UKIP battle: Farage and HamiltonPanicking Nigel Farage has launched a desperate attempt to block ex-MP Neil Hamilton’s latest comeback bid.
The UKIP leader fears the bow tie-wearing former Tory will wreck the party’s chances when voters go to the polls in May.
He has waged an internal war to thwart Mr Hamilton’s return to frontline politics.
But insiders warn the vicious infighting threatens to derail UKIP’s poll hopes as the countdown to crunch elections intensifies.
UKIP Deputy Chairman Mr Hamilton was previously forced to pull out of two contests to become the party’s parliamentary candidate in key seats.

Now he hopes to secure a top spot on the “list” for the Welsh Assembly – all but guaranteeing him a seat and his first election success for 24 years.
But Mr Farage last week revealed party members would be given control of which candidates make the list, a form of proportional voting.
Insiders revealed it was a plot to hammer Mr Hamilton’s chances of making the final cut.
A senior UKIP source told the Mirror: “The thing with Hamilton is that every time someone tries to flush the s*** down the toilet he keeps coming back up.
“Every single time his name is anywhere near an election it becomes a ******* s*** storm. Is there any election he won’t stand for?”
Party officials have been locked in furious behind-the-scenes rows over Mr Hamilton’s future.
He lost his Parliamentary seat in 1997 after the cash-for-questions sleaze row.
He always denied any wrongdoing.
In November 2014 he was forced to pull out of the race to be UKIP’s general election candidate for Boston and Skegness, Lincs.
A month later, he quit the contest for UKIP’s nomination in South Basildon and East Thurrock, Essex.
He hopes the Welsh Assembly elections will finally deliver the comeback he craves.
Mr Hamilton was not available for comment but his wife Christine told the Mirror: “Neil never comments on ill-informed, anonymous tittle-tattle and especially not when it is foul mouthed.”
Tory turncoat Mark Reckless, who lost his seat last May, also hopes to resurrect his career with UKIP in Wales.
The source revealed there was “consternation” over the pair’s power bid – and the latest row threatens UKIP’s surge in the principality.
The party is set to claim up to nine seats and deny Labour control of the 60-seat Assembly.
But a UKIP official said: “It doesn’t look great that Hamilton, with all his baggage, comes over the Severn Bridge to try and cleanse his CV.

“It could cost us votes, particularly when they see him with his bow tie. He won’t go down well in the places we expect to win votes.”Sources hailed the decision by UKIP’s ruling National Executive Committee to give members the final say over positions on the list as a victory for Mr Farage and a blow to Mr Hamilton.
Handing control to members jeopardises his chances of success, they said.
Mr Hamilton faces a huge struggle to win over grassroots activists.
Announcing members were in charge of selection, Mr Farage said last week: “I have long argued that the UKIP members in Wales should get the final say on who represents our party in the Welsh Assembly elections.
“These elections in May are our best opportunity to make a breakthrough into UK domestic politics.”
