~~~~~~~~~~#########~~~~~~~~~~
Hi,
it does seem like a busy week!
Tunisia flight from Brussels on Thursday – a series of meetings packed into 12 hour days and back to Brussels on Sunday evening via Geneva.
Monday in Brussels with Constituency work & then EU meetings and a Tunisia debrief in the evening!
Meet with one of the main high distribution Sunday papers Tuesday. Meetings in the EU and fly back to the Constituency office in the West Midlands for a staff briefing.
Home – fresh clothes catch up on correspondence and clearly post to blog.
Wednesday morning fly back to Brussels for more meetings and to finalise publication of the Tunisia report in a Brussels magazine. Then EUrostar to London to meet up with staff for a final briefing for Thursday and stay overnight with staff for an early start in Parliament Square.
But here is the outline Report on Tunisia from Sinclaire’s blog:
North Africa‘s First Revolution Very Fragile
Nikki Sinclaire MEP reports back on her visit to Tunisia.
Three weeks after the Tunisian people ousted President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, I was delighted to attend talks in Tunis with the new interim government as part of an ad hoc parliamentary delegation.
Nikki SINCLAIRE MEP & PM, Mohamed Ghannouchi of TUNISIA
The delegation met with Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi, the Foreign Minister, Ahmed Ounais, the Defence Minister, Abdelkrim Zbidi, and the Minister of Justice, Lazhar Karoui Chebbi. Unfortunately a meeting that had been scheduled with the Minister of the Interior could not take place. We were also able to meet with the leaders of the major political forces. We were very pleased to note the decisions taken on a general amnesty, legalisation of political parties and NGOs, accession to the Statute of the International Criminal Court, and to the UN Convention against Torture.
We also held meetings with representatives of civil society organisations, trade unions and professional associations. The importance of a strong civil society is generally considered a vital prerequisite in developing and maintaining a strong and healthy democracy.
Just as vital, is a free and independent media. After 23 years of authoritarian rule journalists in Tunisia are savouring their freedom, with many senior editors being pressured to resign in order to make way for the new order.
Our task was to ascertain how we could aid and show our support for the democratic process and to the 10 million people of Tunisia.
This revolution is the people’s revolution, and emanated from the utter despair that led a man, Mohamed Bouazizi on December 17th to burn himself to death. He wasn’t a terrorist; he did not want to harm anyone else, it seems that he felt that life without the oxygen of democracy was suffocating his core being.
Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, President of Tunisia ...Image via Wikipedia
President Ben Ali
Events culminated on January 14th in mass protests that led President Ben Ali to flee the country and to seek refuge in Saudi Arabia after 23 years of dictatorship.
It has been dubbed the Jasmine Revolution, in Persian ´yasmin´ means ‘gift of God’, but this revolution was a mortal one, a secular revolution borne of frustration.
During our visit, other than the occasional sighting of Army trucks, barbed wire and the curfew there was actually little evidence of revolution, and the infrastructure, electricity, water, food, petrol was all functioning. The delegation encountered some demonstrations outside government offices by people who were unhappy at the speed of new legislation on for example a General Amnesty to political prisoners.
The feeling amongst Civil Society leaders is that people were concerned about the sustainability of the revolution. They felt that although the head of the old regime was removed its body is still very much in place.
The Constitution the former dictator put in place in 1987 is still being adhered to and has allowed most of the old government to stay in place including the Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi. He explained his position, telling us that it would be wrong for him to desert a sinking ship. He paid tribute to the country’s youth, 35% of whom hold university degrees, extolling their patriotism and their confidence which he said would be needed in the immense task ahead.
Nikki SINCLAIRE & Lyadh Ben Achour Ch. TUNISIA Political Reform Commission
Because of the revolution, Tunisia’s international credit rating has been downgraded; the tourism industry that accounts for 17% of foreign currency and 40% of GDP has been devastated. The Minister of Defence, Abdelkarim Zbidi went to great pains to assure us that the situation was safe for tourists.
The Prime Minister told me that EU aid given to the old regime had been used on economic reforms but evidently the people of Tunisia did not see or feel the benefit. I am calling for an investigation into where this aid went, and how it was used.
Strikes are becoming a problem, as the people tired of being exploited on low wages are keen to exercise their new found freedoms. But with any freedoms comes responsibility, economic growth must be taken one step at a time and increasing labour costs are a threat to exports and to Tunisia’s vital service industry.
The Security situation in Tunisia is not critical but it remains uncertain. The Military played a pivotal role in the revolution and retains the trust of the people. I am minded of John F. Kennedy’s quote ´Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.´
The Minister of Defence, Mr Zbidi, who wants to resign his role as soon as possible, is keen to make sure the revolution is not stolen or abused during this `fragile and precarious period.´ He was critical of France as were others we met, and felt that the initial reaction of Sarkozy’s government was mixed.  He was also critical of the EU saying that it was “offering a little bit to eat with more later”, and referred to the slow and uncertain response by Cathy Ashton.
Mr Zbidi hopes that Tunisia will be given enhanced status with the EU as four of the six conditions were now validated. The death penalty and women’s rights of inheritance remain contentious issues. Addressing women’s rights is very important, as enhancing women’s role in society may be seen as a counter to the ever present threat of fundamentalism: the Islamist Party is amongst the best organised of political actors.
We met with the Minister of Justice, Lazhar Karoui Chebbi who told us that “Justice was the cornerstone of civilisation” He was keen that a new image of the country be transmitted with a strong justice system that guarantees the freedom of the citizens.
Nikki SINCLAIRE at One of the many meetings at The Presidential Palace Tunisia.
There are over 2000 magistrates in Tunisia, 1800 practising generally with 200 working on the Court of accounts or upper courts, and it is admitted that problems of corruption in the judicial system need to be addressed.
There can be no doubt that 23 years of Ben Ali’s regime will have an effect on future elections. However, in my opinion it would be impractical to wait for a new constitution to be formed before having full elections. Tunisia needs a reforming figure with an electoral mandate who can oversee the formation of a new constitution removing the shackles of the old, engaging with all sectors of civil society.
Whilst there is clearly just cause for optimism, we must not forget that more than 200 people have been killed during the disturbances that have accompanied this long-awaited transition towards democracy. It is important that those sacrifices were not in vain.
Tragically, there is still violence on the streets of Tunisia; during our visit four people were killed at a demonstration following an attack on a police station, and whilst travelling home on Sunday we learned of another death in the central town of Kebili.
That is a fact that should weigh heavily on France, Italy and other nations that supported the regime of Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.
UKIP As Ever Unlucky In Its Choices of staff & leadership now shows its political aptitude with comments regarding the murder of Michaela Harte in Mauritius!
I guess it could happen to any party – BUT IT DOESN’T with such % regularity!!
Hi,
UKIP does seem to have an uncanny knack of attracting some vile people – not content with specimens like, Tom Wise MEP, Douglas Denny, Mick McGough, Mark Croucher, Annabelle Fuller, Andrew Smith, Derek Clarke MEP, David Bannerman MEP, Stuart Agnew MEP, Godfrey Bloom MEP, Marta Andreasen MEP – all of whom have proved to be liars, cheats and/or corrupt, with only 14 UKIP elected councillors and only 2 remaining MEPs who have not sold out to The EU and racism, anti Judaism and the gravy train corruption of The vile Pan EU Political EFD Group of EUro Trash – Even in Ireland UKIP has problems!
UKIP man supports Michaela rant girl
Sunday, 30 January 2011
Former newspaper photographer Susanne Morrison has been defended by a local politican after posting vile messages on Facebook about the murder of Michaela McAreavey.
UKIP Newry and Mourne councillor Henry Reilly says Morrison’s now infamous rants about Michaela’s murder were insensitive and shocked him when he first read about them — but he believes she’s been harshly treated for her mistake.
Last week Sunday Life revealed how Ms Morrison, from Rathfriland, posted disgusting messages saying the honeymoon murder — which had broadly united Northern Ireland in grief and sympathy for her husband and family — was a case of “karma”.
UKIP Shows ONE BAD JOKE DESERVES ANOTHER!
& The Not Very Funny Irish Comedian is backing The Not Very Honest Farage Party!
.
~~~~~~~~~~#########~~~~~~~~~~

Hi,

It seems that whilst Nigel Farage is in Finland campaigning for The Pan EU Political EFD Group and one of its least mentally sound members in a Referendum which Nigel Farage is on record as considering a complete waste of time – except we note when he can personally make money out of it (how much are The EFD paying him? It makes you wonder!).

I guess Farage has to go on a few jollies to justify all that extra cash he seems to be pocketing through the 4000 account and the like, which is for his MEPs but seems few get to see it!

Now I note that Frank Carsons is seemingly back on board – One bad Joke deserves another?

Comedian Frank Carson backing UK Independence Party

By Liam Clarke

Frank Carson

Frank Carson
Northern Ireland comic Frank Carson has pledged to fund Ukip ‘handsomely’
He’s been a legend on the comedy circuit for decades, best known for his stand-up routine of rapid-fire gags and corny catchphrases.
But now Belfast’s Frank Carson is set to turn his attentions to altogether more serious matters, pledging his support for the hardline eurosceptic United Kingdom Independence Party (Ukip) as they try to make a breakthrough in the notoriously closed shop of Northern Ireland politics.

The party is planning to field candidates in May’s council and Assembly elections.
Ukip’s leader Nigel Farage will be travelling to the province next week to open a new headquarters in Bangor and introduce several candidates.
He also claims that he will unveil a “high-profile defector” from another party.
The party’s policy in Northern Ireland includes reducing the number of MLAs at Stormont.
Speaking from his home in Blackpool, Mr Carson said he intends “knocking a few doors” for the party which he sees as providing an alternative to sectarian politics.
“People in Northern Ireland vote for their church, they don’t vote with their heads, it is ridiculous,” he said.
“I will be making a financial contribution. That is what I think they need most from me, so I will fund them handsomely.”
The entertainer has been a generous benefactor to many causes including the integrated education movement, to which he and his son Tony gave £150,000, and a hospice in Jarrow which is named after him.
A papal Knight of St Gregory in recognition of his support for Catholic church causes, he believes religion should be kept out of politics and is proud of his former membership of the Parachute Regiment. He jokes that he would support “an Orangeman for Pope”.
It is the first time the comedian has given his support to a political movement in Northern Ireland since the days of Gerry Fitt, the veteran Labour and nationalist politician who held a seat in the Lords until his death in 2005.
He described Fitt as a personal friend from the same dockland area of Belfast he grew up in.

“I’d like to cut the number of MLAs” he went on. “America has only 100 Senators for 309 million people but Stormont has 108 members for 1.7 million.”
He also believes £70m could be saved by leaving the EU and would be better spent on providing students with grants.
Ukip wants to shut the Scottish and Welsh Assemblies and send the members to Westminster where they would spend one week a month on Scottish or Welsh affairs.
Their manifesto proposes scrapping the Barnett formula which funds the other regional assemblies on the grounds that it “disadvantages English residents”.
Mr Farage added, however, that he would adopt a more cautious approach to Stormont because of the Belfast Agreement.

“We will spell out how this can happen next week but ultimately our view is that in all parts of the UK we have too many layers and too many politicians,” he said.

MAKES THE POINT FOR LEAVING On The BBC!!

~~~~~~~~~~#########~~~~~~~~~~
Hi,
here is a really good soundbite for leaving the EU:
Bob Brolley on BBC radio Coventry & Warwickshire.
Good for Ms. Sinclaire – time we redeemed our liberty, restored our democracy, reinstated our sovereignty, repatriated our governance and reintroduced justice.
Lets have a Referendum on In or Out of this malevolent, self serving, centralised undemocratic EU rip off that costs British tax payers £48 Million a DAY.
Lets save the money and start to pay off the £4.8 Trillion of debt incurred whilst in The EU – lets pay for ourselves not everyone else.
see: TheMidnightGroup.Blogspot.com
Nikki Sinclaire was in Tunisia yesterday as the only British MEP invited on the EU delegation where she was able to put the British case for democracy can not exist without Sovereignty and the people must be sovereign on an equal basis regardless of gender, ethnicity or creed.
I gather more will be available on this in the next day or two.
