited effectively.

While Cameron has dismissed UKIP as “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists”, the poll suggests the party has now broken through as a significant political force with a sizeable chunk of the electorate: 57% of all voters regard them as a protest party, 71% of UKIP’s own supporters regard them as a serious party.

Sykes told The Sunday Times that if Cameron did not grant a referendum in this parliament “to give the people a say on Brussels and our relationship with it” then he would help fund UKIP candidates at the general election.

“If we get a really good result in Europe and it looks promising . . . we can put some pressure on by fielding candidates, rolling our sleeves up and putting a professional campaign on. They will certainly win some seats.”

Sykes indicated that UKIP would be sending text messages to all voters next month as part of his spending blitz. “Technology kicks off in about a week’s time,” he said. “That will go out to all mobile phones. You’ve not seen anything like this!”

He warned Cameron that “the result of the European elections is going to be a challenge to his leadership”.

UKIP could profit from further Tory troubles this week because the disgraced MP Patrick Mercer is set to quit and force a by-election over a cash for questions scandal.

The Commons standards committee will meet on Tuesday to ban him from parliament for six months. The MP for Newark, a winnable seat for UKIP, has told friends that if he is suspended for more than a month he will have to stand down

Tim Shipman and Dipesh Gadher seem to have misunderstood Nigel farage’s relevance and even more so that of the party he so rigidly controls, just as Farage has misunderstood his relevance to Labour.
UKIP’s status is most clearly thaty of a suitable dustbin for the protest vote – a protest against the indifference of the body politic to the wishes of the people and even more so to their aims, values and concerns.
That UKIP has experienced no decline in its fortunes in spite of the revelations of its corruption, irresponsibility and racism facts that make the protest ever more meaningful the more befouled and sordid the dustbin is.
as for Farage’s belief that he is a great threat to Labour and attracting their vote is misunderstanding the polls as the BNP collapses and Plaid’s fortunes wane it is the natural Labour drifters who would all too normally vote Plaid or BNP and even a substantial number of Labour voters who may have voted SNP but realise the limited depth of political understanding of Alex salmon and those, particularly women, put off by his bullying, snearing, hectoring and offensive stridency and lack of a viable team it is these three groups of Labour voters and the protest vote of both Labour & Tory that are providing UKIP’s false dawn.
Yes of course, unless more of the truth about Farage’s team become understood in time and the relevant arrests are made, Farage will do well in the utterly irrelevant EU elections but as ever they are of absolutely no consequence in domestic politics being unlikely to gain any seats at Westminster let alone a significant enough number to have influence.
Like the SNP UKIP is so dependent on their leaders, a sound team or recognisable associates making them both look like one mann bands and as with commerce there is no man more vulnerable than the indespensible man even if it destroys the cause!, distasteful as many find them
