Hi,

UKIP’s latest flip-flop just left Tommy Robinson with his trousers round his ankles

UKIP’s latest flip-flop just left Tommy Robinson with his trousers round his ankles

On Sunday 9 September, UKIP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decided to hold a debate on letting far-right ideologue Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, aka Tommy Robinson, join the party.

Yaxley-Lennon said he wanted to join the party. UKIP leader Gerard Batten said he wanted Yaxley-Lennon to join the party. Forty-eight hours later, the NEC stuffed him.

Flip-flop

Party chair Tony McIntyre originally approved the so-called ‘Tommy Robinson motion’ on Sunday 9 September. But just two days later the party decided to block the debate on a technicality.

McIntyre said he axed the motion because only two UKIP members had proposed it, not a full branch. This is apparently in “contravention of the Party Rule Book”.

In a statement to UKIP members, McIntyre wrote:

I have made it a point during my tenure as Chairman of the Party to adhere strictly to the Party Rules, as they are the backbone of the Party.

I believe strongly in freedom of speech and would suggest that this motion is presented to the next Autumn Party Conference via the correct channels.

I take full responsibility for this error in judgement as it is mine and mine alone.

It looks like for now, UKIP’s NEC has thrown Yaxley-Lennon under the bus and dashed his hopes of joining a large political party.

Islamophobic goals

But there are still calls among the party’s ultra-right to get around McIntyre’s most recent ruling. They’ll try to argue that they put forward the proposal for Yaxley-Lennon’s membership as an ‘Emergency Motion’.

Deputy chair of UKIP’s youth wing Reece Coombes is one of those UKIP members. He seconded the proposal put forward by UKIP’s family and children spokesperson Alan Craig. Coombes often writes in defence of Yaxley-Lennon for the party’s blog Kipper Central, where he enjoys referring to himself in the third person.

According to Coombes, the party’s rulebook allows members to submit emergency motions for discussion at the party conference after the regular deadline. And individuals, not just branches, can make such proposals.

The motion’s instigator Alan Craig spoke to Coombes in Kipper Central:

It is puzzling that party chairman Tony McIntyre has cancelled the conference debate on the ‘Tommy Robinson’ motion having only just approved it on Sunday, as nothing procedurally or otherwise has changed.

Reece Coombes and I submitted the motion on 31st August (a) as individuals, and (b) significantly after the deadline for branch motions. It was plain to see on both counts, therefore, that our motion did not qualify as a normal branch motion and we did not submit it as such…

On Sunday he rightly approved the motion. He has today unapproved it. What caused him to change his mind?

Infighting reaches fever-pitch

The answer is UKIP infighting.

After Craig announced he’d submitted the motion to the NEC on September 6, an unnamed UKIP spokesperson quickly called the statement “sensationalist fake news” and said there was no chance of it passing. Then the NEC passed it. And then redacted it.

In fact, several senior UKIP members, including former leader Nigel Farage, have raised concerns over bringing Yaxley-Lennon into the party, with NEC member Ben Walker saying he would have to “consider [his] position”. UKIP’s Bristol branch went so far as to state that it would disband if the party accepted the Islamophobe.

But the main reason for keeping Yaxley-Lennon at arms’ length isn’t about morality. It has more to do with tactics and shoring up the Eurosceptic vote.

Shoring up the Brexit vote

In an LBC segment on September 10, Farage highlighted a recent statement made by former Brexit minister Steve Baker. Apparently, some 80 Tory MPs could vote down Theresa May’s Chequers plan in parliament, with Baker predicting a “catastrophic split” amongst the Conservatives.

Pointing to infighting within Labour, Farage said that instead of focusing on Yaxley-Lennon’s membership, UKIP should be trying to lure dissatisfied Brexit voters back to the party:

On Brexit, the one party that should be benefitting hugely from this, should be UKIP.

It should be picking up Tory voters and Labour voters.

But instead, they are going to have a debate as to whether Tommy Robinson should be allowed to join UKIP.

I think UKIP are missing a bit of a trick here. There are millions of very unhappy Euro-sceptic voters out there in both parties!

Not ‘if’ but ‘when’

The ongoing saga of UKIP’s flip-flop on Yaxley-Lennon is leading to some spectacular self-owns. And for many, it will be a delight to see the allies of the English Defence League founder damage his reputation.

It looks like UKIP has decided – in the short-term – to drop populist Islamophobia and shore up the anti-immigration Brexit vote. This may mean that UKIP ‘moderates’ have put the brakes on the party’s transformation into a National Front for the 21st Century.

But don’t get complacent. While it might make tactical sense for UKIP to focus on Brexit right now, Gerard Batten and his ultra-right allies are still in charge of the party.

And if that remains the case, Yaxley-Lennon’s membership in UKIP is not so much a matter of ‘if’, but a question of ‘when’. And that should worry us all.

Hi,

UKIP AM Caroline Jones quits party over ‘far-right move’

  • 12 September 2018
JONES AM, Caroline 01

A former leader of the UKIP group in the Welsh Assembly has resigned from the party.

Caroline Jones claimed UKIP leader Gerard Batten was alienating his members by moving the party to the far right.

The AM for South Wales West, who will now sit as an independent, said UKIP was taking “a direction that I’m not comfortable with”.

But Mr Batten said her statement was “politically correct twaddle”.

Mrs Jones outsted Neil Hamilton as leader of UKIP in the assembly in May and served until she lost a leadership election to Gareth Bennett in August.

Her resignation means the UKIP group has four AMs left from the seven elected to the Senedd in 2016.

Mrs Jones said she does not “feel welcome in the assembly group” and has not been “treated equally or as favourably” as Mr Bennett or Neil Hamilton, the first UKIP group leader.

She alleged a leadership election was called to get her out of the job, and questioned whether the way it was held adhered to the party’s constitution.

BATTEN, Gerard 11

Gerard Batten has taken the party in “a direction I’m not comfortable with”, Caroline Jones said

Mrs Jones told BBC Wales Mr Batten – who has been highly critical of Islam – was changing the party “to a more far-right position, which a lot of the long-standing members are finding quite unfavourable, including myself”.

“I never joined the party to be part of a far-right organisation – I joined the party because I wanted to come out of the European Union,” she said.

“Gerard Batten should listen to all sides and try to mediate and bring people together, as opposed to alienating them.

“He’s brought a lot of views into UKIP which people, the more moderate members, of the party have asked him to tone down.”

‘Shambolic election’

Mrs Jones said the leadership election was “shambolic from beginning to end”, citing rule changes which meant more people were able to vote than expected.

She alleged she had been subject of “misogyny”, claiming examples of a meeting where she was allegedly told to “shut up”, one where she had a pair of glasses thrown at her, and another where she was told to stop taking minutes.

Mrs Jones said: “I never liked the way that certain members in the assembly conducted themselves in their attitude towards female members.”

JONES AM, Caroline 01
Media captionGareth Bennett said it would be easier for the UKIP group to operate without Caroline Jones

Mr Batten was appointed leader earlier this year, after former UKIP leader Henry Bolton was sacked.

The MEP said: “I have brought the party back from financial meltdown, raised funds, raised membership numbers, and raised UKIP in the polls. Ms Jones has contributed nothing that I am aware of.”

He added: “Her statement is politically correct twaddle to disguise the fact that Mrs Jones is politically ineffective. I wish her well languishing in the outer realms of irrelevance.”

UKIP assembly group leader Gareth Bennett said he was “not totally surprised” by Mrs Jones’s exit and suggested people in the party who do not agree with its direction should “get off the train and then make it easier for the group to operate”.

He said UKIP was not moving to the far right but said not everyone in the party agreed with Mr Batten’s direction.

Mr Bennett denied the misogyny accusations – he confirmed that Caroline Jones had been told to “shut up” at a group meeting but said it was not related to her gender.

“There was poor behaviour from probably two or three people in that room at that meeting,” he said.

“I’m supremely confident that the group will eventually cohere.”

Neil Hamilton has called on Mrs Jones to resign her regional list seat and allow another UKIP member to become an AM, but she told BBC Radio Wales that she would not stand down.

Under the regional list system used to elect 20 of the 60 assembly members, voters choose a party rather than a specific candidate.

When a regional AM resigns, they are usually succeeded by the person who was next on the list for their party at the previous assembly election in that region.

I hear rumours from a usually well informed insider that Michelle Brown, currently Ukip AM for North Wales is likely to quit representing them shortly and represent her own views as an Independent.

Although Gareth Bennett is expected to run for leadership of the National Party at the next Ukip Leadership election, but he may find a snag in his plan as it is likely that the hapless Gerard Batten may well step down and not seek re-election after the crass ineptitude of his period standing in as leader nationally.

If Batten does cut and run it is expected he will back Mike Hookem for the leadership, well the field is staggeringly poor as anyone who has followed Ukip will appreciate – it is clear there is not a single individual with the relevant experience or visible qualities needed.

Regards,

Greg_L-W.
