Mark Daniel photo
Mark Fitzgeorge-Parker who used the nom de plume Mark Daniels was born 1955
he sadly died early in the morning on Saturday 03-May-2014, in Cheltenham of pneumonia, aged only 59.
I was saddened to hear of the untimely death of Mark who I first met in 2005 when he phoned me up and asked if I would permit him to buy me lunch in Chepstow as he was researching a book on UKIP for Roger Knapman:
KNAPMAN, Roger 02
who was at that time the leader of UKIP.
Subsequently we spoke in detail often several times a week and asked to be on my mailing list, whilst he researched his book.
Mark was an interesting and well informed character and I soon learned from him of his Ampleforth & Cambridge education and the background and details of his earlier life and career. He made no effort to disguise any part of his colourful life, be that prison for passing dud cheques or being sued by his Father!
In 2005, shortly before the election, he published his book ‘Cranks & Gadflies, The Story of UKIP’, which is still thwe best and most accurate history and exposee of UKIP to that date. I well recall at the time Roger proclaimed his support for the book however I well remember Nigel Farage’s reticence to promote the book as he felt it was a little too accurate and comprehensive, perhaps as comment6ators said ‘warts and all’. Sadly no better nor more accurate book has been written about UKIP.
It is notable that despite Nigel’s reticence the book soon sold out and was very readable such that Mark was subsequently commissioned by Nigel Farage to write the two books about him, Mark was sufficiently competent a writer to write to a brief and be able to put a slant on a book to flatter and promote his client!
FARAGE, Nigel 39 The BookThe quote which was added was a comment made by Nigel farage’s long term associate the anti Islamic extremist and liar who inclines to incite racial hatred, Gerard Batten a UKIP MEP.
Mark’s second book promoting Farage was ‘Flying Free’ published in 2011.
In keeping with Mark’s willingness to publish warts and all when unrestrained the following review of his book on UKIP tells much of his history and personality:

‘A party of idiots, paranoiacs, whores and vagabonds’

Alexander Waugh reviews Cranks and Gadflies: the Story of UKIP by Mark Daniel.
19 Jun 2005
Isn’t it odd how people who group together under the banner of a shared opinion always seem to disagree more violently among themselves than with their declared enemies? It has always been the case. Take, for example, the early Christians. According to the ancient record of Celsus, written in about 178 AD: “Christians utterly detest each other, they slander each other constantly with the vilest forms of abuse… Each sect fills the head of its own with deceitful nonsense and makes perfect little pigs of those it wins over to its side.”
And so it is with UKIP – the United Kingdom Independence Party – whose founding purpose (to extricate Britain from the European Union) has been subsumed, in the 12 short years since its formation, by such a torrent of plotting, denouncing, suing, counter-suing, shrieking, back-stabbing and cussing that one wonders how many of its members have retained any memory of why they signed up with the party in the first place.
At a recent National Executive Council meeting one member became so livid with rage that he suffered a heart attack and died. And what about the time when such an almighty row broke out over who should be UKIP’s leader that the party was rent in twain and, for a while, two defiant UKIPs ran simultaneously out of two separate offices ?
In his absorbing history of the party, Mark Daniel appears to relish each scandal as it arises, gleefully relating how UKIP’s founder drained the party’s coffers to defend himself against accusations of slander and how a South East MEP stood for election in 2004 without mentioning that he was facing charges of housing benefit fraud (which remain subjudice and he denies fiercely).
Daniel also reveals how the party was infiltrated by the BNP activist, Mark Deavin; how UKIP’s Scottish organiser wrote to the newspapers declaring that the Nazi holocaust was grossly exaggerated; and he describes, with seeming glee, a party membership that is comprised of “idiots, paranoiacs and conspiracy theorists… freelance artists… traders, whores and vagabonds”.
From the outset, Daniel declares: “I have never been a party member.” It might easily be assumed from this that he is a disaffected party apparatchik whose sole purpose is to discredit UKIP in such a way that nobody ever votes for it again. But a couple of seconds of Google espionage reveals that Mark Daniel is in fact a nom de plume for Mark Fitzgeorge-Parker – who stood as a UKIP candidate in Exeter at this year’s General Election, ending in sixth place with 3.37 per cent of the vote.
A further scrimmage into the Fitzgeorge-Parker mystery reveals that the author enjoys something of a maverick past himself. Having been imprisoned as a young man for issuing duff cheques and pilfering precious books from Cambridge University libraries he used the Daniel pseudonym for a fictionalised account of his jail experiences. After his release, he found himself once again up in court on charges of libel and, in a parallel action, was sued by his own father for breach of copyright.
Perhaps none of this would be relevant had Daniel not chosen to call his book Cranks and Gadflies, a phrase drawn directly from Michael Howard’s intended slur on the UKIP membership, or if Nigel Farage, UKIP’s second-in-command, had not stood before the European Parliament denouncing individual members of José Barrosa’s Commission as ex-crooks, ex-communists and liars.
Daniel’s purpose in this warts-and-all exposé is not then, as far as I can tell, to discredit UKIP but, on the contrary, to make it seem like a quaintly attractive collective of “real people”. “Don’t mind me, I’m mad,” folks used to say to endear themselves to their school friends. That ploy didn’t work then and is unlikely to work for UKIP now. And if Daniel’s high-risk public relations experiment backfires it will cost the cranks and gadflies dearly.

A close friend of Mark’s, Hannah Wright, said:
“He was just so intelligent and had a vast knowledge. He was a person that people would turn to for help and he would do anything for anyone.“He had a great interaction with people and he was a real showman. But he was a complicated man and had a private side and could be reclusive at times.

“He was very kind and generous, but he could also be a difficult man, cantankerous and rude at times, but people were never offended.

“He was very good at reading people and was a truly gifted man.

“As one neighbour put it, he was often outrageous, but generally right”.

“He was passionate about so many things in Cheltenham – with one of them being that the town’s Jazz Festival was too quiet and should be louder.

“He had a massive impact on people’s lives and will be missed.”

I must say I found Mark to have all of these attributes and characteristics and thoroughly enjoyed my conversations with him and was flattered by the amount he used my then frequent eMails and my blogging as a source for his research, as of course did both media and UKIP leadership alike.
Mark in his younger days had been a keen fisherman and surfer and had inherited his father’s love or art and also his father’s interest in horses, having been competitive steeplechased.Tim Fitzgeorge-Parker was well known as a character and author particularly in the horse racing world.

Mark having lived in Italy, Ireland and France was fluent in both French and Italian and during my dealings with him was taking trips on costal cruisers in Norway and other Scandinavian ports as part of his work whilst living in Exeter as a regular columnist for The Western Morning News. Not only had he written 1,000s of columns for a variety of media but had published some 41 books.
In 2011 Mark moved to Cheltenham to live closer to his 20 year old son Kit.
Having moved to Montpellier in Cheltenham he threw himself, with his notable enthusiasm and commitment to people into life in Cheltenham and last year stood in the Gloucester County Council election for Lansdown and Park and this year was standing for a seat on Cheltenham Borough Council in Charlton Park ward. He had also stood for UKIP in the past when in Exeter.
An impressive intellect and sound knowlege in many fields will make the death of Mark a loss to many – the world is less colourful for his departure.
My condolences to his family and those whose lives he had touched.
.

Regards,

Greg_L-W..

10 good reasons not to vote for Ukip

Nigel Farage may seem genial but his party is anything but. The polls tell us that many voters are tempted to vote Ukip at the next election, while others dismiss them as a joke – but the prospect of them gaining more power in Europe is no laughing matter

o Hugh Muir

o Tuesday 29 April 2014 19.04 BST

Nigel Farage
If the polls are right, and they probably are, legions of ordinary British people, decent in so many respects, will back Ukip in the forthcoming European elections.

Some will tick the Farage box because they believe the party to be the future, setting out with clarity our country’s political, social and economic future. Others will give their endorsement because they have come to despise the other parties and the establishment. Indeed Farage has been encouraging them to turn away from the political elite and to see Ukip as a new way of doing things.

There will be those, genuinely unhappy, who wish for tougher action on migration and a handbrake turn away from Europe. Both are hot-potato issues and Ukip serves up a mash more easily digestible than that available elsewhere.

And then there is the contingent that thinks some or none of these things but will vote for the party as a form of interactive entertainment. “That Farage, he’s a good bloke,” they will say. “You can have a laugh with him.”

Ukip will do well because it can best survive in the polluted atmosphere that engulfs debate about migration and Europe, but also because it’s a perfect vehicle for a protest vote. No one takes it very seriously. And that’s the sadness. Because Ukip isn’t and has never been much of a laughing matter. Here’s why …

1. Its stances are bonkers

It appears to dislike everything about the European parliament, except, of course, the money EU taxpayers make available to its representatives (of which more later). Anything born of the EU seems bad. Let’s consider some of the things that have been bad in the recent past. In the past few months Ukip has voted against updated rules on cab design and safety, which would make it easier for the drivers of lorries to spot pedestrians and cyclists.

Also against requirements that MEPs who draft legislation should publish which lobbyists they have met and their influence on the legislation. It opposed greater transparency for clinical trials data and greater protections for holidaymakers buying package holidays.

Also legislation to tackle money laundering and calls for greater public access to EU documents. Things are moving in the right direction, perhaps.

The 2010 manifesto, which Farage has called “drivel”, called for taxi drivers to be required to wear uniforms, dress codes for the theatre and for the Circle line on London’s underground to be made a circle again.

2. It has nasty friends in Europe

A2

Farage seems a laugh in that “hail fellow well met” way. But you can tell a lot by the friends he keeps. And some of the types he hangs out with in Brussels would be seen as a rough crowd here. Who are they? There are the figures in the xenophobic and rightwing Italian Northern League, the second largest grouping in the Europe of Freedom and Democracy group, which Farage chairs. Umberto Bossi, its founder, once called for illegal immigrants to be shot. Farage knows they can be a bit unreconstructed. He had to expel one of its MEPs from the group last year after racist comments about Cécile Kyenge, Italy’s first black minister. She was, said Mario Borghezio, more suited to being a “housekeeper” or a low-level council official than a minister and would impose African “tribal traditions” on Italy.
The True Finns are firm friends too. One of them collided with a spot of bother for floating the idea of mandatory armbands for foreigners to make it easier for police to identify them.
The Danish People’s party: more ghastlies. In 2002, MEP Morten Messerschmidt was one of a group convicted of racially motivated offences. Frank Vanhecke is there too. He’s the former leader of Belgium’s Vlaams Blok, the far-right party disbanded after a court said it broke anti-racist laws. He appeared at a student rally with the BNP’s Nick Griffin in 2010. None of them are as obviously clubbable as Nige and he may want shot of them after the election. But they have been his Euro-mates for a while.

3. It’s a magnet for unsavoury types here

Andre Lampitt

Domestically Ukip talks a good game. We only want respectable types, it says. But as Jeremy Hunt has pointed out, it does seem effortlessly able to attract – among the decent – a proportion of rum characters. When they say racist, Islamophobic or plain offensive things, Farage wields the stick. But even he must wonder why they pitch up on his party’s doorstep in the first place.
Andre Lampitt, we know. Having starred in the latest Ukip TV ad, he was outed for dismissing Ed Miliband as “a Pole”, asserting that Enoch Powell was right, Islam was Satanic and that Africans should be left to “kill themselves”. He has since been suspended. And then there was David Silvester, the councillor who attributed the winter floods to gay marriage. William Henwood popped up this week, calling for Lenny Henry, who seeks equality in the creative arts, to emigrate to “a black country”. These were outriders, perhaps. But what about fellow MEP Gerard Batten, who called for British Muslims to sign a special code of conduct promising not to engage in violent jihad. Farage said that wasn’t party policy.
But Batten’s still there, Ukip MEP for multicultural London. And would any other party have welcomed to a senior post Neil Hamilton, the disgraced poster boy of the cash for questions scandal? His election role has reportedly been downgraded, but he’s still deputy chair. At the weekend, he was on the BBC wearing his party hat and preaching the Faragian gospel. A strange choice to hoist on to the Ukip soapbox, but not the strangest. Is it worth mentioning that two of Ukip’s 2004 intake ended up in jail for EU expenses fraud? The party that isn’t like the other parties seems to be like the other parties after all.

4. It has rewarded offence

Link to video: Godfrey Bloom hits journalist Michael Crick with Ukip brochure
Recently the party has taken the stick to those who might tarnish its journey into the electoral mainstream. Perhaps that is because with favourable polls comes harsher scrutiny. But hitherto, it seemed to have little problem with those who caused outrage or offence. Poor Godfrey Bloom had to biff Michael Crick of Channel 4 News with a party brochure to get himself disciplined, but prior to that, the nonstop misogyny and references to aid being sent to Bongo Bongo Land were viewed benignly. In 2010 we encountered Paul Wiffen. He was London chairman of Ukip when he thought to hold forth on Community Care website, addressing those whose views were different. “You leftwing scum are all the same,” he said. “Wanting to hand our birthright to Romanian Gypsies who beat their wives and children into begging and stealing money they can gamble with, Muslim nutters who want to kill us and put us all under medieval Sharia law, the same Africans who sold their Afro-Caribbean brothers into a slavery that Britain was the first to abolish (but you still want to apologise for!).” Like Lampitt, he was suspended. And then he was selected as Ukip’s London North East candidate for the London assembly in 2012.
He did not win.

5. It hates the EU but cashes in

EU flag.
Nigel Farage claims he uses EU money to hasten its demise. Photograph: Getty Images/Laura Ronchi
The Times and Farage have tussled about all the money he claims from the European parliament, in addition to the average £83,000 salary. It is my entitlement, he says. I use EU money to hasten its demise. Much of the focus has been on the monthly fixed-rate allowance of £3,850 and whether it is used to fund his activities as an MEP or party work. But attention has also been paid to the fact that Farage is one of 38 British MEPs in line for a second EU pension, which could reap them £41,000 a year in addition to the basic EU fund.
“It is not a system that I defend but it is the system,” he told the Telegraph.
His take on the allowances, as revealed in the Guardian, is clear and may be instructive. Is this above board, he was asked. “I think I’ve kept just the right side of the line, albeit pushing right up to it,” he replied.
Everywhere contradictions. Last week Ukip’s patriotic People’s Army toured the country in a-Mercedes Benz.

6. Its MEPs are not exactly worker bees

Bumble bee
A busy bee, buzzing off to Brussels. Possibly. Photograph: Papilio/Alamy
Having been elected and having pledged to topple the EU from within, one might think the Ukipians would be assiduous attenders, the better to disparage and critique it. Instead, they are famed absentees.
This seems a badge of honour. They get elected to the European parliament, receive a salary and allowances for being members of the European parliament. And then restrict appearances there on the basis that regular attendances would lend the place legitimacy. Ukip’s deputy leader, Paul Nuttall, set out the position on his blog after his spotty record in the EU parliament was flagged up in the Telegraph.
“I’ll hold my hands up,” he said. “My attendance record is flaky to say the least. But so what?” Dispatched to Brussels, his focus is actually his UK fiefdom. “I treat Brussels with the contempt it deserves.”

7. It’s as vulnerable to special interests as any other party

Paul Sykes
Paul Sykes, Ukip party donor. Photograph: Peter Byrne/PA
Much of the criticism of what Farage calls the establishment elite boils down to influence and money. He says that the other parties are in hock to vested interests and that chimes. No one wants to see the political process skewed by interests with fat wallets. So what is one to think of the Ukip poster campaign? The multimillionaire Paul Sykes has been generous, as previously he was to the anti-EU Democracy Movement and to the Conservatives before he fell out with them. But the £1.5m publicity campaign – the most visible in the party’s history – is as much his as Ukip’s. He funded it. Prudent perhaps. One of Britain’s richest self-made men, he didn’t become rich by wasting his money. But if his input is that important, who calls the shots?

8. It speaks with forked tongues

Leave aside the now acknowledged mistake of featuring Lampitt in the party political broadcast. And the fact that another person described as an ordinary voter in a manifesto document turned out to be a party employee who works for Farage. And the fact that one man featured in the poster campaign turned out to be a migrant actor from Ireland. And the fact that former head of the British Army Lord Dannatt condemned the image of the British flag on fire. Consider the central implausibility of the central claim: that 26 million of the European unemployed are gunning for jobs in Britain. Two million from the total are British anyway. Consider that if an entity save for a political party enjoying exemption from the advertising code of conduct ran that misleading ad, it would have been forced to withdraw it.
Then consider this, from the Sun on 12 April. “In an article MoT fix axe fears (March 30) we quoted a letter from Ukip containing claims that thousands of MoT test centres could close under EU proposals forcing motorists whose cars fail to go to a different garage for repairs. We have been informed that no such EU proposals exist and are happy to set the record straight.”

9. Its only plan is Nigel

Nigel Farage
It’s that Ukip man again … Nigel Farage. Photograph: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images
Has there ever been a major party so dependent on one sellable character? Farage is, without question, the most dominant and effective party leader in national politics. Erase him from the canvas and what is left? EU stayaway Nuttall? “Liar and a cheat” Hamilton?
The cult of Farage is rivalled only in its potency by the cult of Boris, for like him, Farage is a vivid brand deployed to politics.
Both trade illusions. Boris projects slapstick and shambles when all the time beneath is ambitious focus and a keen-eyed grasp of modern politics. Farage is Everyman; all booze and fags and antennae for the cares and fears of ordinary people. This from the son of a stockbroker, with an often-lamented career in the City behind him; children all privately educated; prosperous product of a village upbringing in Kent.

10. It makes a sensible debate on Europe less likely

Quite the biggest achievement of Ukip has been to shape the ground on which we discuss two touchstone issues, Europe and migration. Both are complex. Both bring benefits and present challenges. But Ukip’s reductionist approach has made reasoned and nuanced discussion of both virtually impossible. And so, frightened of being eclipsed, and mindful that a simplistic answer will always trump a detailed one in the 24-hour news cycle, politicians in Farage’s slipstream distil their own arguments, minimising maturity and sacrificing logic. Those who present a reasoned argument are howled down or judged to have lost the argument. Perhaps the least amusing aspect of Farage is the impact he will have on parties other than his own.

Just read the rest of this blog site and you will realise why UKIP as it is with its vile racist associates, political corruption, all too typical political elite dishonesty, bullying, abuse of tax payers money, sociopathic leadership team and total lack of structure, gravitas or even an understanding let alone a plane put forward as a clear ‘Exit & Survival Strategy when it comes to Leaving_The_EU’.
Little wonder that after 21 years UKIP still proves to be an abject failure in domestic elections and is clearly dependent on being the protest vote of choice in EU elections!

Nigel Farage has bottled his by-election chance, and Ukip is over

John Rentoul
Wednesday 30 April 2014
FARAGE, Nigel 85 BILLBOARD 01
After Nigel Farage blew up his rocket on the launch pad at 8.05 this morning, today’s Prime Minister’s Questions became more important and less interesting.
But first let us pay our respects to the late UK Independence Party. It had a good run. There is a bit of fun still to be had. Today we have already had two opinion polls suggesting that it is going to win the largest share of votes in the European Parliament elections on 22 May by some margin. Ukip is nine or 11 points ahead with three weeks still to go, which has the makings of a landslide.
It may seem perverse to suggest, therefore, that the party is over. But I suggest that this is precisely what it is. Done with, finished, a footnote.
By failing to seize the party’s one chance to win a by-election, Farage has blown it. Not that “it” was ever a very good chance. Farage bottled the Newark by-election because he didn’t think he would win it. And if he couldn’t win it, there is no one else in Ukip who could. The best chance of achieving the “breakthrough” that is the holy grail for protest parties, which in this case would mean a handful of MPs at the next general election, would have been to establish the credibility of a bridgehead in the House of Commons before the general election.
I think we can now take it that Ukip will win one MP at the next election at most. That one MP might be Farage, standing in a Kent seat such as Folkestone, where he has connections, members and organisation. He would then be the Caroline Lucas of the next parliament and Ukip would fade away, apart from its large numbers of troublesome MEPs in the European Parliament.
The thing is that Ukip faces a challenge to its reason for existing after the next general election, whatever the result. If Cameron wins, he is committed to a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU in 2017, after which Ukip would have little purpose. If Ed Miliband wins, the Conservative Party in opposition is likely to become several degrees more Eurosceptic. Boris Johnson only this week restated his view that, if Cameron could not secure better terms of EU membership, he would vote to leave. Again, the need for a separate anti-EU party will be greatly diminished. And if the Liberal Democrats, through some tragic accident of the arithmetic, should find themselves out of government, there would not even be the need for a separate protest party any more.
So that is it, I think. There will be a lot of fizz, smoke and carousel music, but in three weeks’ time the Great Ukip Flying Circus will be in decline. Big social trends are against it. The economy is looking up, and people mind less about free movement of workers when they feel better off. Scepticism about the EU has ebbed. YouGov now consistently finds that, even if there were a referendum now on existing terms of membership, people would vote to stay in.
Which left us with Prime Minister’s Questions. Back to politics as usual. The Ukip-free House of Commons debated the sale of the Royal Mail. Miliband complained about “a rip-off of taxpayers”. Cameron responded with a history lesson, quoting Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock on 1980s privatisations.
Miliband had a good argument and an effective debating point, quoting Brian Binley, the Tory chairman of the Business select committee, who had described the way the sell-off was managed as “unethical” and who was nodding in agreement on the back-benches behind Cameron’s blind spot.
Cameron had a reasonable argument – Labour had tried to sell the Royal Mail and this government had succeeded – and an effective diversionary tactic, pointing out that Miliband dared not mention the economy, jobs or the deficit, because they were all coming good.
The Prime Minister could not say what he really thought, which was that Vince Cable might have been taken for a fast one by some of those spivs in the City, but that the risks of failing to unload the shares onto the market were worse than those of seeing them snapped up and a rise in price, showing an instant profit.
But those are the sort of calculations that government politics are all about, the sort of thing that Ukip would like to wish away. Returning to real politics will be duller, but more important.

Personally I believe John Rentoul has managed to get this largely wrong and it may just be one of the politically astute actions Nigel Farage has ever made as it seems likely he would have failed to get elect5ed in Newsrk and that would very certainly have been the end of UKIP as if they failed to get their ONLY known personality elected after what can be expected to be an excellent result in the EU elections based on UKIP being used as a protest vote against the recognised political elite who the electorate perceive, not entirely inaccurately, to have betrayed Britain and our peoples.
One reason it could be expected that Nigel Farage would fail to be elected in Newark is that IF he had taken on the challenge it is almost certain that the Tories would have fielded Boris Johnson in as their candidate
The danger for UKIP now is that whenever and wherever Farage tries to get a seat in Westminster the Tories will field their biggest hitter against him and being something of a one man band elected as the public’s protest vote serial failure to make progress in domestic politics, as over the last 21 years will, in my opinion, show the unprofessional incompetence of UKIP under Nigel Farage’s control despite the fact that he is very much a member of that political elite t
against whom the electorate are using  their vote to protest.
The electorate are in many ways more savvy than the political hacks in their Westminster bubble!
The less generous are also to be heard pointing out that Westminster offers far less opportunities for self enrichment at the tax payers’ expense and less anonimity in prolonged and frequent periods away from home!
Farage & UKIP must grow up and accept that there are absolutely zero so called efforts to ‘smear’ UKIP beyond the style of insult and smeart that Farage has handed out against his political opponents for many years it is merely as I have warned year in year out that as Farage gained prominence he would become subject to greater scruting and no carpet would be concealing enough to hide all that had been swept under it be that mistresses, abuse of tax payers’ money, corruption, bullying, racism, anti homosexuality, anti Islamism all caps that would appear to fit accurately –
or more simply:
‘The higher up the tree the monkey climbs the more you see its Rse’!

Hi,
I bwlieve you will find this article more than self explanatory and in keeping with so much of the publicity Ukip attracts, nay even earns, as being yet another exposee of their irresponsibility and ineptitude.
Surely it is long overdue that with the clowns it regularly puts in positions of authority even a press office as regularly incompetent as Ukip’s must by now be starting to realise that Lord Beaverbook just possibly might have been wrong when he said ‘There is no such thing as bad publicity’.
Again and again Ukip would seem to court disaster just to get publicity whether it is driving around in ancient scout cars & pretending they are tanks, or dressing up in chicken suits to parade around the EUropean pretend parliament, or inflatable bulldozers used to get in conflict with the Brusells Police or its MEPs copulating with prostitutes on the bonnets of cars on the public highways or urinating in plant pots and getting banned from hotels in continental EUrope – clearly all publicity is NOT good publicity – even when it is true and about Ukip and its personnel!

‘The amount of baccy and weed I had to vacuum up’: Youngest UKIP branch chairman caught boasting about ‘fantastic’ cannabis party

  • Teen UKIP member Rosie Ward, 17, caused fresh controversy for the party
  • She posted a Facebook message about ‘weed’ at a party she attended
  • She says that the drugs were brought by gatecrashers
  • Ward has just been made chairman of a Cornish branch of the organisation
  • The revelation comes as the party fights off allegations of racism

Just as UKIP are trying to shake off allegations of racism, the party has become embroiled in fresh controversy today after its youngest branch chairman was caught boasting about a ‘fantastic’ get-together where party-goers were smoking drugs.

Rosie Ward, 17, posted photos on her Facebook page showing revellers drinking and smoking at a bar at an event she is thought to have hosted.

The album was entitled ‘Punk Party’ and captioned: ‘The amount of baccy and weed I had to vacuum up. But all in all a fantastic night! X’.

Controversy: Chairman of the UKIP Camborne, Redruth and Hayle branch Rosie Ward, 17, with her predecessor, Harry Blakeley

Miss Ward made UKIP history in March when members unanimously elected her as chairman for the Camborne, Redruth and Hayle branch in Cornwall.

But despite being too young to be served in a pub, her photographs appear to have been taken inside The Hideaway Bar in Redruth, a venue which has since shut down.

They show several young revellers clutching cans of beer, smoking outside and making two-fingered gestures at the camera.

‘Punk party’: Ms Ward posted this picture on Facebook of a party she attended at which she vacuumed up ‘weed’ and then said it was a ‘fantastic night’

Miss Ward has since responded by saying her father was present at the party and that the cannabis was brought in by gatecrashers.

Cornwall Councillor Harry Blakeley, who Miss Ward took over from as UKIP branch chairman, said: ‘I’m aware that there is a situation regarding a Rosie Ward and a Facebook post.

‘Before considering Rosie for the role of chairman we strongly went through her history and she assured us that she had never smoked or taken any drugs.’

Straight A student Miss Ward is currently studying French, Latin and Spanish at A-level and plans to study Classics or History at university before joining the RAF.

The outspoken youngster runs her own blog site entitled ‘Never Mind the B******s here’s Rosaleena’ where she espouses her anti-EU stance and lists her interests as sailing, record collecting, the violin and playing rugby.

In one particular post Miss Ward attacks rules imposed on smokers saying they could drive young people to try more dangerous drugs.

She writes: ‘The continued persecution of smokers with these laws has caused another, more pressing issue to rise – the use of marijuana.

‘The more rules imposed on smokers, the more young people passively turn against the authority and turn to more dangerous drugs, but the European Union still fail to address the true ‘war on drugs’ and yet totally reject the idea of legalizing them.’

A biog describing why Rosie joined Young Independence, the youth wing of UKIP, says she chose the party because it ‘encourages freedom of speech’.

It also adds: ‘As well as this, Rosie happens to think Nigel Farage is awesome.

‘Cos he smokes. And she met Nigel once. He said she put her piece regarding grammar schools forward as “beautifully put”.. twice.’

UKIP Cornwall’s chairman Steph McWilliam said he had spoken to Miss Ward and did not see the party photographs as a serious issue.

He said: ‘I’ve spoken to Rosie and she’s assured us that her father was present at the party and the drugs were brought onto the premises by gatecrashers.’

Ward is the same age as Paris Brown, Paris Brown, the foul-mouthed youth crime commissioner who was forced to quit last year after a string of offensive Tweets.

Defiant: UKIP leader Nigel Farage has spent the week defending his party

Defiant: UKIP leader Nigel Farage has spent the week defending his party

The controversy over Miss Ward’s Facebook page comes after days of embarrassing gaffes and slip-ups by UKIP.

The party has been attacked for an allegedly racist European Election campaign while a number of extremists have been exposed in its ranks, including a candidate who said Lenny Henry should emigrate to a ‘black country’ and compared Islam to the Third Reich.

Nigel Farage has spent the week insisting his party is not racist, and yesterday suspended two members for links to far-right groups.

Photos of the party were updated four months ago – before Ward joined UKIP.

UKIP’s surge into lead rocks Tories
Cameron defies his Eurosceptics

Nigel Farage’s UKIP has a three-point lead over Labour in the EU elections,
with the Tories third
(JOHN STILLWELL)

DAVID CAMERON will refuse to make any further concessions to Eurosceptics despite UKIP surging into its first lead in the polls this weekend.

The prime minister was struggling to contain a growing Eurosceptic tide last night as he faced calls from Conservative MPs and the public to take a tougher line with Brussels to counter the UKIP threat.

Senior Tory backbenchers disclosed that they would visit Downing Street after the vote on May 22 to demand that Cameron outline much more extensive plans for the repatriation of powers from Brussels.

But Cameron will put himself on collision course with his party after privately dismissing their concerns and vowing not to give an inch — even if the Tories are humiliated in the European elections.

Tory jitters will be stoked by today’s YouGov poll for The Sunday Times on the EU elections, which puts UKIP in the lead for the first time, with the Conservatives trailing a distant third.

Despite a week of controversy, Nigel Farage’s party has risen to 31%, three points clear of Labour, with the Tories languishing on a lacklustre 19 points.

In another blow to the prime minister, the former Tory donor now backing UKIP has indicated that he will bankroll the party at the next general election — boosting Farage’s chances of winning seats at Westminster for the first time.

Paul Sykes, who is worth £650m, according to next month’s Sunday Times Rich List and is among the 200 wealthiest people in Britain, also revealed that he had funded “at least another two waves” of UKIP adverts before the European elections.

“I’m not giving up,” he said. “That will warn the Conservatives what’s going to happen. We will get more democracy in Britain if it skints [sic] me.”

The prime minister, in a newspaper article last month, detailed the powers he wanted to reclaim from Brussels before his proposed in/out referendum in 2017.

They included demands to stop “mass migrations” when new countries join the EU, curbs on benefits for EU migrants and “red card” powers for national parliaments to join together to block future EU laws.

But senior backbenchers on the Eurosceptic right, such as Bernard Jenkin, Gerald Howarth, John Redwood and Bill Cash, are all preparing to tell the prime minister that he must address the issue of border controls for existing EU migrants, the European Commission’s attempts to impose the Charter of Fundamental Rights on Britain and the need for national vetoes of existing European laws.

Howarth, a former defence minister, said: “It’s very important that the prime minister comes out with a specific programme on Europe. Everything we touch, we find that Europe wants to influence or, worse, control us.”

Another senior backbencher said: “Cameron needs to flesh out in greater detail what the deal is going to be . . . He doesn’t talk about changing freedom of movement, which is a red line for most of us. He has suggested it for new entrants. Why can’t we have it now?”

But a senior figure in Downing Street has revealed that Cameron will refuse to spell out further red lines on the grounds that an “endless list of demands” will not fit on campaign leaflets.

In a move that will enrage many, Cameron has privately stated that he has no intention of placating the Eurosceptics. “Some people will never be satisfied whatever you say,” he said. A source familiar with his thinking said: “We won’t be saying more about the renegotiation after the elections. He has spelt out where he wants to see changes and that’s what we are sticking with.”

Cameron and William Hague are also under fire from Cash, chairman of the Commons European scrutiny committee, who is demanding a response from ministers to proposals by the panel for national parliaments to gain “red card” veto powers of EU laws. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office has yet to formally respond to the proposals as it is required to do. “This report is important because it calls for veto and repeal of existing legislation in the national interest,” Cash said.

Conservative MPs also want more action to defend the City after the Treasury lost a court case against an EU directive on short selling that could drive hedge funds away from Britain. Another ruling, which could usher in a City transaction tax by the back door — opposed by the Treasury — is expected next week.

The new poll shows that it is the MPs not the prime minister who have public support: 42% of voters do not think his plans for renegotiation go far enough, against 25% who say they are about right. A total of 56% of voters think curbing immigration should be the top priority for Cameron’s new deal with Brussels — a view that Farage has exploited effectively.

While Cameron has dismissed UKIP as “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists”, the poll suggests the party has now broken through as a significant political force with a sizeable chunk of the electorate: 57% of all voters regard them as a protest party, 71% of UKIP’s own supporters regard them as a serious party.

Sykes told The Sunday Times that if Cameron did not grant a referendum in this parliament “to give the people a say on Brussels and our relationship with it” then he would help fund UKIP candidates at the general election.

“If we get a really good result in Europe and it looks promising . . . we can put some pressure on by fielding candidates, rolling our sleeves up and putting a professional campaign on. They will certainly win some seats.”

Sykes indicated that UKIP would be sending text messages to all voters next month as part of his spending blitz. “Technology kicks off in about a week’s time,” he said. “That will go out to all mobile phones. You’ve not seen anything like this!”

He warned Cameron that “the result of the European elections is going to be a challenge to his leadership”.

UKIP could profit from further Tory troubles this week because the disgraced MP Patrick Mercer is set to quit and force a by-election over a cash for questions scandal.

The Commons standards committee will meet on Tuesday to ban him from parliament for six months. The MP for Newark, a winnable seat for UKIP, has told friends that if he is suspended for more than a month he will have to stand down

Tim Shipman and Dipesh Gadher seem to have misunderstood Nigel farage’s relevance and even more so that of the party he so rigidly controls, just as Farage has misunderstood his relevance to Labour.
UKIP’s status is most clearly thaty of a suitable dustbin for the protest vote – a protest against the indifference of the body politic to the wishes of the people and even more so to their aims, values and concerns.
That UKIP has experienced no decline in its fortunes in spite of the revelations of its corruption, irresponsibility and racism facts that make the protest ever more meaningful the more befouled and sordid the dustbin is.
as for Farage’s belief that he is a great threat to Labour and attracting their vote is misunderstanding the polls as the BNP collapses and Plaid’s fortunes wane it is the natural Labour drifters who would all too normally vote Plaid or BNP and even a substantial number of Labour voters who may have voted SNP but realise the limited depth of political understanding of Alex salmon and those, particularly women, put off by his bullying, snearing, hectoring and offensive stridency and lack of a viable team it is these three groups of Labour voters and the protest vote of both Labour & Tory that are providing UKIP’s false dawn.
Yes of course, unless more of the truth about Farage’s team become understood in time and the relevant arrests are made, Farage will do well in the utterly irrelevant EU elections but as ever they are of absolutely no consequence in domestic politics being unlikely to gain any seats at Westminster let alone a significant enough number to have influence.
Like the SNP UKIP is so dependent on their leaders, a sound team or recognisable associates making them both look like one mann bands and as with commerce there is no man more vulnerable than the indespensible man even if it destroys the cause!, distasteful as many find them

Mirror Mirror on The Wall Whose Hubris Could Cause The Fall?
Could it be the assumption of the ignorance of readers of The Daily Mirror by Kevin Maguire or the arrogance & hubris of Nigel Farage?

.

~~~~~~~~~~#########~~~~~~~~~~
.
Hi,
I appreciate few if any Mirror readers are expected by Keving Maguire to have read and even less to have understood Enoch Powell’s speeches, particularly his prescient ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech of 1968 CLICK HERE; nor have paid much attention to his warnings to The House of Commons, in Hansard Feb-1970, with regard to the folly of joining The EU and the very clear fact, even then, that it was NOT an economic common market but a Political entity that would lead to ever greater loss of Sovereignty, regardless of the lies of Ted Heath, Geoffrey Rippon & others CLICK HERE – I wonder if Kevin Maguire has read them? Perhaps he is patronising his readers in The Mirror by assuming their ignorance!
It’s time to SLUG it out with Nigel Farage’s modern day Enoch Powell racists
Apr 27, 2014 22:15
OPINION BY KEVIN MAGUIRE
The UKIP jibe against black Briton Lenny Henry shows a racist party that hasn’t moved on from the dark days of the 1970s says Kevin Maguire
Comic Lenny Henry’s dig in the 1970s at the expense of Tory racist Enoch Powell needs updating for UKIP in 2014.
Back then the comic’s riposte went something like this: “Enoch Powell wants to give us £1,000 to go home. Suits me. It only costs me £10 to get to Dudley.”
The “black country”, a slug in UKIP suggested Henry should emigrate to, isn’t the Black Country in England’s West Midlands from which he hails.
The slug, standing for UKIP in a North London council election, embroidered his malevolence by adding that Henry, a prominent and well-liked Black Briton, “does not have to live with whites”. The slug wasn’t, I’m sure, referring to Henry’s divorce from Dawn French.
David Cameron’s jibe that Ukippers are “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists, mostly” is obsolete when a terrifying number of its venomous, hate-filled members are out of the closet and proudly express their prejudices.
I disagree on much with Tory Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, not least over what he’s doing to the NHS, but I agreed with him yesterday when he told me on John Pienaar’s Radio 5 Live show the attack on Henry was racist. It was, and deserves total condemnation.
UKIP playing the victim card, whining it’s unfairly scrutinised when its activists are exposed as nasty Neanderthals, reeks of self-pity.
The anti-immigration party’s built on a stack of poisonous fears, fanning irrational suspicions and distorting the view of people from abroad who come to work in Britain.
So it’s no great surprise so many nutcases are coming out of the woodwork. If a party courts BNP voters, it’ll be tainted by extremism. Nigel Farage posing as an outsider is also one of the most ludicrous deceptions of contemporary politics.
He’s a privately educated City trader who has spent 15 years riding first class on the Brussels Gravy Train. Farage has some brass neck to denounce the expenses of MPs when his own snout is deep in the trough and he put his wife on the public payroll. His irritation when asked if she, a German, had taken a British job was hilarious.
And there is nothing anti-establishment about a UKIP with disgraced former Tory minister Neil “a liar and a cheat” Hamilton in its upper ranks. Blaming migrants for low wages and poor housing suits a party that champions Fat Cats from whose cloth Thatcher worshipper Farage is cut. Who shut coal mines, shipyards, steel plants, factories and textile mills in Northern England?
Not migrant workers but the Maggie Thatcher who Farage venerates.
UKIP succeeds by persuading people to lash out at strangers instead of joining the dots.
The abuse of Lenny Henry wasn’t an isolated incident.
Bile is central to UKIP’s DNA.
I’m convinced the bubble will burst. If not, Britain will be left a worse country.
There is of course no doubt that using the cliches to exploit the ignorance Kevin Maguire expects of his Mirror readers he does have a point.
There is no doubt that if one ignores the facts and what Enoch Powell actually said in 1968 and depend on the quite ridiculous spin that has been put on his speech, taken out of context and selectively quoted to produce a lie Kevin Maguire has put his finger on one of the more worrying aspects of Nigel Farage’s one man band.
Many will consider my calling UKIP a one man band unfair but stop for a moment and consider howmany people could name more than Nigel Farage, as he struts and postures posing as UKIP. Farage has evicerated every individual who might have turned UKIP into a professional party with any kind of infrastructure, any idea of an organogram, any concepts of probity and accountability for public money or any chance of relevance in domestic politics.
I wonder just what percentage could attribute more than two actions by UKIP front runners to more than 2 such individuals, besides their all hallowed central controller Nigel Farage!
Do YOU believe that UKIP would survive in any significant way if Farage met with the same level of justice meted out to Tom Wise when he stole and embezzled a mere £36,000?
.
UKIP election hopeful in huge U-turn over Remembrance Sunday and 9/11 Twitter insults
Ummer Farooq, 29, mocked Remembrance Day poppies as “occultism” and said the US staged the 9/11 attacks
Phil Harris / Sunday Mirror
Tweets: UKIP candidate Ummer Farooq
A UKIP candidate has made a u-turn over a series of “aggressive Twitter rants as he desperately tries to revive his election chances.
Ummer Farooq, 29, mocked Remembrance Day poppies as “occultism” and said the US staged the 9/11 attacks.
He also tweeted “every adult in the UK” should be armed and said Israel “created” Palestinian terror group Hamas.
But the latest embarrassment to UKIP boss Nigel Farage back-pedalled on Friday – as the party distanced themselves from his views.
He told the Sunday Mirror he had been “childish” and “aggressive.”
Farooq, bidding for a seat in the May 22 local elections, said of his tweets: “They don’t help. I shouldn’t be saying things like this.”
He claimed he had changed his mind and added: “I know many Jewish people through UKIP. They are nice.”
A party spokesman said yesterday: “We will investigate Mr Farooq’s comments. The views expressed are his own and are not UKIP’s.”
Farooq, who also tweeted that the Boston Marathon bombers were innocent, made his “apology” three days after UKIP suspended the star of its EU election campaign film over offensive tweets.
Zimbabwe-born Andre Lampitt was one of five supporters who appeared in a party broadcast for next month’s poll. But the council election candidate was suspended after he allegedly branded Islam “evil,” claimed the Prophet Muhammed was “a paedo” and said Africans should “kill themselves off.”
Farooq – aiming to win his party’s first seat on Labour-controlled Waltham Forest Council in East London – believes he will avoid the same fate with an apology.
Many will recall the self serving outburst of truth ffrom Mike Nattrass MEP when after years of utter irelevance he had finally shown a spark of ethical behaviour and denounced the racist associates of Nigel Farage and the odious group Farage had formerd from the gutter sweepings of EU politics.
Mike Nattrass’ flickering of integrity did not last long as having spoken out telling the truth about Farage he then sought to curry favour by rejoining the racist bigots Nigel Farage had surrounded himself with in the EU in his EFD Group. Presumably having changed his mind about retiring as he realised how dependent he had become upon the income and status it gave him!
needless to say Nattrass did not admit to just how involved in UKIP corruption he was nor how he had defended the corruption of the MEP candidate selection process in the past – kind of different when the dishonesty and rigging did not favour him any more. Here are details of the corruption when Nattrass & Farage were working together CLICK HERE
After the sickening and sychophantic drivel from Decca Aitkenhead in The Guardian CLICK HERE which manifest every aspect of the hybristophilia on which Farage’s apparent charm depends seducing the young gullible and foolish as he panders to the image of the concerned patriot rather than the self serving and self enriching insecure control freak that he clearly is.
Some balance is brought to Decca Aitkenhead’s foolish comments by Daniel Boffey and Lucy Fisher in the footsteps of sanity proffered by Hugh Muir and Nick Cohen in their respective articles, one wonders how such frippery as Ms. Aitkenhead’s can have passed under the radar:
Ukip candidates add to Nigel Farage’s woes with a barrage of racism
Party promises to act on social media comments, including call that Lenny Henry should leave BritainNigel Farage is a phoney. Scrutinise him and he’ll crumble
Ukip is facing a fresh storm of controversy as further evidence emerged of racism among its local election candidates, including a suggestion by one that the comedian Lenny Henry should emigrate to a “black country”.
Candidates have taken to social media sites to rail against Islam as “organised crime under religious camouflage” while likening the religion to Nazism, and suggesting that the murder of the black teenager Stephen Lawrence has received a disproportionate level of attention.
One candidate for election in Enfield, William Henwood, responded to a recent speech by Henry, in which he suggested there was a poor representation of black and ethnic minorities on British television, by tweeting: “He should emigrate to a black country. He does not have to live with whites.”
Ukip, polling at 18% in the latest Observer/Opinium findings, said the party was “non-racist, non-sectarian” and that “any comments made by members that fail to uphold these values will be duly investigated and acted upon”.
The latest developments will only add to Nigel Farage‘s woes after a disastrous week for the party in which its big advertising campaign has been picked apart. Ukip has already been forced to suspend the “poster boy” of its European party election broadcast after it was revealed he had posted a series of racist comments on Twitter. A builder in a Ukip poster accusing EU workers of taking UK jobs was discovered to be an Irish actor who migrated to this country, and a woman who appeared on a poster as a voter from Devon was Ukip’s events manager and an assistant to the party leader.
Ukip has attempted to improve its vetting of candidates in the local and European elections to be held next month, but it appears that some of their members will not be constrained on social media. Along with his comments about Henry, the party’s candidate in Enfield Town, London, has tweeted that “Islam reminds me of the 3rd Reich, strength through violence against the citizens”. He said Muslims “like us to fawn to them” and “young Muslim men remind me of young Afrikaners. They are taught at an early age they have the right to abuse”.
A Ukip candidate in Camden, Magnus Nielsen, used his Facebook account to post: “70% of mosques in the UK have been taken over by Wahabbi fundamentalists. Islam is organised crime under religious camouflage. Any Muslim who is not involved in organised crime is not a ‘true believer’, practising Islam as Muhammad commanded”.
And, earlier this month, in the wake of allegations of police corruption in the investigation into the murder of Lawrence, Matt Pavey, a Ukip candidate in Lewisham, tweeted: “Does anyone remember the name Jean Bradley murder unsolved in Acton, London, in 1993. Anyone looking for corruption here? No, thought not.” Pavey tweeted two days later: “Lets all take a moment to remember Jean Bradley stabbed to death on the streets of London in March 1993 and no justice #stephenlawrence.” And again that day he tweeted: “Lets please take a moment to remember Penny Bell stabbed 50 times in London 1991. No justice #stephenlawrence.” Pavey said he was not prepared to comment on his tweets but that there was “no malice” intended.
Gareth Thomas, the shadow minister for Europe, said the tweets should be seen as evidence that Ukip is “not fit to represent the country in Europe”.
The Observer has also learned that Ukip MEPs are employing foreign nationals as parliamentary assistants while the party publicly takes a tough public stance against European immigrants taking British jobs. Last week Farage was involved in an exchange with the BBC’s political editor, Nick Robinson, over the employment of his German wife as his secretary.
Gerard Batten, Ukip MEP for London, has hired foreigners in both his European and UK constituency offices. Pavel Stroilov, from Russia, works in Batten’s London office, while a Polish citizen, Kamila Zarychta, is his accredited assistant in Brussels. Batten said: “I employ people on the basis of whether I think they can do the job.”
Ukip’s East Midlands MEP Roger Helmer, who has an Italian assistant, Francesca Salierno, in Brussels, said: “I absolutely reject the assumption that because we’re opposed to mass immigration it is therefore somehow inconsistent and hypocritical for a Ukip MEP to hire a foreign person.” he said William Dartmouth, Ukip MEP for the south west of England, employs Line Sophie Munk Olsen, a Dane, as one of his four parliamentary assistants. A spokesman said: “He employs four British people in his office as well.”
UKIP is no more professional now that Mike Nattrass has departed than before when he was as embroilled in the racism, corruption and xenophobic extremism that typifies the party.
The pretence at professionalising and cleaning up their act and lies about being non racist and non sectarian are most clearly shown to be disingenuous bunkum when one notes that Paul Weston is still active within the party as is Gerard Batten MEP, when one considers the outrageous incitement to racial hatred lively resultant from the vile racist anti Islamic drivel from Gerard Batten as mirrored by that of Paul Weston.
Merely consider the vile antics of the undeniably corrupt Gerard Batten UKIP MEP who has stood at Nigel Farage’s right hand as a leading member of the party for many years and has not been deselected nor chucked out if only as an ignoramus let alone for his vile comments and total lack of understanding of concepts of justice and the values of decency.
Then consider CLICK HERE
Then consider the odious comments of the noted UKIP member Paul Weston CLICK HERE
 he seletively itemises a story about about the actions of a Bronze Age desert sooth sayer as paedophelia whilst choosing to overlook the marriage in 1367 of the Peer and incumbent of Berkley castle in St. Mary The Virgin Church in Wooton-Under-Edge of Thomas de Berkeley, 5th Baron Berkeley ‘the Magnificent’, to Margaret de Lisle who despite her new husband being 15 was aged 7, 3rd Baroness Lisle (1360–1392), daughter of Warine de Lisle, 2nd Baron Lisle (d.1382) and Margaret Pipard. It is never wise to judge people out of the context in time or society of their lives!
To make the small minded pronouncements about other times and other peoples superstitions and practices based on ones own superstitions and practices of today is foolish in the extreme. As with the practice of both child marriage in the bronze age or the practice of multiple marriage where at the time there was no social service support and a preponderence of females.
Just as the practice of slavery in Africa and the Barbary Coast was well established with African & Arab warlords and traders enslaving individuals and entire tribes whom they on sold to traders for supply to the emerging American market. We hear little of the concept of reparation being paid by these Arab and African ttraders nor of compensation to Britain for the seized who were enslaved in Rome nor later of the slaves captured on the South Coats, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and South & West Wales by the pirates and traders from the Barbary Coast who have become part of Britain’s folk history with the ritual of the ‘Moorish’ dancers, more frequently called Morris Dancers and their practices to lure the young to embarkation to slavery & sale in North Africa.
Unwise as it is to judge out of context we note UKIP has done nothing of consequence to censure Paul Weston nor anything atall to boot the odious rascval & liar Gerard Batten out of the party for peddling his vile superstitions which are inclined to incite race hatred, indeed he is selected as a lead candidate to support Nigel Farage!
Hi,
with the upcoming EU elections on 22-May-2014 I felt it was apposite to revisit the question on the minds of the majority of Brits which tends to stretch from the simple and in my opinion sensible Leave-The-EU option which in the long term would I believe serve our peoples, our Country and our planet best and the unworkable and dishonest idiocy of re-negotiated terms with the EU as put forward by Tories who quite clearly are either hideously ill informed as to how the EU functions or just obscenely dishonest in pretending they can change the EU and get unanimous support amongst the other vassal states – the precondition for any major change!
Revisiting an article of Christopher Bookers from last summer little or nothing has changed – UKIP still haven’t a clue and have absolutely no exit and survival strategy just a clique squabbling like ferrets in a sack to stay on the gravy train, with the aim to get more MEPs elected but with zero vision and less hope of changing ANYTHING having abjectly failed to do so to date, hence their continued failure in domestic politics!
The Torieas were shocked into a debate in The House of Commons by the Independent MEP Nikki Sinclaire who gathered well over 200,000 signatures and forced the debate to occur, a debate in which David Cameron’s Government was confronted with his largest ever rebellion and was thus forced to make an undertaking to hold a referendum, allbeit he hedged his bets as ever.
To carry on the fight for a referendum Nikki Sinclaire formed the ‘We demand A Referendum Now Party’ and is standing for the cause in The West Midlands as an MEP – we can but hope this hard working and refreshingly honest and open MEP is re-elected to continue her patriotic defence of Britain and her constituents.
Sadly UKIP having done absolutely zero to support the cause now see this as an apposite band wagon to jump on to get more income by getting more MEPs! However let us not forget thaty UKIP has no ethical leadership, lacks transparency and has such a poor selection rigging process that already candidates are falling by the wayside, exposed as racists, anti homosexual, Islamaphobic and corrupt.
Let us not forget that of the 19 MEPs UKIP has had elected their titular leader has subsumed almost all power to himself, controls incomes and appoints his wife and mistresses to the staff! Little wonder that of the 19 elected he has fallen out with at least half and the balance are as much use as a soup sandwich having achieved absolutely nothing of note in their period on the gracy train!
Even Ukip has no idea how to get us out of the EU trap
Our politicians are stumbling around in the dark when it comes to EU rules. There is only one way we can renegotiate our position with Europe to our advantage
Fears over trade are forcing us into a frustrating 'consensus’ position with Europe
Fears over trade are forcing us into a frustrating ‘consensus’ position with Europe Photo: Alamy
There is virtually no political issue that generates more ill-informed nonsense than whether or not Britain should stay in the EU. We have those 304 MPs voting for David Cameron’s wish to renegotiate our relationship with the EU and put the results to a referendum no later than 2017. We have Theresa May announcing that she is going to demand a British opt-out from 133 EU regulations on law and order, but then apply to opt in again on 35 of them. We have John Cridland, head of the CBI, repeating yet again the old canard that it would be disastrous for us to think of emulating Norway and Switzerland, the two richest countries in Europe, because although they trade freely with the EU’s single market, they have no say in shaping its rules. On and on goes such grandstanding, not touching reality at any point.
The essence of the problem is that, while the British like some aspects of the EU, other aspects make them deeply resentful, without them ever really understanding the rules or how it works. Thus, for many years, as the EU surges towards “ever closer union”, Britain has, in the words of the late Roy Jenkins, become an ever more “foot-dragging and complaining member”. On one hand, the pollsters report that up to half or more of British voters want us to leave. On the other, we have an establishment “consensus” between most of our politicians, media and big business, claiming that, although the EU in its present form is unsatisfactory and needs drastic “reform”, we must stay in for all the benefits we gain from trading with it, and because it gives us “influence”.
It is this “consensus” position that is so riddled with contradictions that it amounts to no more than multiple wishful thinking. There is no way Mr Cameron could obtain the kind of “à la carte” relationship he hints at, let alone that he could do so if re-elected, in time for a referendum in 2017. First, the rules would necessitate a new treaty, requiring procedures so lengthy that it could not possibly be completed by 2017. Second, the return of powers he claims to want would breach that most sacred principle of EU law, that national powers once surrendered can never be given back.
So, legally and practically, it is impossible that Mr Cameron could get anything of what all those MPs voted for the other day. The only semblance of a realistic understanding of all the issues involved comes from a research paper recently published by the House of Commons Library on what would be involved in a British withdrawal from the EU. This explains, with an authority no MP could muster, that the only way Britain could continue to trade freely within the single market without having to accept so much of the rest of the EU’s political baggage, would be to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.
But this, of course, can only be done by a country giving notice that it wishes to leave the EU. This alone can compel its fellow-members to negotiate with it the kind of new relationship Mr Cameron says he wants. And this he could not rule out more emphatically, as again in a recent interview with El Pais, where he said there was no way he could support a vote for Britain to leave.
Regardless of Mr Cameron’s views, however, the Commons researchers then go on to explain how Britain could continue to enjoy full access to the single market by joining Norway and Switzerland as members of the European Free Trade Area (Efta), or, like Norway, as also a member of the European Economic Area. This is precisely the option Europhiles such as Mr Cridland are so desperate to misrepresent, by falsely claiming that Norway has no influence over the single market’s trading rules. Anyone who argues this has no grasp of how the system works. Not only are Efta members fully consulted in the shaping of single market legislation, but much of it now derives from global organisations above the EU, in which Norway has a voice in its own right, exercising more influence than Britain, which too often has to allow the EU to speak for it.
But it is this argument – playing on the fear that unless we remain in the EU we will be without influence and even excluded from trading with it – that would be made the centrepiece of the campaign in any referendum on Britain’s continued membership. So relentlessly would it be put over by supporters of the “consensus”, given full voice by the BBC, Open Europe and others, that it is almost a foregone conclusion that the stay-in vote would win the day.
What has so far been almost wholly lacking from the debate on all this is any properly worked-out alternative vision of what Britain’s future in the world could be if we were to regain our independence by leaving. Equally lacking, although it is again explored in the Commons research paper, is any recognition of just how incredibly complicated a British withdrawal from the EU would be, because we are enmeshed with it by such a mountain of laws and other legal obligations. To disentangle all this would present a challenge so immense that it could only be brought off by a government fully committed to the task and fired up by a vision of how well Britain could thrive outside the EU. This would require a degree of political will which so far simply doesn’t exist.
One of the odd features of this debate is that the only party committed to a British exit from the EU, Ukip, appears to have little understanding of how this could, in practice, be achieved – let alone a positive vision of how well Britain could fare outside it, to counterbalance the relentless defeatism and negativity with which the “consensus” establishment would seek to terrify us into staying in. Too many Ukip supporters take equal refuge from reality by pretending that we could simply wave a magic wand by repealing the European Communities Act. With one mighty bound we would be free. Sorted. These are children.
I confess that when I read that Commons research paper, although it did not say anything new, I did end up depressed. Its calm, common-sense reviewing of the real issues once again brings home just how inane most of the public debate over Britain’s membership of the EU has become. Without the vision and the will to work for a positive alternative, it seems we are doomed just to limp helplessly on as a “foot-dragging and complaining member” of the “European project”, as it itself staggers helplessly on into a drably visionless and ever more uncertain future. So saying, I am off for a few days to Italy to look at 15th-century paintings, from the time when Europe was still in that frenzy of creativity and intellectual engagement that was to make its civilisation the glory of the world.
One thing that has changed since Christopher wrote this article is that a wave of optimism did sweep through the informed as the IEA announced the BrExit prize offering £100K to the winner who came up with the very best and most workable exit strategy to follow the day Britain was announced it would Leave-The-EU.
For a little more detail CLICK HERE
Sadly it transpired that it would seem to have been rigged to suit, it would seem, just one judge who presented a paper immediately before the closing date and would seem to have had a hand in ensuring the apparently pre advised competitors who upheld his unworkable and ill informed paper passed to the final round.
The eventual winner chosen, it would seem by preselection, put forward a particularly ill informed paper which offerd a clearly unworkable solution which was backed by very little refertencing and researching apparent.
To be fair to the IEA they were clearly embarrassed by the exposure of Roger Bootle’s apparent dishonesty and corruption of the process that they withdrew his voting rights as a judge, however the lacked the ethics to denounce him and ensure those who seem to have, either unwittingly or deliberately, cheated were debarred.
I would hazard a guess that there was a pre scan of the 17 finalists and it was suggested that the judges should only bother reading the efforts of the predetermined submissions.
Perhaps I am being a little too harsh, but I did read every submission published and they were weak and unworkable and ill informed thus astonishingly lightweight for  matter of such gravitas.
You may by all means track down the chosen ones via The IEA’s web site and judge for yourself but when compared with the submission I believe to have been the best I would contend there was no competition and even Roger Bootle’s effort was lame in the extreme.
Judge for yourself CLICK HERE
Dr. Richard North’s submission CLICK HERE
It would seem the prize itself has sunk without trace as when you make a Google Search of the issue the media have largely ignored it, no doubt having reached the same conclusion I have here proffered. Further The IEA themselves seem embarrassed by their own apparent dishonesty and have seemingly, having been caught out, dropped the matter like a hot potato in the hope their apparent corruption is overlooked and will not damage their income stream from gullible donors!
IF my conclusion is in some way flawed then perhaps The IEA would care to explain why they, having squandered £100K of donor’s money on their lightweight and unworkable winner have failed to take the matter forward!
Nigel Farage is a phoney. Scrutinise him and he’ll crumble
Nigel Farage laughs up at rain
Campaigning in the rain: Nigel Farage in Dudley, 25 April 2014. Photograph: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images
Allow me to sketch you a portrait of a political leader. Even by the lax standards of the powerful, he is England’s greatest living hypocrite. He courts popularity by warning that tens of millions from the dole queues of Europe are coming to take British jobs, while employing his German wife as his secretary. He denounces “the political class” for living like princes at the taxpayers’ expense while pocketing every taxpayer-funded allowance he can claim for himself, his wife and his colleagues.
He says he represents “ordinary people”. But he is a public school-educated former banker, whose policies will help him and his kind. He claims he is the voice of “common sense”, while allying with every variety of gay-hater, conspiracy crackpot, racist, chauvinist and pillock. The only sense he and his followers have in common is a fear of anyone who is not like them.
You might expect that Britain’s famously aggressive media would tear into his multiple deceits. Yet so tame has their treatment of Nigel Farage been, so indulgent and complicit, viewers were surprised when the BBC‘s political editor found the courage last week to raise a timorous voice and ask him why he was employing his German wife rather than giving a British job to a British worker. Broadcasters are ferocious when they tackle mainstream politicians, but are as eager to please as wet-tongued labradors when they meet Ukip. To understand why, you need to grasp how the political culture of modern democracies encourages both conformism and zealotry.
Broadcasters say they give Britain’s representative of Europe’s rightwing wave such prominence because Farage is good on television: a cheeky and witty guest rather than a formulaic political pro. As Hollywood doesn’t cast ugly actors as romantic leads and radio producers seldom hire presenters with stammers, accusing broadcasters of double standards because they favour people who are good on television feels as absurd as accusing Brendan Rodgers of bias because he picks gifted footballers to play for Liverpool or publishers of prejudice because they commission authors who write well.
Media managers would have every right to sneer at bland “professional politicians”, and promote exciting alternatives, had they not helped create the soundbite-spouting robots they are so keen to denounce. With the arrival of 24-hour news, they had to fill hours of empty schedules. Every ill-considered statement by a politician became a “gaffe”; every disagreement with the leader a “split”. Ambitious politicians responded by saying nothing that might be used against them. Social media and mobile phones have accelerated their desire to march in step with the herd. Now a public figure must behave as if they are on camera whenever they are in a public space.
I am not trying to excuse our leaders. Political parties, private companies and public bureaucracies need to relax if they want a hearing in the 21st century, and stop treating the smallest deviation from the party line as an “unprofessional” affront. But it is rich of broadcasters to preach against professional politics when they were its midwives, and sinister of them to promote fanaticism as a cure for the boredom it generates.
For in the kingdom of the bland, the intolerant man is king. British and US TV have turned newspaper pundits into minor celebrities: a curious addition to the Z-list that makes little sense until you realise that the pundit is free to posture and foam and provide the gladiatorial aggression that will keep the audience from reaching for the remote. Extremist politicians such as Nigel Farage and George Galloway serve the same purpose. They don’t have to worry about breaking party lines because their parties are their own private personality cults, which believe whatever they tell them to believe.
Mainstream politicians, who have abandoned plain speaking, should blame themselves when viewers turn away, of course. But they cannot be blamed for the broadcasters’ abnegation of the basic journalistic responsibility to ask questions without fear or favour.
To pick one of hundreds of examples, Ukip had a party political broadcast featuring “ordinary people” last week. A builder complained that foreigners had taken his job. As you might have predicted, the builder turned out to be an obsessional creep, who thought that Ed Miliband wasn’t British because his parents were refugees from Hitler. My friends in the anti-fascist group Hope Not Hate have files the thickness of telephone directories on how Ukip recruits every species of bigot from women-haters to neo-Nazis. They are open for journalists to inspect. But when Farage announced that he was suspending the builder from his party, the media were satisfied and did not ask him why he attracts and retains thousands more like him. They would never let a mainstream leader escape so lightly.
The English have a strong desire to avoid seriousness, a character trait that makes England both an attractive and a remarkably gullible country. We too easily dismiss people as performers putting on a show. “He can’t really mean that,” we say as the far-left politician salutes Saddam Hussein after he has ordered the genocide of the Kurds, or defends Bashar al-Assad as his forces torture civilians. “He isn’t being serious,” we say, as the far-right politician declares his admiration for Vladimir Putin and signs up members who want to kick out the blacks.
Experience has taught English media managers in particular to believe that no one means what they say. Editors demand opinion pieces that confirm their readers’ prejudices and find willing hacks who will write as required, regardless of whether they believe what they say or not. In broadcasting, BBC researchers call and ask thousands of journalists and intellectuals to take a genuinely held belief and reduce it to absurdity. “Would you come on and say that 2+2=5?” they ask. You refuse. They hang up and phone round until they find someone so desperate for attention that they will say it.
When considering Ukip, we should remember the advice of Lord Renwick, a Foreign Office mandarin and Labour peer. He told young diplomats from good families that their background made them suckers for “the Wykehamist fallacy”. When they went abroad, they were in danger of believing that foreign potentates merely struck blood-curdling poses for effect. For all the bombast, they would think that, underneath, these must be civilised men with an ironic sensibility who might have been educated at Winchester. “They haven’t,” said Renwick. “Actually, they’re a bunch of thugs.”
The same should be said of Ukip.
Now Ukip’s second poster boy builder is revealed to be an IRISH actor as Farage battles to contain row over supporter’s tweets about ‘evil’ Islam
• ‘Builder’ seen begging in the street is Dave O’Rourke from Dublin
• Featured in £1.5million poster campaign against EU immigration
• Gaffe follows suspension of Andre Lampitt who wore builder’s hat in TV ad
• The Zimbabwean branded the Prophet Mohammed a paedophile on Twitter
Ukip is battling to rescue its flagship £1.5million ad campaign today, after it emerged a builder who featured in a poster complaing about foreign workers is actually an actor from Ireland.
The gaffe emerged just hours after the party suspended a second man who appeared in an election broadcast video wearing a hard hat for a series of tweets which condemned Islam as ‘evil and branded the Prophet Mohammed a paedophile.
Ukip leader Nigel Farage today admitted ‘something went wrong’ with the party’s vetting system.
Still smiling: Nigel Farage is faring well in the polls ahead of the European elections next month
The row comes despite attempts to improve the party’s image and prevent a repeat of last year’s local election campaign which was dominated by controversy about the outburst and behaviour of candidates.
On Tuesday Mr Farage unveiled a series of hard-hitting anti-immigration posters as part of its campaign for the European elections on May 22.
 One featured a builder begging on the street with the message: ‘EU policy at work. British workers are hit hard by unlimited cheap labour.’
But today it emerged the man is not a builder at all, but actor Dave O’Rourke from Dublin.
HOW UKIP SAW ITS £1.5MILLION CAMPAIGN RUN INTO TROUBLE
The launch of the anti-immigration poster campaign on Tuesday was supposed to mark the start of a new, more professional era for Ukip.
The award-winning Edinburgh-based advertising agency Family – which has worked for the BBC, Debenhams and the Conservatives – helped produce the campaign funded by ex-Tory donor Paul Sykes.
But critics branded the slogans ‘racist’, even before revelations about the people in the poster and TV adverts plunged the party into turmoil.
Builder posted offensive tweets
Zimbabwean decorator Andre Lampitt appeared in the Ukip party political broadcast to complain about the impact of immigration in Britain
Builder in TV advert posts racist tweets
Zimbabwean decorator Andre Lampitt posed in a builder’s hard hat to complain that ‘lads from Eastern Europe’ were undercutting him.
But on Twitter he posted a series of offensive comments,  claiming Ed Miliband is ‘not British’, condemned Islam as ‘evil’, branding the Prophet Mohammed a paedophile and saying he wanted Africans to ‘kill themselves off’.
UKIP RESPONSE: Nigel Farage: ‘Repellent was the word we used, and I will stick with that. We have put in place a vetting procedure and something has gone wrong.’
‘Voter’ is Ukip events manager
Lizzy Vaid appears as a voter from Devon in the new Ukip manifesto, but actually works for the party
Lizzy Vaid appears in a full-page photograph as a voter from Devon, but is actually Ukip’s events manager and an assistant to the party leader.
UKIP RESPONSE: Nigel Farage: ‘The fact that Lizzie Laid is half-Indian and works for us is as far as we are concerned a non-issue. Most parties use actors. We use Ukippers.’
‘Jobless builder’ is an Irish actor
Ukip faced embarrassment today after it emerged the builder in its latest anti-immigration advert was an actor, Dave O'Rourke, who is from Ireland
Eye-catching poster shows a builder begging on the street with the message: ‘EU policy at work. British workers are hit hard by unlimited cheap labour.’
But he is Dave O’Rourke, an actor from Ireland who moved to Britain 10 years ago.
UKIP RESPONSE: Director of communications Patrick O’Flynn: ‘The vast majority of people used in political poster campaigns are actors. It is totally standard practice.’
On his profile on the acting website StarNow, he boasts of being able to speak in several accents including Irish, South African, English, Scottish and German.
He says: ‘I’m originally from Dublin, Living in the UK 10 years. I’m currently acting full time and looking to build my portfolio.
‘I’m hard working and fully committed to a role and my character to give the best performance I can deliver.’
His CV includes a part as ‘a troubled youth with psychotic tendencies’ in Saltwater, a 2001 Irish drama with In Bruges and Harry Potter star Brendan Gleeson.
He has since taken part in two drama courses in Edinburgh and played an HMRC officer in the 2008 drama Adulthood.
People from Ireland are able to move freely to the UK under the immigration rules which Mr Farage is campaigning against.
To add to the embarrassment, only this week Mr Farage boasted: ‘Most parties use actors. We use Ukippers.’
It followed the revelation that ‘Lizzy Vaid from Devon’ who featured in the party’s manifesto is actually Ukip’s events manager based in London.
Today Ukip director of communications Patrick O’Flynn insisted: ‘The vast majority of people used in political poster campaigns are actors. It is totally standard practice.’
The gaffe comes after Ukip moved to suspend Andre Lampit, a decorator who appeared in a party political broadcast.
Mr Lampitt had previously condemned Mr Miliband as ‘not a real Brit’ and suggested Africans should ‘kill themselves off’.
In a series of posts on Twitter, he said he loathed the charity Oxfam and welcomed Aids outbreaks in Africa, saying: ‘Inner peace will come when Aids does what it should and reduce  African density.’
Like Mr Farage, he said he admired Russian leader Vladimir Putin, adding: ‘At least Putin loves his country. David Cameron does not love Britain, he loves the EU.’
Asked about Mr Lampitt’s comments, Mr Farage said: ‘Repellent was the word we used, and I will stick with that. We have got the European elections happening, we have also got local elections and we have got 2,234 candidates standing for Ukip.
‘It’s our biggest ever push in local elections. We have put in place a vetting procedure and something has gone wrong.’
Pressed on whether he viewed Mr Lampitt’s comments as racist, Mr Farage told BBC Breakfast: ‘I think they probably are, yes.’
He added: ‘Someone has made a mistake, so I’m going to have an investigation into this and somebody must be disciplined for this.’
Ukip said it was ‘shocked’ by his views, which will embarrass the party as it prepares for local elections next month – with Mr Lampitt standing as a councillor in Merton, South London.
The builder, who describes himself as ‘born British in Rhodesia’, was one of five supporters hand-picked to appear in a prime-time television campaign starting this week.
He was featured in the broadcast criticising immigration from the EU, saying: ‘Since the lads from Eastern Europe are prepared to work for a lot less than anybody else, I’ve found it a real struggle.’
Yesterday, the party said it was suspending him after discovering he had expressed ‘repellent’ views in a series of potentially unlawful messages on Twitter over recent months.
In one tweet Mr Lampitt claimed that Islam was not a religion and called it an ‘evil organisation respecting a prophet who as a pedo.’[sic]
He added: ‘All Muslims need to leave Europe… or denounce their pathetic satanic religion.’
UKIP leader Nigel Farage admits: ‘something has gone wrong’
Another message insisted: ‘Most Nigerians are generally bad people… I  grew up in Africa and dare anyone to prove me wrong.’
He suggested Africans should be ‘left to ‘kill themselves off’ and suggested people should ‘get over’ slavery, which he said was an ‘act of war’.
‘His racist views might even make the BNP wince with embarrassment’
Tim Farron, Lib Dem president
Condemning the Labour leader, he said: ‘Miliband is not a real Brit. I  hope he never gets to be PM! He was only born here.’
In another message, he said Mr Miliband, whose father Ralph was born in Belgium to Polish parents, was ‘Polish, not British’.
He also suggested examination of statistics on rape would reveal a racial bias among attackers, and in another message declared: ‘Enoch Powell was right’.
A Ukip spokesman said: ‘We are deeply shocked that Mr Lampitt has expressed such repellent views.
The UK Independence Party political broadcast
‘His membership of the party has been suspended immediately pending a full disciplinary process.’
However, it was not clear whether Mr Lampitt can be removed from the party’s list of council candidates in Merton, because nominations closed yesterday.
The timing of the row is unfortunate for Mr Farage, who has this week rejected claims from some Labour MPs that his party’s latest election billboards on immigration are racist.
Ukip had suggested its candidates would be put through more rigorous checks following a series of controversies over the views of some on race, gay marriage and other issues.
It faces questions about how it failed to check messages posted over several months and available for all to see on Mr Lampitt’s Twitter page.
Last night his account appeared to have been deleted and he could not be reached.
Lib Dem president Tim Farron said: ‘I cannot believe Ukip did not check the comments of this man before they used him in their broadcast.
‘His racist views might even make the BNP wince with embarrassment. A week after the French National Front opened their arms to Ukip, with comments like these it’s easy to see why they did.
‘Ukip might wrap themselves in the flag, but these comments are deeply offensive to anyone with decent British values.’
‘We are deeply shocked that Mr Lampitt has expressed such repellent views’
Ukip spokesman
Mr Farage promised to eliminate ‘Walter Mittys’ from his candidate list after Ukip defence spokesman Godfrey Bloom – one of his closest allies – quit following outbursts in which he described foreign nations as ‘Bongo Bongo Land’ and women as ‘sluts’.
The Ukip leader said he would ensure only ‘reliable, steady, solid people’ could run for election.
Labour’s Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper described Mr Lampitt’s tweets as nasty and divisive.
She said on Twitter: ‘Appalling tweets from Ukip member chosen to front campaign. Ukip should reflect very carefully on the way they encourage nasty divisive views.’
This staggeringly unprofessional behaviour from UKIP and the endless repetition of this sort of incompetence and the serial examples of financial profligacy and self serving dishonesty and such events as paying wives and mistresses wityh tax payers money and holding overseas bank accounts to seemingly avoid the taxes of Britain and on and on with candidates and councillors embroilled in racism and internal squabbling it is little wonder the British public have not entrusted UKIP with a role in domestic politics.
Little wonder that after 21 years of such behaviour UKIP still has no MPs and has never even come close to having a UKIP MP and has so very few Councillors yet is seen as an appropriate dustbin of an unsavoury nature for protesters to use as a dustbin to register their opprobrium at the body politic in the politics of the EU which are seen as largely irrelevant in Britain where the electorate realise there is no value in MEPs and where there is a near total lack of any basic concepts of democracy.
It would seem that the more odious the dustbin the more effective it is to show ones contempt at politicians!
UKIP clearly fills that role in EU elections!
